Joseph Kosinski teased there was 'still more story to tell' about Cruise's character.
Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski has teased that the sequel will be 'much bigger" than the 2022 movie. The 51-year-old filmmaker is set to return for the upcoming action blockbuster in what will be the next instalment in the story of Tom Cruise's Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell, and Kosinski has now revealed the Top Gun: Maverick follow-up will see the titular fighter pilot in a 'really existential crisis".
Speaking with GQ, the F1 director said: 'I think we've found a way to do it, not only in the scale of what we're proposing, but the idea itself of the story we're telling. We're thinking much bigger than … It's a really existential crisis that Maverick has in this, and it's much bigger than himself. It actually … I'm trying to describe it without giving anything away. It's an existential question that Maverick has to deal with, that would make Maverick feel small, I think, as a movie, compared to what we're talking about."
By the end of Top Gun: Maverick, the naval captain passes the torch to the next generation of pilots like Bradley 'Rooster' Bradshaw (Miles Teller), Jake 'Hangman' Seresin (Glen Powell) and Robert 'Bob' Floyd (Lewis Pullman), though Kosinski teased there was 'still more story to tell" about Cruise's character.
The director said: 'Yeah, there's still more story to tell for him. There's one last ride. So we're working on it now. Ehren Kruger, who wrote F1, is writing the script. Like all things, it takes a while to work things out, and we'll only do it if we feel like we've got a strong enough story."
Top Gun: Maverick – which is the legacy sequel to 1986's Top Gun and also stars Jennifer Connelly and the late Val Kilmer – follows Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell (Cruise) as he trains the next generation of TOPGUN pilots while they prepare to carry out a dangerous mission.
Producer Christopher McQuarrie recently said the plot for the Top Gun: Maverick sequel was 'already in the bag".
During an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning director said: 'It wasn't hard. I thought it would be, and that's a good place to go from is you walk into the room going, 'Come on, what are we going to do?' and Ehren Kruger pitched something, and I went, 'Mhm actually.' And we had one conversation about it and the framework is there. So, no, it's not hard to crack. The truth of the matter is, none of these are hard to crack."
While Top Gun: Maverick and its 1986 predecessor were praised for their outstanding action and impressive visuals, McQuarrie insisted 'emotion" was the key to making a successful film.
He explained: 'It's as you start to execute it, and as you start to interrogate it, as you start [to think] why these movies are made the way they are. It's not the action, it's not even the level of or intensity of or the scope and scale of the action [or] the engineering around the action, it's none of those things — it's the emotion."

The math ain't mathin' here: Melania Trump's Einstein visa

In a charged exchange during a House Judiciary Committee meeting on Wednesday, Democratic Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett took aim at First Lady Melania Trump — questioning how she qualified for an EB-1 visa, often dubbed the 'Einstein visa.' 'The first lady, a model — and when I say model, I'm not talking Tyra Banks, Cindy Crawford, or Naomi Campbell-level — applied for and was given an EB-1 visa,' Crockett said. 'Let me tell you how you receive an Einstein visa,' she continued. 'You're supposed to have some sort of significant achievement, like being awarded a Nobel Peace Prize or a Pulitzer, being an Olympic medallist, or having other sustained extraordinary abilities and success in sciences, arts, education, business, or athletics. Last time I checked, the first lady had none of those accolades under her belt. It doesn't take an Einstein to see that the math ain't mathin' here.' Melania Trump, then Melania Knauss, was a Slovenian model living in New York when she applied for the EB-1 in 2000. It was approved in 2001. She later sponsored her parents for citizenship. Nicknamed the 'Einstein visa,' the EB-1 is intended for individuals with extraordinary ability in fields such as science, arts, education, business, or athletics. US government guidance cites Nobel, Pulitzer, and Oscar winners, as well as elite athletes and executives, as examples of typical recipients. According to her lawyer, Mrs. Trump first arrived in the US in 1996 on a tourist visa, later securing a series of work visas for skilled immigrants. At the time she applied for her green card, she had worked as a runway model in Europe and featured in a limited number of UK and US magazines. Notably, she appeared on the cover of British GQ posing on a fur rug aboard Donald Trump's private jet — a shoot that came after their relationship, which began in 1998, significantly boosted her public profile.

Same drug, different packaging: Hansal Mehta, KJo review Brad Pitt's F1

Brad Pitt's new racing film 'F1' has hit theatres, and Indian filmmakers Karan Johar and Hansal Mehta have shared their reviews. While both agreed that the movie follows a familiar formula, they also praised it for being entertaining, exciting, and packed with thrilling race Johar posted a review on Instagram calling it a fun watch despite being predictable. He wrote, 'Familiar Tropes, predictable beats, one-liners you see coming a mile away and Yet. SO MUCH FUN! You can't stop yourself from reaching the edge of your seat or gasping out loud (sic).'advertisementHe added, 'Brad Pitt seems to have approached the role with a self-reflecting Zen mode movie star swag! So effective and landed every beat!' Though he found the climax a bit weak, he ended by saying, 'Mildly underwhelmed with the climatic beat BUT don't miss this adrenaline race and rush (sic).' Meanwhile, Hansal Mehta shared his thoughts on the film on X, saying, 'F1 applies every familiar screenwriting trope from the underdog sportsperson playbook: the tormented past, the fractured team, the old-vs-young dynamic, and the predictable trajectory from rock bottom to redemption.'He added, 'And yet, despite all that, it works - at least in parts. The racing sequences are thrillingly constructed. The film treats its beautifully ageing lead with near-reverence and rightly so.'My thoughts on F1F1 applies every familiar screenwriting trope from the underdog sportsperson playbook: the tormented past, the fractured team, the old-vs-young dynamic, and the predictable trajectory from rock bottom to redemption. You can almost hear the structure ticking Hansal Mehta (@mehtahansal) June 29, 2025advertisementMehta also criticised the treatment of the supporting cast, 'Take Javier Bardem - an actor capable of thunder - and reduce him to one of the laziest character sketches in recent memory. A waste really.'He summed it up by saying, 'The crowd wanted the hit and the film delivered. Same drug, different packaging but the high still lands.'Directed by 'Top Gun: Maverick' filmmaker Joseph Kosinski, 'F1' stars Brad Pitt as a retired racing legend making a comeback. Co-produced by F1 champion Lewis Hamilton, the film features Damson Idris, Kerry Condon, Javier Bardem, and more.- EndsTrending Reel
