Former NFL star Brown wanted for attempted murder: police

Iraqi News14-06-2025
Miami – Police in Florida have issued a warrant for the arrest of former NFL star Antonio Brown on a charge of attempted murder, authorities confirmed on Friday.
Super Bowl-winner Brown is wanted in connection with an incident at an amateur boxing event in Miami on May 16.
A copy of the warrant said 'several' witnesses saw Brown fire shots following a physical altercation with another man.
The warrant said Brown had grabbed the handgun from a security guard.
An off-duty police officer providing security for the event detained Brown before other police arrived on the scene.
No gun was found on Brown, and the other man involved in the fight with the ex-Pittsburgh Steelers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver was not immediately located.
The arrest warrant said two spent shell casings were recovered from the scene along with a discarded firearm holster.
Brown later addressed the incident in a post on X on May 17, saying he had been 'jumped by multiple individuals who tried to steal my jewelry and cause physical harm to me.'
'Police temporarily detained me until they received my side of the story and then released me,' Brown wrote. 'I went home that night and was not arrested.'
The incident is the latest in a long line of legal problems faced by Brown, who spent most of his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers before later winning a Super Bowl with Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2021.
Brown was accused of sexual assault by a former trainer in a 2019 civil suit which he later settled, and also pleaded no contest to burglary and battery in 2020 after an incident with a removal truck company outside his home.
Brown's NFL career came to an end after he famously removed his jersey and stormed off the field during a Tampa Bay game against the New York Jets in 2022.

Dozens pay tribute to Liverpool star Diogo Jota in Portugal

Gondomar – Dozens of Portuguese from the president to a childhood friend grieved for Diogo Jota in his hometown on Friday after the Liverpool star and his brother's death in a car crash. Jota, 28, and Andre Silva, 25, were killed on Thursday after their vehicle veered off a motorway in northwestern Spain and became engulfed in flames, just after the Portugal forward had got married. A wake for the siblings was organised at a chapel in the Porto suburb of Gondomar on Friday before the funeral scheduled for 10:00 am (0900 GMT) on Saturday. Close family and friends including the parents paid their respects first, with the grandfather propped up by two others to help him enter. Mourners arrived carrying wreaths of flowers, some sobbing audibly, before the wake was opened to members of the public. Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, Prime Minister Luis Montenegro, Jota's agent Jorge Mendes and Porto club president Andre Villas-Boas were among the notable attendees paying condolences. 'Football is truly in mourning. Diogo was an icon of the talent Portuguese football represents,' said football federation chief Pedro Proenca. At the Diogo Jota football academy, close to Gondomar SC where the ex-Porto and Atletico Madrid player took his first steps in the game, well-wishers created a memorial with flowers, scarves, candles and shirts. 'Thank you, Diogo Jota,' read a child's handwritten message, while mourners stood in silent contemplation. Francisco Goncalves, a 66-year-old judicial officer, was still coming to terms with what he called a 'senseless disaster… no one understands what happened'. – 'Left us too young' – Pedro Neves, who was friends with Jota at school in Gondomar, said he 'will remember him as someone who was very friendly, very courteous, who loved everyone, who always had a smile on his face'. 'He left us too young, it's not fair. But that's how life is sometimes,' Neves, 31, told AFP. At Porto's Estadio do Dragao, flags flew at half-mast and a photograph of Jota smiling and wearing the club's shirt was projected on a big screen. Liverpool have opened a book of condolences and lowered flags to half-mast, with dozens of supporters laying a sea of flowers, balloons and Jota shirts outside Anfield. A similar shrine was set up at the Molineux ground of his former Premier League club Wolverhampton Wanderers. UK media reported Liverpool had postponed the start of pre-season training, while the reigning English champions confirmed ticket sales for a July 13 friendly had been suspended. In London, Wimbledon relaxed its strict white-only dress code to allow Portuguese tennis player Francisco Cabral to wear a black ribbon in tribute to Jota.

Liverpool complete record swoop for Wirtz from Leverkusen

Liverpool – Liverpool completed the blockbuster signing of Germany forward Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen on Friday in a deal which could reportedly rise to a Premier League record fee. It was reported in England that the Premier League champions will pay an initial £100 million ($134 million) for Wirtz, comfortably surpassing their own record outlay. A further £16 million in performance-related add-ons would make it a British record deal. However, reports in Germany suggested the fee could be even higher, starting at 130 million euros (£111 million, $149 million) with add-ons taking it to 150 million euros. One of European football's elite young stars, Wirtz has been hailed as one of the 'best in the world' by former Leverkusen coach and ex-Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso, who is the new boss of Real Madrid. 'I'm really excited to have a new adventure in front of me. This was also a big point of my thoughts: that I want to have something completely new, to go out of the Bundesliga and to join the Premier League,' Wirtz told the club's website. 'In the end, we want to be successful. Last season they won the Premier League so my goal is for sure to win it again and also to go further in the Champions League. I'm really ambitious.' The 22-year-old played a crucial role in Leverkusen's greatest season as they claimed a first-ever Bundesliga title and the German Cup in 2023/24 without losing a single game under Alonso. Their only defeat that season, during which Wirtz was crowned Bundesliga player of the year, came in the Europa League final to Atalanta, denying Leverkusen a memorable treble. Bayern Munich restored their grip on the German game last season, with Leverkusen a distant second, and Wirtz is joining an exodus from the BayArena. Netherlands defender Jeremie Frimpong has already made the move from Leverkusen to Liverpool last month. After largely keeping their powder dry in the transfer market during Arne Slot's first season in charge, the Reds are splashing out to strengthen a side that romped to a record-equalling 20th English top-flight title. Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez is poised to make the move to Anfield in a £40 million deal. Liverpool have also been linked with Newcastle striker Alexander Isak and Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi. Where Wirtz's fits into Slot's plans remains to be seen. He largely played behind a central striker at Leverkusen and has operated from a wider role for Germany. A return of 57 goals and 65 assists in 197 games for Leverkusen is evidence that he carries a threat both as a creator and a goalscorer. Liverpool are already blessed with an abundance of forward options, with Mohamed Salah, Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo all offering a goal threat. However, Diogo Jota, Darwin Nunez and Federico Chiesa now face even stiffer competition to get into Slot's starting line-up, raising the prospect of Liverpool selling some of that trio to free up further transfer resources.

He appeared in the dock with co-defendant Omololu Akinlolu, a US national, with whom he is jointly charged.
