‘Can't undo past but can improve present': Delhi CM gives job letters to kin of 1984 riot victims

Indian Express27-05-2025
The 1984 riots in Delhi remain a dark chapter in the history of India, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said on Tuesday as she handed over appointment letters for government jobs to the relatives of those killed in the carnage. 'For those who lost loved ones, no compensation can ever be enough for their pain. We cannot undo the past, but we can certainly improve their present…This is more than a bureaucratic decision — it is a restoration of rightful entitlements,' said the CM at the event held at the Delhi Secretariat.
The appointment letters were handed over to 19 persons for multi-tasking staff (MTS) roles in the revenue department. Many recipients were emotional after receiving the job offers. Joginder Singh, who lost his father in the riots when he was just three, said, 'Ab hum matha tekne ja rahe hai (Now, we are going to pay obedience to God).'
'This is not just an appointment — it is justice walking into their lives after 40 years of silence and struggle,' the CM asserted. Hailing Prime Minister Narendra Modi, she underlined that the process of justice for the riot victims began after he came to power.
Delhi minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa, the Sikh face of the BJP government, was in attendance at the event. 'This moment is deeply personal—not just as a minister, but as a member of a Sikh family that has endured this pain… this wait, this hope. I proudly say today that this government has finally delivered what should have been theirs decades ago.'
'….This appointment is historic in itself, as the Delhi Government has even relaxed eligibility conditions to ensure justice is served,' he added.
Referring to the government's step as a 'landmark' in the journey towards justice, the Chief Minister said, 'By distributing these appointment letters, the Delhi government has not just provided jobs, but also recognised the dignity and identity of thousands of families who had waited decades for justice.'
The anti-sikh riots broke out in the aftermath of the assassination of Indira Gandhi, the then-Prime Minister, by her Sikh bodyguards on October 31, 1984. Thousands were killed across the country, and many families have since fought protracted legal battles for compensation and rehabilitation.
The handing out of the appointment letters on Tuesday is a part of an ongoing process. Last November, Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena distributed job letters to 50 persons, followed by 89 more in January this year, ahead of the Assembly elections in the city. The latest batch brings the total number of appointments under the government relief scheme to 158.
Atma Singh Lubana, Vice-Chairperson of the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee, who has been advocating for the victims since 1998, said, 'Many applicants were uneducated and couldn't qualify for government jobs under regular norms. It wasn't until 2024 that this requirement was waived.'
He added that over 650 applications had been submitted after camps were held at district magistrate offices. 'The problem now is that those who were in their 20s at the time of the riots are over 60 now, so they can no longer join government service. We are demanding that in such cases, the grandchild of the victim be offered the appointment instead.'
During the event, the CM also spoke about the plight of Kashmiri Pandits and those who lost loved ones during the Covid pandemic but were not provided any compensation. 'To address this, a special committee has been formed to identify such cases and provide financial support,' the Delhi government said.

Assam: 132 persons apprehended for alleged illegal cattle slaughter, unauthorised sale of beef

The Assam Police apprehended 132 persons under the state's Cattle Preservation Act on Tuesday for alleged illegal cattle slaughter and unauthorised sale of beef in eateries. A total of 112 eateries were searched during the day and 1,084 kg of meat, which the police suspect is beef, was seized, Assam Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) Akhilesh Kumar Singh told Scroll. While consumption of beef is not illegal in the state, the Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 2021, bans its slaughter and sale in areas predominantly inhabited by Hindu, Jain and Sikh communities or in areas that fall within a 5 km radius of a temple or satra (Vaishnavite monastery), or other religious institutions belonging to Hindu religion or any other institution or area as 'may be prescribed by the competent authority'. It also places tight restrictions on cattle transportation. On Tuesday, a suo-motu drive was initiated in the state to check reported incidents of illegal cattle slaughter and sale of beef in restaurants without authorisation, PTI quoted Kumar as saying. 'The main intention of the drive is to stop violation of the Assam Cattle Preservation Act,' Kumar told the news agency. In December, public consumption of beef, including at restaurants and community gatherings, was banned by the Bharatiya Janata Party government in the state. A legislation or legislative amendment to this end has not been passed yet. The crackdown on Tuesday came against the backdrop of more than 150 persons being arrested in Dhubri after animal remains alleged to be of a cow were recovered near a Hindu temple, The Indian Express reported.

