Drew Goddard's THE MATRIX Movie Rumored to Bring Back Keanu Reeves as Neo — GeekTyrant
Now, a new rumor hints that a very familiar face may be returning to the digital frontier. According to scooper Daniel Richtman: 'The idea is to have Keanu Reeves back for the next Matrix movie.'

For longtime fans, this is a potentially big development. While there had once been chatter about a full-on reboot starring Michael B. Jordan, the idea of picking up with Reeves' Neo instead feels more in line with what audiences might actually want.
The Matrix franchise is so deeply tied to its original cast and philosophical lore, this movie might benefit more from evolution than reinvention.
When we last saw Neo in The Matrix Resurrections , he and Trinity had regained control of the simulation and were shaping it together. If Goddard's film picks up from there, Neo could now exist as something closer to a god within the system, something new for the character and the mythology.
Goddard has made it clear that he's not taking this opportunity lightly.. He said: 'It is not hyperbole to say The Matrix films changed both cinema and my life. Lana and Lilly's exquisite artistry inspires me on a daily basis, and I am beyond grateful for the chance to tell stories in their world.'
Jesse Ehrman, Warner Bros. Motion Pictures President of Production, added: 'Drew came to Warner Bros. with a new idea that we all believe would be an incredible way to continue the Matrix world, by both honoring what Lana and Lilly began over 25 years ago and offering a unique perspective based on his own love of the series and characters.'
Ehrman also made clear the studio's support: 'The entire team at Warner Bros. Discovery is thrilled for Drew to be making this new Matrix film, adding his vision to the cinematic canon the Wachowskis' spent a quarter of a century building here at the studio.'
Whether this is a soft reboot, a sequel, or something that defies categorization altogether, it's clear that Goddard wants to build on the legacy rather than overwrite it, and if Reeves is truly coming back, then we're not done with Neo just yet.

Avatar director James Cameron wants to make an animated anthology series that fills in some of the gaps between the franchise's movies, and he's already pitched it to Disney. "I said, 'Look, I want to do an animated anthology series that's essentially in the world, but stories that you wouldn't have expected from that world'", Cameron told Empire. "There might even be an animated feature in there – it might be a feature for streaming, or a theatrical feature." He continued, "A good early example is The Animatrix, where they went afield in the Matrix world. These are all great examples for how we can add texture and baroque detail to the world of Avatar." The first Avatar movie was released in 2009 and a sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, followed in 2022. The series is set on the fictional moon of Pandora, inhabited by the Na'vi, which is being mined for a valuable mineral by human colonizers in order to fuel a dying planet Earth. Sam Worthington stars as Jake Sully, a human who chooses to permanently stay in his Na'vi avatar after falling in love with the Na'vi princess Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña), and the pair are raising a family in The Way of Water. Cameron said the animated stories could deliver "backstory on characters and tangential stuff that happened off-camera within the movies. Who first landed on Pandora? The first expedition. You could go anywhere you want." "We haven't done much with that yet," he added. "We're still gathering our stories and that sort of thing, and I've got to find the boutique filmmakers, the animators, that want to do it." Avatar 3, officially titled Avatar: Fire and Ash, is on the way, which sees Jake and Neytiri face new obstacles after settling with the coastal-dwelling Metkayina clan: the Ash People, an aggressive Na'vi tribe led by Varang (Oona Chaplin) – and allied with Colonel Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang). The world of Avatar might be expanding once again but this time in animated form. James Cameron, the mastermind behind Avatar and Avatar: The Way of Water , is eyeing a whole new medium to explore Pandora's rich mythology. While some fans are counting down the days until Avatar: Fire and Ash hits theaters this December, Cameron is already planting seeds for a potential animated anthology series that could dive deeper into the untold stories of his sci-fi universe. Speaking with Empire Magazine, Cameron revealed he's been talking with Disney about launching an Avatar animated project. Of course, this idea is still in early development and hasn't moved past the brainstorming phase. 'We haven't done much with that yet. So while there's no official greenlight yet, just knowing Cameron is serious about bringing more Avatar stories to life in animation is pretty cool an interesting. The franchise has already proven it has the depth and scale to support spin-offs and side stories, and animation could be the perfect playground for creative experimentation in the Avatar universe. In the meantime, fans can gear up for Avatar: Fire and Ash , which premieres in theaters on December 19, 2025.
