"I'm not going into whether we are right or wrong. I am not going to debate it. Do you have the guts to tell BJP that you will not be a part of their alliance if they do not cancel NEET in Tamil Nadu?" Stalin asked Palaniswami during the debate for grants for the health department.
Earlier, when members were arguing about the number of medical colleges established during the previous 10-year AIADMK regime, Palaniswami said the state cannot use lack of permission from the centre as "an excuse" for not starting new medical colleges in the last four years.
Transport minister S S Shivashankar accused AIADMK of clinching a deal with the BJP-led govt to start new medical colleges. "The eleven medical colleges were established in the state during the AIADMK regime as a quid pro quo for allowing NEET in TN," he said.
Palaniswami retorted, saying that NEET was first conceived in 2010 when DMK was a part of the Congress-led UPA govt. A Congress leader's wife argued in favour of NEET in the court, he said. Stalin, who was listening to the debate, wanted to know if the party would push for cancellation of NEET.
When Palaniswami responded, saying decisions on NEET can be taken only by the Supreme Court, Shivashankar wanted to know why AIADMK members held candle marches against NEET.
Palaniswami then accused DMK of cheating people by promising they would get an exemption from NEET if they assumed office. In response, Stalin said DMK would have succeeded if their alliance had won the Lok Sabha polls. He asked Palaniswami why they decided to align with BJP after saying they would have no alliance with the national party. Palaniswami said the DMK allied with Congress despite the anti-Hindi agitation, Emergency, and MISA (Maintenance of Internal Security Act) imposition. MSID:: 120487448 413 |

Trump's "Big, Beautiful Bill" Awaits Final Vote: How It Will Impact Indians

Washington: US President Donald Trump's signature tax-and-spending legislation-- " One Big, Beautiful Bill"-- is lined up for final vote over the coming hours in the House of Representatives, the lower chamber of the American Congress. The mega bill, which could define Trump's second term in the White House, has faced an uneasy passage so far. Several members of Trump's own Republican Party have sided with opposition Democrats to criticise the bill for a number of reasons, including the impact on US national debt and healthcare. Trump's sprawling legislation-- which is expected to slash social welfare programs and add an eye-watering $3 trillion to the national debt--was originally approved by the House in May. But it returned to the lower chamber for a rubber stamp after squeezing through the Senate on Tuesday by a solitary vote following several revisions. How The New Version Of The Bill Benefits India Among the revisions in the proposed legislation was a significant dilution of the provision on tax remittances to other countries, including India. In a massive relief for thousands of non-resident Indians (NRIs) and Indian professionals working in the US, who send money back home, the updated draft of the bill released on June 27 showed that the tax rate on remittances was slashed to 1 per cent, down from the 5 per cent proposed originally. The tax rate was brought down to 3.5 per cent in the House version of the bill earlier. The rule will apply to all US residents who aren't US citizens-including Green Card holders, people on temporary visas such as H-1B or H-2A and foreign students. The reduction in tax on all international money transfers will benefit nearly 45 lakh Indians living in the US, including nearly 32 lakh persons of Indian Origin. It will apply to all remittances made via cash, money orders, or cashier's checks. "There is hereby imposed on any remittance transfer a tax equal to 1 per cent of the amount of such tax imposed by this section with respect to any remittance transfer shall be paid by the sender with respect to such transfer," the updated draft of the bill states. The new draft also said that the bill will exempt remittances made from "an account held in or by a financial institution" and those "funded with a debit card or a credit card issued in the United States".

CM Fadnavis Should Apologise: MVA After SIT Clears Aaditya Thackeray In Disha Salian Case

New Delhi: Leaders of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) on Wednesday strongly criticised the ruling Mahayuti alliance and called for an apology from Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis following a Special Investigation Team's (SIT) submission to the Bombay High Court stating there was no foul play in the death of Disha Salian, the former manager of late actor Sushant Singh Rajput. Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of maligning Aaditya Thackeray with baseless allegations linking him to Salian's death. Speaking to ANI, Raut said, 'Devendra Fadnavis must apologise. If the police have concluded it was a suicide, BJP leaders and even Eknath Shinde should apologise for defaming Aaditya Thackeray.' #WATCH | Mumbai, Maharashtra | On Mumbai Police SIT's report to Bombay High Court ruling out 'foul play' in Disha Salian death case, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut says, "Now, Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis should apologise (to Aaditya Thackeray). Narayan Rane's son Nitish… — ANI (@ANI) July 3, 2025 Senior NCP leader Eknath Khadse echoed Raut's condemnation, accusing the BJP of exploiting the case for political gains. 'They levelled baseless allegations against Aaditya Thackeray and played dirty politics over the death of a woman,' Khadse told ANI. Earlier, Mumbai Police told ANI, "So far, the findings of the SIT pertaining to the circumstances that caused deceased Disha Salian's death are coherent with the findings of the earlier investigation officer of the said case. However, further investigation is still being carried out by the SIT." Disha Salian died on June 8, 2020, after falling from the 14th floor of a residential building in Mumbai's Malad area. Her death had sparked widespread conspiracy theories and political disputes within Maharashtra. Salian's father, Satish Salian, has repeatedly claimed that his daughter was gangraped and murdered. However, the Mumbai Police's affidavit submitted to the Bombay High Court rejected these claims, stating there was no evidence of sexual or physical assault. The police affidavit, filed by Senior Inspector Shailendra Nagarkar of Malvani Police Station, indicated that Salian died by suicide, jumping from her apartment window of her own volition. It cited that she was under 'tremendous mental stress' due to family disputes and failed business ventures, and was inebriated at the time of her death. Her fiancé, who was present on the night of the incident, also ruled out any foul play. In March, Satish Salian approached the Bombay High Court seeking a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe and a First Information Report (FIR) against Aaditya Thackeray. Subsequently, BJP MLA Nitesh Rane demanded Thackeray's resignation and criminal action against him. Aaditya Thackeray has challenged the petition, terming it 'false, frivolous, and motivated' and has sought a hearing before any orders are passed. The Bombay High Court is yet to decide on Satish Salian's plea for a CBI investigation.

‘No alliance with Congress, INDIA bloc was only for LS polls': Kejriwal after Gujarat bypoll win

AHMEDABAD: Aam Aadmi Party's national convener Arvind Kejriwal said on Thursday that his party no longer has an alliance with the Congress, accusing it of helping the ruling BJP in Gujarat. The Congress-led INDIA (Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance) grouping of opposition parties was meant only for the Lok Sabha elections last year, he said. Addressing a press conference here, the former Delhi chief minister said his party will fight the 2027 Gujarat assembly elections and emerge victorious as people of the state now have an option other than the BJP and Congress. 'We have no alliance with Congress. If there was any alliance, why did they contest the bypoll in Visavadar? They came to defeat us. The BJP had sent the Congress to defeat AAP by cutting our votes. 'When Congress failed, the BJP even reprimanded them. The INDIA bloc was only for the Lok Sabha polls. Now there is no alliance from our side,' said Kejriwal. AAP leader Gopal Italia won the bypoll to the Visavadar seat in Junagadh district last month by defeating BJP's Kirit Patel by a margin of over 17,000 votes. Congress nominee Nitin Ranpariya stood in the third spot with 5,501 votes.
