Chris Tarrant reveals heartbreaking reason he left TV career after 52 years
Chris Tarrant has revealed the heartbreaking reason he left the TV world after starring on some of the country's biggest shows for 52 years.
The legendary host, 78, is best known for presenting iconic kids show Tiswas between 1974 and 1981 and quiz series Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? for 16 years.
Tarrant began moving away from regular TV work in the 2010s, quitting Millionaire in 2014 – but he did still present the docuseries Extreme Railway Journeys between 2012 and 2020.
Since the Covid-19 pandemic, however, his face has been seen less and less, with his last appearance coming in 2021 documentary Britain Biggest 1970s Hits.
In 2025, Tarrant has now given a detailed but heartbreaking explanation for why he's now retired from the glitz and glamour of primetime programmes.
Speaking to MailOnline, he reflected on decision to leave it all behind: '52 years is a long time on air. I loved what I did. I had a really good time.
'But I went to the funerals of five really good mates, who were about the same age as me, and I thought, 'I don't know how long I've got left in life, but I don't want to spend it locked away in a studio.''
One of those friends was the late Sir Terry Wogan, the legendary Irish TV and radio broadcaster who died in 2016 – he was 77, a year younger than Tarrant is now.
Continuing his story, Tarrant said he briefly considered retiring in 2014 after suffering a mini-stroke, which left him needing long-term speech therapy to get back to his best.
'I had a lucky escape. I can chat to you now, [my body] is working. But I did have to have speech therapy. It took a while to get everything back. It was scary.'
In 2020, he told The Mirror he was stepping down because he no longer needed the money and wanted to spend more time with his family in retirement.
'I've stopped working. Lockdown started to get everything in a bit perspective and I thought, 'I've done this thing for 50 years. I don't need the money.' More Trending
'Without sounding silly, why am I still doing this? I've done lots of things that I've been putting off instead that have been great.'
He continued: 'I went on safari with my two eldest grandkids. [Wife] Jane and I have just come back from Borneo. I've just come back from photographing bears in Alaska. Why the hell would I go for work for?'
Despite publicly announcing his retirement just before Christmas last year, Tarrant revealed that the offers were still coming in from TV producers.

Chris confessed that he 'turned down' hosting The Masked Singer and had no further desire to front another travel show as he didn't want to be told 'where to go, what to do and, you know, schedules'.

