ZF's Modular EV Range‑Extender Set to Launch in 2026
Unlike a conventional plug-in hybrid, ZF's range-extenders never use the engine to drive the wheels. Instead, the gas engine powers a generator, which in turn charges the battery or powers an electric motor. The base eRE drives the rear wheels, while the eRE+ adds a planetary gearset, differential, and clutch to support front-wheel assist - or full four-wheel drive.The result is a modular, software-defined drivetrain that works with either 400V or 800V vehicle architectures. The eRE produces between 94 and 148 horsepower, while the eRE+ scales to 201 hp. Carmakers supply their own engines and batteries - ZF handles the rest.It's a concept that echoes similar efforts across the industry. ZF's own range-extender push has been framed as a way to extend EV range without resorting to larger, heavier batteries - a particularly useful idea in midsize crossovers, pickups, and vans where space and weight are major concerns.
ZF isn't alone in this line of thinking. Volkswagen recently revised its future EV platform - the Scalable Systems Platform (SSP) - to accommodate optional range extenders. While SSP was originally designed as a pure BEV solution, the company now views a generator-equipped fallback as a pragmatic "safety net" against softening EV demand. The SSP will remain electric-first, but the range-extender update shows just how much the industry's tone has shifted.Likewise, Scout Motors - the VW Group-owned electric off-road brand - is developing its own version of this concept. The upcoming Scout Traveler SUV and Terra pickup will be available with a "Harvester Range Extender" that promises to boost range to 500 miles. As with ZF's eRE setup, the Harvester system uses a gasoline engine strictly as a generator, not as a means of direct propulsion.What they all share in common is intent: extending range through smarter architecture, not just bigger batteries.
ZF's system is ready for global adoption. Manufacturing begins in 2026, with the company targeting automakers across Europe, China, and North America. BMW is reportedly trialing range-extender concepts with its iX5 hydrogen test vehicles, while other brands - particularly those not developing ground-up EV platforms - are evaluating ZF's solution as a retrofit-friendly option.The company previously worked on range-extender setups for London black cabs and is now investing heavily in modular, powertrain-agnostic components that help manufacturers adapt without overhauling their entire production line.For consumers, that could mean EVs that charge less often, cost less upfront, and offer better winter performance - all without forcing a compromise on driving feel or emissions targets.

Global EV sales jump 24% in June though North American market struggles, research firm says
By Alessandro Parodi (Reuters) -Global sales of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles jumped 24% in June from a year ago, as a switch to electric vehicles maintained momentum in China and Europe, market research firm Rho Motion said on Tuesday. Still, EV sales in the United States were down 1% in the month and will struggle to pick up this year, after President Donald Trump's spending bill cut tax credits sooner than anticipated, Rho Motion's data manager Charles Lester said. North America, also weighed by slowing sales in Canada, lagged for the first time behind the "rest of the world" countries, which include emerging markets in Southeast Asia and South and Central America, Lester said. WHY IT'S IMPORTANT Global automakers face a 25% import tariff in the United States, the world's second-largest car market, causing many of them to withdraw their outlooks for 2025. In Europe, incentives for retail and fleet buyers in key markets such as Germany and Spain, alongside a growing availability of cheap EVs, are expected to support electric car sales through the second half of the year. While some of the most successful EVs in the small vehicle segment are produced by European carmakers such as Volkswagen and Renault, those by Chinese brands including BYD are taking up market share in the continent and driving growth in emerging markets, Lester said. BY THE NUMBERS Global sales of battery-electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids rose to 1.8 million units in June, Rho Motion data showed. Sales in China jumped 28% from the same month last year to 1.11 million vehicles. Europe posted a 23% increase to about 390,000 units, while North American sales fell 9% to over 140,000. Sales in the rest of the world surged 43% to exceed 140,000 vehicles. Overview The 2026 Volkswagen EV may be a nostalgia play, but there's plenty of genuine practicality baked into this fully electric modern Microbus reinterpretation. Three rows of seating provide room for up to seven passengers, dual sliding side doors make for easy access, and there are eight USB power ports to ensure a charging democracy. Massive expanses of glass keep the interior vibe cheery and provide excellent outward sightlines. A single-motor rear-wheel-drive powertrain is standard, but a dual-motor all-wheel drive setup is available. The dual-motor model ramps up the Buzz's performance while only putting a mild dent in its EPA-estimated 234-mile max range. Now entering its second model year, the ID. Buzz still draws enough attention that you'll make new friends wherever you go.
