Kaizer Chiefs news: Chiefs plan coaching boost, eye ex-player return

Kaizer Chiefs have started making big moves ahead of the 2025/26 PSL season. The club is reportedly close to finalizing the return of former head coach Dillon Sheppard to their senior technical staff. This plan would see Sheppard take on a hybrid coaching role, splitting his time between the first team and the Development and Discovery Centre (DDC).
An insider revealed, 'Sheppard has always been a passionate part of Chiefs. His return will bring stability and fresh ideas both on the training ground and at the academy.' The arrangement would allow Sheppard to support local players — both young and experienced — while also continuing his work with the DDC, especially since current coach Vela Khumalo will be involved with the Under-17 national team preparing for the FIFA Under-17 World Cup in September. This dual role could be critical in shaping Chiefs' future talent pipeline.
In addition to the coaching changes, Chiefs have also shown interest in bringing back midfielder Lebohang Lesako. 'Scouts and recruiters have been following his progress closely. They know him well, and are happy with his growth both as a player and as a person,' the insider added. Lesako's potential return to Naturena is seen as a move to add experience and creativity to the squad, bolstering depth in midfield.
Chiefs have already signed six new players this transfer window, but with at least five more players heading out, the club is clearly intent on reshaping the squad. These off-field moves could prove crucial as the team looks to challenge strongly next season.

Kaizer Chiefs: Amakhosi to get striker for free?

Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs have the option of signing former TS Galaxy striker Dzenan Zajmovic, who is now a free agent. The 30-year-old Bosnian forward scored eight goals in 25 matches for the Rockets last season. He was rumoured with a move to North Africa but the striker affirmed his love for South Africa. Speaking to KickOff , Zajmovic revealed that two PSL teams have contacted him recently but did not disclose the names. Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates could be some of the teams which spoke to the striker. 'Two clubs have already contacted from the PSL. South Africa is a nice country with a good league, and I would love to continue playing there at a new club,' Zajmovic told KickOff . 'I felt at home and will never shut a door for anything to do with South Africa, and my wife and kids know about it. It was an amazing experience being in South Africa. Will he be complemented by Sirino and Cele?: Ex-Kaizer Chiefs coach on new signing

Former Kaizer Chiefs assistant coach Farouk Khan feels Amakhosi got it right by signing Siphesihle Ndlovu. The Soweto giants signed the talented midfielder for R5 million from SuperSport United, days before the club was sold. The 28-year-old, who was born in Pietermaritzburg, is now with his new teammates in the Netherlands for pre-season training. Khan, who worked as an assistant coach at Kaizer Chiefs in the early 2000s, warned that Ndlovu could face challenges during the season given how established other midfielders are in the team. 'Well, he's technically not bad, and when getting forward, his passing range is good. On the odd occasion, he can score a goal or two as well,' Khan told SoccerBeat . 'However, the challenge he will face is how he will be complemented by the other players, such as Gaston Sirino and Thabo Cele. Will they be able to achieve this in the shortest period of time? As you know, when you are constantly building teams from season to season, you will never have a situation where the team is stable enough. 'I think all great teams, firstly, have a very good leader in the midfield. I don't know his leadership qualities, and I haven't seen much of it because, at Orlando Pirates, he wasn't the leader. There were players much bigger than him,' Khan added. 'At SuperSport, he made his mark under Gavin Hunt. But again, I don't think he was the leader in that midfield. However, in saying that, it's just about the chemistry between the rest of the midfield and, obviously, the attackers and defenders that will guarantee that he has a successful season,' said the former Kaizer Chiefs coach.
