James Cameron Wants to Expand the World of AVATAR with an Animated Anthology Project — GeekTyrant

Geek Tyrant3 days ago
The world of Avatar might be expanding once again but this time in animated form. James Cameron, the mastermind behind Avatar and Avatar: The Way of Water , is eyeing a whole new medium to explore Pandora's rich mythology.
While some fans are counting down the days until Avatar: Fire and Ash hits theaters this December, Cameron is already planting seeds for a potential animated anthology series that could dive deeper into the untold stories of his sci-fi universe.
Speaking with Empire Magazine, Cameron revealed he's been talking with Disney about launching an Avatar animated project. He shared his vision saying:
'I said, 'Look, I want to do an animated anthology series that's essentially in the world, but stories that you wouldn't have expected from that world.' There might even be an animated feature in there – it might be a feature for streaming, or a theatrical feature.
'A good early example is The Animatrix, where they went afield in the Matrix world. These are all great examples for how we can add texture and baroque detail to the world of Avatar.'
What Cameron's talking about sounds incredibly cool. He's not just thinking about rehashing the same characters or events. He wants to go wide with it. Deep cuts. Backstories. Side quests. The kind of lore expansions that fans eat up.
'Backstory on characters and tangential stuff that happened off-camera within the movies. Who first landed on Pandora? The first expedition. You could go anywhere you want.'
Of course, this idea is still in early development and hasn't moved past the brainstorming phase.
'We haven't done much with that yet. We're still gathering our stories and that sort of thing, and I've got to find the boutique filmmakers, the animators, that want to do it.'
So while there's no official greenlight yet, just knowing Cameron is serious about bringing more Avatar stories to life in animation is pretty cool an interesting. The franchise has already proven it has the depth and scale to support spin-offs and side stories, and animation could be the perfect playground for creative experimentation in the Avatar universe.
In the meantime, fans can gear up for Avatar: Fire and Ash , which premieres in theaters on December 19, 2025. The film sees Sam Worthington return as Jake Sully, alongside Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Giovanni Ribisi, Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Joel David Moore, Edi Falco, and more.

Jamie Lee Curtis Had 1 Major Condition for Filming ‘Freakier Friday'

Jamie Lee Curtis had one major condition before agreeing to star in the Freaky Friday sequel, Freakier Friday. In an interview with the Associated Press, the actress said the film was a 'love letter to Los Angeles' following the Palisades wildfires that ravaged Southern California in early 2025, and that she refused to film it in a less expensive location as many movie and TV productions do. 'The original movie was, and I knew that the sequel had to be filmed in Los Angeles,' Curtis, 66, said. 'I told Disney I would not shoot it in Atlanta. I would not shoot it in Vancouver. If they didn't get the tax credit, I wasn't going to make the movie.' Curtis explained that the house used for Lindsay Lohan's character Anna Coleman's home in the 2003 Freaky Friday remake of the 1976 classic that starred Jodie Foster and Barbara Harris, 'burnt to the ground' in the Palisades fires. 'So, I feel—made me cry—I feel particularly proud that I really lobbied and took a stand that we had to shoot it here and that we were able to shoot it in these beautiful places,' she explained. 'And that we will now forever, because of movies, see what the Pacific Palisades looked like before this horrific fire.' Lohan agreed that the sequel film was a homage to the city. In a May interview with Elle, Lohan said, 'The film is such an homage to California after the fires, because we shot a lot in the Palisades and in Malibu. Even the house — the original Freaky Friday house — unfortunately, is gone. So I think it'll be a really nice love letter.' Lohan noted that the local filming location was also a nice perk for the crew members, who were able to 'go back home to their families' each night. Freakier Friday hits theaters on Aug. Lindsay Lohan channels 'Freaky Friday,' 'Parent Trap' roles with press tour looks: Photos

