First time Maha CM placed Hindi above Marathi: Supriya Sule on language row

Amid the ongoing Hindi-Marathi language row, NCP-SCP MP Supriya Sule took a jibe at Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, questioning who might be pressuring him to prioritise Hindi over Marathi.
Speaking with the reporters on Saturday, Supriya Sule said, "I am very concerned about Devendra (Fadnavis) Ji. Who is pressuring him?... Under whose pressure is he doing this? This is the first time that Maharashtra's Chief Minister is placing Hindi above Marathi..."
Meanwhile, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray hit back at BJP MP Nishikant Dubey's controversial "patak-patak ke maarenge" remarks.
In a counter-attack, Raj Thackeray said, "A BJP MP said, 'Marathi logon ko hum yahan pe patak patak ke maarenge'... You come to Mumbai. Mumbai ke samundar mein dubo dubo ke maarenge."
Reacting to Dubey's remarks, the MNS chief asserted that he will not compromise on matters related to the Marathi language and the people of Maharashtra. He further said that those who live in Maharashtra should "learn Marathi as soon as possible."
"I will not make any compromises over Marathi and the people of Maharashtra. Those who live in Maharashtra, to them I would like to say, 'learn Marathi as soon as possible, wherever you go, speak Marathi'. In Karnataka, they fight for their language. Even a rickshaw puller knows that the Government is standing behind him over language. Similarly, you are like a pillar and speak in Marathi only. This is what I have come to request all of you," Thackeray said while addressing a gathering in Mumbai.
Taking a dig at the Maharashtra leadership over the language policy, Thackeray said, "Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis had said that they would make Hindi language compulsory (in schools)... Maharashtra CM is fighting for Hindi. Marathi should be made mandatory in all schools. But instead, you are speaking about making Hindi mandatory."
The Maharashtra Government had revoked the government resolutions (GRs) on the three-language policy, introducing Hindi as the third language in primary schools. The government has decided to set up a committee to take a relook into the three-language policy.
Fadnavis announced that the government resolutions (GRs) issued in April regarding the three-language policy in primary schools have been cancelled. The first GR had made Hindi a compulsory third language for students from Classes 1 to 5, and the second GR made it optional.

DU releases cut-off scores for all course-college combinations for first time since 2021

In a step toward restoring transparency in undergraduate admissions, Delhi University (DU) on Sunday publicly released detailed cut-off scores for all of its 1,528 course-college combinations — the first such disclosure since 2021. The 89-page document has been published on the varsity's website. The data, based on scores from the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) 2025, spans a vast range: from a peak of 950 out of 1,000 for coveted courses at top-tier colleges to a low of 65 for lesser-demanded programmes. The highest cut-offs were seen at DU's most sought-after colleges. Hindu College set the bar with a score of 950 for its BA (Honours) in Political Science, followed by 936 for its BA programme in History and Political Science. St Stephen's College, Miranda House, Lady Shri Ram College for Women, and Shri Ram College of Commerce also featured among those with the top cut-offs. At the other end of the spectrum were language programmes, where demand has historically been lower. The BA (Honours) Hindi course at Mata Sundari College for Women recorded a cut-off of just 65, while Zakir Hussain Delhi College's Urdu Honours course closed at 111. For the past three years, applicants could only view cut-offs relevant to their chosen preferences via the university's Common Seat Allocation System (CSAS) dashboard. The broader picture — crucial for gauging competitiveness across courses and institutions – remained unclear. This year, DU received 2.39 lakh completed applications in the second phase of its admissions cycle, competing for 71,642 seats across 79 undergraduate programmes in 69 colleges and departments. On Saturday, the university announced that it had made 93,166 seat allocations. Delhi continued to dominate the applicant pool with 77,900 candidates, followed by Uttar Pradesh (54,278), Haryana (24,206), and Bihar (17,173). These four states together accounted for nearly 72 per cent of all applications. By contrast, interest from the country's peripheral regions remained limited — with just 48 applicants from Goa, 61 from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and 65 from Mizoram. Students have until July 21 to accept their allotted seats, after which colleges will have a day to approve applications. The deadline for fee payment is July 23.