Glastonbury headliner ‘had to use cheat sheet on stage to remember lyrics of most famous songs'
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) NEIL Young reportedly had to use a cheat sheet during his Glastonbury headline set to remember the lyrics to some of his most famous songs. Rock legend Neil, 79, is believed to have been seen glancing at a printed song sheet during the final 25 minutes of his 110-minute Pyramid Stage performance on Saturday night. One festivalgoer told MailOnline: 'You'd think he would know the words by now, he has been singing these songs for years. 'But maybe it's difficult to play the piano and remember the lyrics.' Neil - one of the oldest artists ever to headline Glastonbury - performed a set packed with hits including Rockin' in the Free World and Throw Your Hatred Down. However, the performance appeared to attract a smaller crowd than previous Saturday night headliners, with some attendees noting that the field in front of the Pyramid Stage was unusually sparse. One wrote on social media: 'So empty at Neil Young," while another added: Pyramid stage field isn't even a quarter full by the looks of it.' The appearance marked his first Glastonbury performance since 2009. Neil had initially turned down this year's offer, criticising the BBC's involvement with the festival and claiming it was 'under corporate control'. Representatives for Neil and Glastonbury have been contacted for comment. But that wasn't Neil's only trouble during the gig. Neil Young's Glastonbury slot 'dogged by sound issues' The Canadian rock veteran also had difficulties with his microphone throughout the set. He opened his show with Sugar Mountain, saying, 'Thank you folks," to the crowd as the song ended. But those watching it were not impressed, with one person commenting: 'Someone tell Neil Young to sing into a microphone.' A second moaned: 'Sound needs turning up like ffs, he's shredding that axe and you can hardly hear it.' While a third said: 'Neil young with 48 microphones and none of them able to make his voice sound much beyond a grumble. Glastonbury has had a real hard time with the headliners the last couple of years…' And a fourth added: 'Watched a few minutes of this Neil Young man, this is like the worst thing I've ever seen and heard. 'It's a no from me! Neil Young should not be headlining!Terrible!' raged another. The star's set was shown live on the BBC after the broadcaster had previously said it would not be transmitted live "at the artist's request". Earlier on Saturday, a BBC statement said: "We are delighted to confirm that Neil Young's headline set from Glastonbury on Saturday will be broadcast live to audiences across the UK on the BBC." Neil's performance was not guaranteed as earlier in the year he temporarily pulled out of, claiming it is a "corporate turn-off" due to its broadcast deal with the BBC. He said on his website: "We were told that BBC was now a partner in Glastonbury and wanted us to do a lot of things in a way we were not interested in. "It seems Glastonbury is now under corporate control and is not the way I remember it being." But just days later he did a surprise U-turn, the singer confirmed his slot blaming "an error in the information I received" for him initially turning down the offer. A statement on his website read: "Due to an error in the information received, I had decided to not play the Glastonbury Festival, which I always have loved. "Happily, the festival is now back on our itinerary and we look forward to playing. Hope to see you there." The Sun first reported that the singer was booked to headline Glastonbury, 16 years after he last played on the Pyramid Stage. Glastonbury 2025 - confirmed acts so far TICKETS to the 2025 festival sold out in just minutes before some of the acts were even confirmed. Here is who has been confirmed so far. Confirmed headliners: The 1975 will take to the Pyramid Stage on Friday. Neil Young will headline the festival for the second time after his last set in 2009 on Saturday after RAYE makes her return. Charli xcx will headline the Other Stage on Saturday night. On Sunday, Olivia Rodrigo is due to belt out her hits for her first appearance while Rod Stewart will perform in the legends slot. Zara McDermott under fire for Glastonbury photo after Louis Tomlinson left her
Zara McDermott is dating One Direction singer Louis Tomlinson and she attended her first ever Glastonbury festival this weekend with Louis, who is a veteran attendee of the festival Zara McDermott has come under fire for her Glastonbury festival post after attending with One Direction singer Louis Tomlinson. The pair's romance has been heating up over the recent months, but they are yet to share a photo together. Zara attended her first ever Glastonbury festival this weekend, where she partied with Louis and his sister Lottie Tomlinson. However, she has been heavily criticised for her post - as fans fumed over one thing. One person wrote: "girlie, why in the grass when you can do it standing ik like lottie, let people pass :D," whilst another added: "THIS IS GLASTONBURY NOT COACHELLA Say it again so you remember!" "This is the kind of photos influencers take on Coachella, not Glasto. Read the room please, this is just embarrassing," a third shared online, with a fourth adding: "Is it Glastonbury, or Coachella?" However, other fans rushed to social media to support Zara and fume at the spiteful comments. One penned: "Why do you all need to knock her down? She is literally just living her life. You look beautiful Zara." "Jesus christ, some of you are like kids! Leave her be. I'd be taking pics of my 1st Glastonbury too if I had bottle to go but too many people for me to cope. Grow up some of you and let her and her bloke navigate their relationship!!" another added. The Mirror exclusively revealed Zara and Louis spent the final night of the festival watching The Prodigy. "Louis was loving The Prodigy. He dragged her along to the Other Stage and had a ball dancing to their hits. Zara danced along before leaving hand in hand with Louis before the set ended," a source told us. The pair did not post together at Glastonbury but Zara did share a lot of videos and photos with Louis' sister Lottie, who was there with Lewis Burton. She shared a snap of them on her story as they all danced together. They are still trying to keep things quiet about their relationship on social media and the pair didn't even camp together at the festival, it has been revealed. Zara chose to stay off site whilst Louis stayed on site with his friends - and even had a tent just for alcohol. Another source told The Mirror: "Louis is determined to make it a weekend to remember and has planned everything with military like precision - including making sure enough booze is available. "He has his own tent - and one just for the drinks. Everyone is saying it's a nice break for him and Zara, but it's a great way also for Zara to meet his mates. It will definitely be a boozy one and not a particularly romantic one."

Hollyoaks actor who starred in Netflix's Adolescence marries girlfriend
Former Hollyoaks star Connor Calland has tied the knot with a well-known TikTok star. The actor, 28, played Jordan Price in the Channel 4 soap for exactly one year from December 2019. Arriving to sell drugs to his cousin Sid Sumner (Billy Price), he soon began a county lines operation in the village. He recruited a number of the Hollyoaks teens – including Ella Richardson (Erin Palmer), who fatally stabbed Jordan on New Year's Eve to evade him. At the time of his exit, he told Metro that bosses kept quiet about the character's death. 'It was a funny feeling [when I found out],' he said. 'I remember speaking with [Executive Producer] Bryan Kirkwood about it, and obviously everyone wants to be working, and especially with Hollyoaks, I've had such a good time over the past year. 'Obviously, I would've loved to have stayed there, but I think understanding where the story was going and what happens in the final episode, it was quite nice to be given this responsibility — this year-long responsibility.' While still appearing on the serial drama, he went public in his relationship with TikTok influencer Monica Geldart. The 26-year old internet personality has amassed over 2.4 million followers on social media since she became a viral phenomenon during the COVID-19 pandemic and worked as an arts technician in a Harrogate school prior to finding fame. Connor and Monica announced their engagement in March 2023. Now, two years on, the two have walked down the aisle in an intimate ceremony on Friday.