"Freakier Friday" star Lindsay Lohan isn't just serving up nostalgia on the silver screen. The Critics' Choice-nominated actress and former child star, whose starring roles in "The Parent Trap," "Freaky Friday" and "Mean Girls" have made her synonymous with millennial pop culture, revisited some of her most iconic characters on the press tour for "Freakier Friday," a sequel to the 2003 body-switching comedy starring Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis. While attending the film's U.K. premiere in London on Thursday, July 31, Lohan sparkled in a sequined, lavender halter gown by Ludovic de Saint Sernin that mirrored the dress worn by "Freaky Friday" protagonist Anna Coleman in the film's closing scenes. She completed the look with a campy, guitar-shaped purse that paid homage to her character's musician background. "London, You're the Ultimate!" wrote Lohan on Instagram alongside a photo of the nostalgic look, also referencing the soundtrack theme song "Ultimate." Aside from her fashion tributes, Lohan has also been reconnecting with her movie-making family amid the press tour. During the "Freakier Friday" Los Angeles premiere on July 22, Lohan posed for photos with Lisa Ann Walter and Elaine Hendrix, who starred with Lohan in her film debut "The Parent Trap." "Freakier Friday" follows the mother-daughter duo of Tess (Curtis) and Anna Coleman as they endure another comical body switch with Anna's daughter Harper (Julia Butters) and soon-to-be stepdaughter Lily Davies (Sophia Hammons). Ahead of the Disney flick's Aug. 8 release, check out Lohan's most nostalgic looks. Anthony Anderson speaks out on backlash over resurfaced Lindsay Lohan interview Lindsay Lohan goes rocker chic with Pink Slip tribute In "Freaky Friday," Lohan's character Anna serves as the guitarist for Pink Slip, an all-female rock band Anna forms with schoolmates Maddie (Christina Vidal) and Peg (Haley Hudson). During a July 28 outing in New York City's Madison Square Park, Lohan was spotted wearing a Pink Slip graphic T-shirt, which she paired with a black leather miniskirt and dark sunglasses. "💖✨ Pink Slip energy in full effect," wrote Lohan in a July 26 Instagram post, in which she could be seen wearing the same band tee with a baby pink cardigan. Lindsay Lohan recreates 'Freaky Friday' finale look One of the most memorable scenes from "Freaky Friday" is when Anna — who had been struggling to accept Tess' fiancé Ryan (Mark Harmon) — performs a musical number for her mother and new stepfather at their nuptials after switching back places. Guitarist Anna, donning a lavender wrap dress, takes center stage for the performance, singing the sweet pop-rock banger "Ultimate" in dedication to the newlywed couple. Lohan's U.K. premiere version of the look elevated the wedding frock with its elegant, sequined beading and silver halter collar. Lindsay Lohan is a preppy princess with 'Parent Trap' homage Lohan, who starred as identical twins Annie James and Hallie Parker in 1998's "The Parent Trap," paid tribute to British twin Annie with a preppy ensemble while in New York City on July 28. The actress looked posh in a yellow plaid, tweed dress by Balmain, which she paired with canary Jimmy Choo heels and a black Hermès bag. The outfit struck an undeniable resemblance to the look Annie wears while departing summer camp. "Annie James energy with a Freakier Friday Twist 💛," Lohan wrote on Instagram. 'Freakier Friday' trailer: Lindsay Lohan, Jamie Lee Curtis get 'Freakier' in 'Freaky Friday' sequel Lindsay Lohan serves up double dose of 'Parent Trap' nostalgia In true twinning fashion, Lohan served up another "Parent Trap" homage during a July 28 appearance on "Live with Kelly and Mark." The actress wore a multicolored, short-sleeved dress by Roberto Cavalli that resembled the floral number that Hallie wears as she and sister Annie attempt to reunite their divorced parents with a romantic dinner. "A little shine, a little silk, a lot of love and some inspo from Hallie Parker 😉💚💜," Lohan wrote on Instagram. Lindsay Lohan pays tribute to 'Sex and the City' glam with Carrie Bradshaw-inspired look Lohan may not have hung around with Carrie Bradshaw in the late '90s, but the ladies are birds of a feather in the fashion department. The "Freakier Friday" star took a page from Bradshaw's style book at the film's New York City premiere on July 28. Lohan donned a white Jacquemus dress featuring a poofy tulle skirt, a whimsical ensemble reminiscent of "Sex and the City" star Sarah Jessica Parker's iconic tutu dress in the show's opening sequence. "Freakier Friday feels with a little family love and a nod to Carrie Bradshaw 🗽✨," Lohan wrote on Instagram.

l Love The Parent Trap Reunion In Freakier Friday, So Of Course I Had To Ask Lindsay Lohan How It Came Together

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Spoilers ahead for Freakier Friday. The Freakier Friday release of course has Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis reuniting on the big screen as mother and daughter over 20 years later for another hilarious body swap comedy. But, did you know that within the movie Lohan also gets to work with one of her The Parent Trap co-stars? When the latest trailer for the sequel dropped last month, eagle-eyed fans noticed Elaine Hendrix briefly makes an appearance, and I had know how they made it happen. I Asked Lindsay Lohan How Freakier Friday's Parent Trap Reunion Came Together Elaine Hendrix played the twins' stepmother-to-be, Meredith Blake, in Lohan's first movie in 1998. The camping trip scene where Hallie and Annie raise hell on Meredith lives rent free in the heads of many Disney kids, so how lovely is it that Freakier Friday has a little nod to another one of Lohan's movies? Here's what Lohan told me about how Hendrix was cast in the movie: [Director] Nisha Ganatra is friends with her. I'm still friends with Elaine. But, it was kind of just on a whim we were like, 'Should Elaine do this?' And we're like, yes. Why not? And, it was a great day. We had so much fun. I love Elaine. It just kind of came about randomly. Lindsay Lohan was twelve years old when she played dual roles of Annie and Hallie (which was honestly Oscar-worthy given I and many people thought Lohan really was a twin when it came out). As the actress shared during our interview, the Freakier Friday director is friends with Hendrix, and the decision was made sort of on a 'whim'. When I asked Lohan if she's stayed in contact with Hendrix over the years, she said this: So we just actually were talking yesterday, so it's funny that you brought her up. A friend of hers is doing a production of something having to do with the Parent Trap in New York they're doing… I love Elaine. Lohan is talking about an off-Broadway The Parent Trap musical parody called Ginger Twinsies that is currently playing at the Orpheum Theatre from director Kevin Zak. Per an Instagram post from last month, Elaine Hendrix actually joined the producing team of the show. Go ad-free and pay $15.99 a month or save 16% and pre-pay $159.99 for a Deal Where To Look For Elaine Hendrix In Freakier Friday I'm absolutely obsessed with the fact that Lindsay Lohan and Elaine Hendrix still keep in touch, and talk about The Parent Trap-related things, but I bet you're wondering where to find the reunion in Freakier Friday, right? I've seen the movie, and while I won't give the details away, I can direct you to a scene that has a lot of fashion in it as teased in the trailers. You won't miss her! Along with Hendrix showing up in Freakier Friday, she was also seen at the premiere with Lohan and another The Parent Trap co-star, Lisa Ann Walter. Check them out: All this Lindsay Lohan nostalgia just makes my heart happy! You can see Freakier Friday when it hits theaters on August 8.