Parliament Monsoon Session Day 1: Lok Sabha adjourned twice amid Oppn protests

Lok Sabha witnessed noisy protests from the Opposition over various issues and a demand for discussion on Operation Sindoor, leading to at least two adjournments of the House Monday, the first day of the Monsoon Session. This came despite an appeal from Speaker Om Birla to bust the perception that disruptions happen in the House on the first day of any Parliament session, and assurances from the government that it was ready to discuss and reply to all issues. As the House met on the first day of the Monsoon session, members paid tribute to eight former MPs who passed away recently. The House also paid tributes to those who were killed in the terror attack at Pahalgam on April 22, and those killed in a plane crash in Ahmedabad on June 12. Speaker Om Birla also congratulated Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) and Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla on his successful space mission, and said the House would also have a detailed discussion on the space mission during the session. When Birla called for the Question Hour, Opposition members stood up, and shouted slogans demanding discussion on various issues. 'This is Question Hour, and it's my request that we should try to maintain high parliamentary standards, and we should bust this myth that disruptions happen in the House on the first day of the House. Our efforts should be to express the hopes and expectations of the people of the country,' the Speaker said. The Speaker assured the Opposition that sufficient time would be allocated to all members for discussion. As the Opposition members continued sloganeering, the Speaker said, 'You want discussion on Operation Sindoor… Discussion will happen after Question Hour.' Birla said that the government would address every issue, and that sloganeering inside the House was inappropriate. 'Go outside the House for sloganeering,' he said. The Lok Sabha Speaker also said the government is ready to reply to all issues. But when the Opposition members continued to shout slogans despite assurances, the Speaker adjourned the House till noon. The Opposition members continued their protest when House proceedings resumed. Amidst the sloganeering, BJP leader Baijayant Panda presented the report (in both Hindi and English) of the Select Committee on the Income Tax Bill, 2025. Panda also tabled a copy of the record of evidence given before the Select Committee on the Income-Tax Bill, 2025. Amid the disruptions, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju intervened and asked if there would be a ruckus in the House, then how the discussion would happen. Rijiju said the ruckus, and sloganeering were not appropriate. 'The government is ready for discussion,' Rijiju said. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, too, assured members that the government was ready for discussion on every matter. While addressing the Lok Sabha as the Chair, Jagdambika Pal adjourned the House till 2 pm. Lalmani is an Assistant Editor with The Indian Express, and is based in New Delhi. Ajit Pawar condemns violence after NCP workers thrash Chhava Sanghatna activists over Manikrao Kokate video

A day after workers of the ruling Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) beat up activists of Chhava Sanghatna, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and NCP president Ajit Pawar on Monday condemned the incident. The Chhava Sanghatna, which primarily represents Maratha youth, often raises issues related to farmers and agriculture. 'The incident that took place yesterday in Latur between office-bearers of the NCP and the Chhava Sanghatna is very serious, unfortunate, and condemnable. I strongly oppose any kind of violence, rude behaviour or unparliamentary language. We sincerely respect the just demands and feelings of every section of the society,' Ajit Pawar said. He added that the NCP's identity is based on the ideas of democracy, equality and fraternity of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Shahu Maharaj, Mahatma Phule and Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar. 'I would like to clearly state to all my colleagues and activists: always prioritise the values of democracy, peace, and non-violence while working in social life,' he said. On Sunday, NCP state youth president Suraj Chavan and other local office-bearers of the party assaulted Vijaykumar Ghadge and others of the Chhava Sanghatna at the government guest house in Latur. Ghadge and others had earlier submitted a letter of protest to NCP state president Sunil Tatkare against party leader and Agriculture Minister Manikrao Kokate after a video allegedly showed Kokate playing the card game Rummy inside the Legislative Council. The workers also gifted a pack of cards to Tatkare as a mark of protest. Later, alleging that Ghadge and others used unparliamentary language against NCP leaders, Chavan and other workers thrashed them in front of cameras and the police. On Monday morning, Chavan released a video statement apologising for his behaviour. 'We did not beat him for raising farmers' issues but for using unparliamentary language against our leaders. I apologise for the actions and I will personally meet Vijay Ghadge and clear the misunderstanding,' he said. Meanwhile, Chavan has been asked not to attend Tatkare's programmes in neighbouring Dharashiv district on Monday, anticipating a strong reaction from Chhava Sanghatna and other organisations.