‘20 to 30 bullets fired': Utah ISKCON temple targeted in suspected hate crime

The ISKCON Sri Sri Radha Krishna Temple in Spanish Fork, Utah, renowned globally for hosting the annual Holi Festival, has come under attack in a suspected hate crime, with over two dozen bullets fired at the premises over several days, causing significant structural damage. Bullet mark on a part of the ISKCON Sri Sri Radha Krishna Temple in Spanish Fork, Utah.(X/ ISKCON) According to ISKCON, 20 to 30 bullets were fired at the temple building and surrounding property during night time hours while devotees and guests were inside. The incident resulted in thousands of dollars in damage, including to the temple's intricately hand-carved arches. Condemning the attack, the Consulate General of India in San Francisco expressed solidarity with the community and urged swift action. In a post on X, it stated, "We strongly condemn the recent firing incident at the ISKCON Sri Sri Radha Krishna temple in Spanish Fork, Utah. The Consulate extends full support to all the devotees and the community and urges the local authorities to take prompt action to bring the perpetrators to justice." A similar incident had occurred earlier this year when, on March 9, a Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS) Hindu temple in Chino Hills, California, was found desecrated just days ahead of a so-called 'Khalistani referendum' in Los Angeles, according to temple authorities. The official page of BAPS for the United States shared the details of the March 9 desecration on the social media platform X and emphasised the community's resilience. "In the face of another Mandir desecration, this time in Chino Hills, CA, the Hindu community stands steadfast against hate... Our common humanity and faith will ensure that peace and compassion prevail," BAPS Public Affairs wrote. The Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA) also pointed to the incident on X, linking it to rising anti-Hindu sentiment and noting that the vandalism came shortly before the planned 'Khalistan referendum' in Los Angeles. "Another Hindu Temple vandalised, this time the iconic BAPS temple in Chino Hills, CA... Not surprisingly, this happens as the day for a so-called 'Khalistan referendum' in LA draws close," CoHNA posted, while listing other recent temple attacks since 2022 and calling for an investigation. Last year, acts of vandalism also targeted the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Sacramento, California, on the night of September 25. That incident followed closely after a similar attack on a BAPS temple in New York. Messages such as "Hindus go back" were found scrawled during those attacks, deeply alarming the local Hindu community. Despite repeated provocations, community leaders continue to affirm their unity and commitment to confronting hate.

5 BJP workers suspended for assaulting BMC officer

Bhubaneswar: A day after Odisha Administrative Services (OAS) officer and Additional Commissioner of Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) Ratnakar Sahoo was assaulted by some alleged supporters of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Jagannath Pradhan, the party State unit president Manmohan Samal on Tuesday suspended five BJP workers, including a corporator, from the primary membership of the party. The suspended party workers include Corporator Aparup Narayan Raut, Rashmi Ranjan Mohapatra, Debashis Pradhan, Sachikant Swain and Sanjeev Mishra. Acting on the FIR lodged by the victim OAS officer Sahoo, the police had earlier arrested three BJP workers, Raut, Mohapatra and Debashis for their involvement in the assault. Meanwhile, senior BJP leader Jagannath Pradhan on Tuesday claimed that the allegations made against him by Mayor Sulochana Das and other BJD leaders were nothing but political vendetta. 'I condemn the attack on the Additional Commissioner. Action has already been taken against the accused, and the Chief Minister has also held discussions with BMC officials and other stakeholders. We extend full sympathy to Ratnakar Sahoo. This incident should not have happened,' said Pradhan. Pradhan further said that if anyone from his constituency takes his name while committing a crime, it does not imply his involvement. 'How could such an incident happen inside a secure office when the Mayor herself was present? It appears they allowed this to happen, filmed the incident, and circulated it in the media to politicise the matter,' alleged Pradhan, while questioning the security arrangements at the BMC office. Giving the background of the incident, Pradhan alleged that the public outrage against the senior officer of the BMC stemmed from an issue involving a Swachh Sathi — a sanitation volunteer supported by Mission Shakti — from his constituency. 'She was assigned the task of mobilising beneficiaries for a recent government event marking one year of the State government's formation, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi was scheduled to join. She fulfilled her duty, but BJD-backed people and the Additional Commissioner targeted her for helping make the event successful,' claimed Pradhan. Pradhan said he had raised the matter with the BMC Commissioner after learning that the volunteer was harassed by officials. 'The persons involved had only gone to the BMC office to discuss the issue. Unfortunately, an altercation broke out, which could have been avoided. But the Mayor unnecessarily escalated the matter,' he added. On the other hand, the Swachh Sathi concerned, Rebati Rout, claimed that BMC Additional Commissioner Sahoo had allegedly threatened that she would lose her job for facilitating people to take part in the recent rally of Prime Minister Modi in Bhubaneswar. Notably, at around 11.30 am on Monday, when the public grievance meeting was in progress in the presence of other officers, staff and general people at the BMC office, six to seven unknown individuals entered the premises unauthorisedly and assaulted Sahoo after enquiring whether he had a conversation with BJP leader Jagannath Pradhan over the phone. The Odisha Administrative Service Association (OASA) came out in support of Sahoo announcing that it would go on mass leave from Tuesday.
