Narmada: Police constable arrested for suspected cyber fraud, suspended
The Narmada district police arrested constable Lakshman Chaudhary, who was attached to the Rajpipla Cyber Crime Police station since its inception in January 2024, on the charges of forgery and framing an incorrect electronic document, while also initiating a probe into his involvement in possible cyber frauds.
An FIR was lodged against Chaudhary at Rajpipla police station late on Monday evening. Chaudhary, who has been suspended, is also facing a departmental probe.
Narmada District Superintendent of Police, Prashant Sumbe, told The Indian Express on Thursday, 'We had received complaints of some improper functioning of the official mail address of the cyber crime branch. Therefore, I had ordered (Additional Superintendent of Police) Lokesh Yadav to conduct an inquiry… It was revealed that Lakshman Chaudhary, a constable of the district police attached to the Cyber Crime police station as computer operator, had sent unauthorised emails to banks seeking information about some accounts…'
Sumbe added that as per the Information Technology Act, under cyber crime cases are booked and probed, the power to investigate cases and seek information from banks is vested with a police inspector. Sumbe said, 'According to the law, Chaudhary was not authorised to seek such information without permission from a police inspector…'
'We found that he has sent multiple emails to banks seeking information on freezing and unfreezing of some accounts, information on debit and credit transactions, details of account holders and other such sensitive financial details,' said Sumbe.
Sumbe said that after the matter came to the fore, the district police lodged an FIR against Chaudhary with a police sub-inspector standing in as a complainant.
'We have proactively lodged the FIR and initiated a probe as to what was the motive for seeking such information and if he was involved in any actual cyber crime… It is a misconduct to begin with and needs to be examined if he had malafide intentions. We will also reach out to individuals, who may have been victimised, if any such information is received during the course of the probe and counsel the individuals to lodge FIRs,' Sumbe said.
'He was arrested and released on bail as per the provisions of law but he has been asked to cooperate in the investigation,' Sumbe added.
Chaudhary has been booked under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Sections 201 (public servant, responsible for preparing or translating a document or electronic record, frames an incorrect document with the intent to cause injury), 336 (forgery), and 340 (using a forged document or electronic record as genuine).

A former employee of Kalyani Group company was booked for allegedly misusing its trademark logo and design of the military vehicle it manufactures for personal gains. An FIR in this case at the Mundhwa police station on July 31. As per the FIR, the accused had worked in a senior role at Bharat Forge, Kalyani Group's company, which works into defence vehicle designs and parts. In the FIR, it is alleged that the accused used the defence vehicle designs of Bharat Forge for financial gains of his company. It is also alleged in the FIR that by making minor changes in the military vehicle design of Bharat Forge, the accused published its image with the information of his company on a social networking platform. The accused was booked under sections 316 (2), 318 (3), 318 (4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and sections of the Indian Trademarks Act, 1999. Pune city police are investigating the case.

Hyderabad: Dance choreographer booked for harassing minor stepdaughter

Belagavi: Three people, including a Hindu right-wing group's leader, were arrested for allegedly poisoning the drinking water tank of a government school in Belagavi district of Karnataka to oust the school's Muslim headmaster, police said. Three people — Sagar Patil, Krishna Madar, and Magangouda Patil — were detained by the police on August 1. During interrogation, they told the cops that they had contaminated the school's drinking water supply in an effort to transfer the school's Muslim headmaster. 'Sagar Patil, the Savadatti taluk president of (Hindu right-wing group) Sri Ram Sena, wanted the Muslim headmaster to face serious charges leading to his transfer. To carry out the plan, he enlisted the help of Madar by blackmailing him over his relationship with a person from another community,' Belagavi superintendent of police (SP) Bhimashankar Guled said on Saturday. The three had allegedly purchased pesticide from a shop in Munavalli village on July 18. 'To execute the plan, the accused roped in a student related to Patil and offered him ₹500 and snacks to mix the pesticide into the school's water tank,' SP Guled said. 'To prevent the student from identifying the substance, the pesticide was transferred into a plastic soft drink bottle. After mixing it into the water inside the tank, the boy discarded the bottle nearby,' the SP said, adding that the bottle was a key piece of evidence that helped investigators uncover the crime. Police traced the shopkeeper from whom the pesticide was purchased. 'Based on the shopkeeper's account, the three accused were detained. During interrogation, they confessed to the conspiracy and were arrested,' Guled added. The accused have been booked under Section 123 (causing hurt by means of poison) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and are remanded to judicial custody. Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah on Sunday condemned the incident, describing it as a 'heinous act' rooted in communal hatred.
