Architecture software developer Nemetschek sees potential for $2.9 billion in acquisitions

CNA6 hours ago
MUNICH :The German architecture and construction software developer Nemetschek sees potential for further acquisitions of up to 2.5 billion euros ($2.92 billion), its Chief Executive Officer Yves Padrines told Reuters on Monday.
"With our balance sheet strength, and a possible capital increase if required, we would have the strength to invest between 2.0 and 2.5 billion euros in takeovers," Padrines said in an interview.
"We are looking at everything in the Planning and Design and Build and Construct segments," he added, saying that the bigger acquisitions would fall under the latter, while Planning & Design would see smaller deals.
Nemetschek generates around 42 per cent of its revenue in the U.S. but Padrines played down worries over President Donald Trump's tariff and migration policies.
"There are no tariffs on software," he said.
In July last year, Nemetschek, which rivals NASDAQ-listed Autodesk in architecture software, acquired U.S. software developer GoCanvas for around 700 million euros, the largest acquisition in its history.
The purchase is still putting pressure on margins, but Padrines believes that is about to change: "GoCanvas will adjust to our margin level over the years, so we expect an EBITDA margin in the 30s in the coming years," said Padrines. Last year, it was at 30.2 per cent.
With its 14.6 billion euro market cap, the company is seen as a candidate for trading on the country's leading index DAX.
Padrines expects the company to grow sales at an average rate of around 15 per cent in the coming years, more than the broader construction software market, which is expected to grow by just under double digits.
"The construction industry offers huge potential. I used to say that only fishing and hunting are less digitalized than the construction industry. In the meantime, digitalization has even progressed in fishing," Padrines said.
Architects and engineering firms are also conservative when it comes to switching software licenses to a subscription model, which Nemetschek is advancing, Padrines says.
"The shift there will take another few more years," he said.

Trump, NATO chief meeting puts pressure on Russia over Ukraine war

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump on Monday (Jul 14) told Russia to resolve its war in Ukraine within 50 days or face severe new economic sanctions, as he announced a major arms deal with NATO to support Kyiv's defences. "We're very, very unhappy" with Russia, Trump told reporters during a meeting at the White House with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte. "We're going to be doing very severe tariffs if we don't have a deal in 50 days, tariffs at about 100 percent," he said. Trump added that these would be "secondary tariffs" targeting Russia's remaining trade partners, aiming to further isolate Moscow amid ongoing Western sanctions. MAJOR ARMS DEAL WITH NATO Trump and Rutte also unveiled an agreement under which NATO will purchase weapons from the United States, including Patriot air defence systems, and distribute them to Ukraine. "This is billions of dollars worth of military equipment... going to NATO, and that's going to be quickly distributed to the battlefield," Trump said. Rutte, a former Dutch prime minister, said Ukraine would receive "massive numbers" of weapons under the deal. Trump, who began his second term in January, had previously attempted rapprochement with Russian President Vladimir Putin, promising to end the Ukraine war within 24 hours of taking office. However, his stance has hardened in recent weeks, especially as Russia intensified its aerial assaults. "I don't want to say he's an assassin, but he's a tough guy," Trump said of Putin. Last week, Trump teased a major Russia announcement for Monday. On Sunday, he confirmed that the United States would deliver Patriot systems to Ukraine, reversing an earlier plan to pause some weapons transfers. UKRAINE WELCOMES SUPPORT AMID ESCALATION Rutte's White House visit followed a NATO summit in The Hague last month where he described Trump as "daddy", drawing headlines. Meanwhile, Russia has launched record drone and missile attacks, with UN figures showing June had the highest civilian casualties in three years. Trump's announcement came as his special envoy Keith Kellogg met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv. Zelensky welcomed the "productive meeting" and thanked Trump for "important signals of support and the positive decisions for both our countries". "We discussed strengthening Ukraine's air defence, joint production, and procurement of defence weapons in collaboration with Europe," Zelensky said. In the war-torn east, a Ukrainian soldier who identified himself as Grizzly, welcomed the promised Patriot systems: "Better late than never... Thanks to the Patriots they are giving us, our families will be safer." Russian forces said they had seized two more villages in the Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia regions on Monday. Ukrainian officials also reported that three civilians were killed in strikes on Kharkiv and Sumy.

