Morocco to Face Mali in WAFCON Quarter-Finals

Morocco will face Mali in the quarter-finals of the 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), following the conclusion of the group stage matches today. The fixture was confirmed after Mali suffered a 4-0 defeat against South Africa in their final Group C game, allowing Morocco to secure a clash with the runners-up of that group. Led by Spanish coach Jorge Vilda, Morocco's women's national team ended their group stage campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Senegal, topping Group A with 7 points from one draw against Zambia in the opening fixture, and two wins against DR Congo and Senegal. The result demonstrated the team's ability to maintain composure under pressure while delivering solid defensive performances throughout the tournament. Mali, on the other hand, qualified with one win and one draw but struggled to contain South Africa's attacking power, which exposed tactical weaknesses on their end that Morocco may look to exploit in their upcoming match. Morocco will play Mali on July 18 at 8 p.m., with the match set to decide which team advances further in the tournament. The other fixtures are also set: Nigeria vs Zambia Jul 18 – 5 pm Algeria vs Ghana Jul 19 – 5 pm South Africa vs Senegal Jul 19 – 8 pm Morocco will now turn its attention to recovery and focused preparation, knowing that a win against Mali would bring them one step closer to their goal: lifting the continental title on home soil. Achraf Hakimi emerges as strong Ballon d'Or contender after stellar season

As the 2024–2025 season wraps up, Achraf Hakimi stands out as one of the most credible contenders for the Ballon d'Or. In a survey conducted by Le Parisien among twelve international journalists, the Moroccan full-back appears in several top-five lists, reinforcing his status as one of the world's best players this season. A key figure for Paris Saint-Germain, Hakimi has delivered consistently strong performances across all competitions: Ligue 1, the Champions League, and the Club World Cup. His influence on PSG's style of play is widely recognized, well beyond France. While Ousmane Dembélé tops the overall ranking compiled by Le Parisien, ahead of Lamine Yamal (FC Barcelona) and Vitinha (PSG), Hakimi is frequently ranked third or fourth, ahead of stars like Mohamed Salah and Kylian Mbappé. «I hear that Ousmane Dembélé is receiving a lot of praise, but I truly believe the best players in this PSG side, and among the top three in world football over the past 12 months, are those in less glamorous roles: two exceptional full-backs, Achraf Hakimi and Nuno Mendes, and a playmaker, Vitinha. They've been brilliant», said British journalist Oliver Kay (The Athletic), underscoring the international acclaim for the Atlas Lion. Dembélé, meanwhile, also left his mark on the season with several decisive performances. «This is the best version of Ousmane», said Ahmed Adala (Radio Mosaïque FM, Tunisia), hailing the forward's new-found maturity. Dominique Sévérac (Le Parisien) described Dembélé's role in PSG's pressing game as «self-evident». Spanish-Moroccan prodigy Lamine Yamal of FC Barcelona also captured global attention. At just 17, he dazzled in the Champions League. «His game is mesmerizing», wrote Bruno Alemany (Cadena SER, Spain), calling his style an inspiration worthy of the game's greats. Le Parisien's ranking system assigns points based on placement (15 for first, 12 for second, and so on). While Ousmane Dembélé currently leads the tally, Achraf Hakimi is emerging as a serious and deserving challenger—bolstered by an exceptional season with both PSG and the Moroccan national team.