Equities inch down with tariffs, inflation data, earnings in focus

NEW YORK/LONDON :MSCI's global equity index edged down on Monday and U.S. Treasury yields edged higher as the latest U.S. tariff threats kept investors on edge while they waited for inflation readings and the start of earnings season due later in the week. The euro briefly hit an almost three-week low while the dollar index held steady after U.S. President Donald Trump's threat to impose a 30 per cent tariff on imports from the European Union and Mexico from August 1. European shares fell on Monday after the tariff threat. The EU said it would extend a suspension of countermeasures to U.S. tariffs until early August and continue to press for a negotiated settlement, though Germany's finance minister called for firm action if the levies went ahead. The latest tariff salvo comes as U.S. earnings season begins this week, with the major banks leading the pack. S&P 500 profits are expected to rise 5.8 per cent from the year-ago quarter, according to LSEG data. "It's all about earnings season now. People are not sure what it's going to hold. They want to be optimistic. Usually earnings season pans out better than expected," said Robert Pavlik, senior portfolio manager at Dakota Wealth in Fairfield, Connecticut, but he noted that trading valuations are "a bit expensive relative to the five-year average." "That on top of the most recent tariff announcements has people sort of just waiting on the sidelines," said the money manager. On Wall Street at 10:54 a.m. the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 53.36 points, or 0.12 per cent, to 44,318.15 while the S&P 500 fell 6.66 points, or 0.11 per cent, to 6,253.09. The Nasdaq Composite rose 18.05 points, or 0.09 per cent, to 20,603.58. MSCI's gauge of stocks across the globe fell 1.07 points, or 0.12 per cent, to 921.49 while the pan-European STOXX 600 index fell 0.26 per cent. PRESSURING POWELL While U.S. Federal Chair Jerome Powell has signalled a patient outlook on interest rate cuts, Trump is piling up political pressure for more aggressive easing. White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett over the weekend warned Trump might have grounds to fire Powell because of renovation cost overruns at the Fed's Washington headquarters. Trump said on Sunday that it would be a great thing if Powell stepped down. In U.S. treasuries, the yield on benchmark U.S. 10-year notes rose 1 basis point to 4.433 per cent, from 4.423 per cent late on Friday while the 30-year bond yield rose 2.2 basis points to 4.9791 per cent. The 2-year note yield, which typically moves in step with interest rate expectations for the Federal Reserve, fell 1.8 basis points to 3.896 per cent, from 3.914 per cent late on Friday. Besides earnings season, investors are also waiting for U.S. consumer price data for June, due on Tuesday, and will monitor for any upward pressure from tariffs. They will also watch for any tariff impact to supply chain costs in producer price and import price figures also due this week along with a view of consumer health in retail sales data. In currencies, the dollar index, which measures the greenback against a basket of currencies including the yen and the euro, rose 0.09 per cent to 97.98. The euro was down 0.08 per cent at $1.168 while against the Japanese yen, the dollar strengthened 0.07 per cent to 147.51. The Mexican peso weakened 0.65 per cent versus the dollar at 18.767, with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum confident a trade deal could be reached before the August deadline. Bitcoin crossed the $120,000 level for the first time and was last up 1.48 per cent at $120,891.36. Oil prices fell on Monday after touching their highest level in three weeks, as investors eyed further U.S. sanctions on Russia and the threat of tariffs that may affect global supplies. U.S. crude fell 0.64 per cent to $68.01 a barrel and Brent fell to $70.07 per barrel, down 0.41 per cent on the day. Gold prices steadied after hitting a three-week peak on Monday with attention on trade talks and U.S. economic data, while silver climbed to its highest level since September 2011.
