New York Giants' Jameis Winston hilariously compares Jaxson Dart to Taysom Hill

USA Today6 days ago
This version of the New York Giants is unlike the ones that we've seen over the past decade or so. This is a diverse group of talents and personalities that are ushering in a much-needed breath of fresh air.
Perhaps the most colorful character of the bunch so far has been the veteran quarterback Jameis Winston. Entering his 11th season in the NFL, Winston, a former Heisman Trophy winner and No. 1 overall NFL draft selection, has a huge catalog of experience to draw on from the highest of highs to the lowest of lows.
Winston is the perfect blend of experience and attitude for rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart to be fostered under, and he knows what to do and what not to do as a professional football player.
Winston has essentially seen it all since coming into the NFL with Tampa Bay in 2015. He's been a franchise quarterback, a backup, and a reclamation project at different points in his career.
"It's fun learning a new offense because it keeps you in the curious mode," he told reporters on Sunday. "You're asking consistent questions, you're asking, 'Hey, what does this look like?' You're asking for clips like, 'How does this look vs. this coverage?' I love that, and it just brings out the little kid in me again.
"Sometimes when you get continuity, you're always thinking about the next step and you don't get to focus on just the basics, especially when you're installing. Now, as (Mike) Kafka is installing, I get to learn the basics, and as camp prolongs, I will continue to learn, 'Okay, now this is why we're making this transition. This is why we're adding this look, route to specific concepts.'"
With the Giants, Winston is here for depth and is under no illusions about his status and his role. He is behind Russell Wilson on the depth chart and next to Dart, for the moment, but he knows what the future holds. He's been here before.
When Winston was with the New Orleans Saints, he would drive the team the length of the field only to be replaced in the red zone by the versatile tight ned/quarterback/fullback Taysom Hill. These days, Winston is being asked to step aside for Dart, not for Dart to run, but in general.
It happened to close out practice on Sunday.
"Man, you know I'm used to it. If you remember in New Orleans, Taysom Hill -- I used to drive the team all the way the field and then Taysom Hill used to come in and run quarterback power and score a touchdown, so I was like, 'Hey, Jaxson is Tayson Hill,'" Winston said.
"Tayson's from Idaho but Jaxson's from Utah. I was like, 'It's that Utah connection.' Every time I have a good drive, they're going to take me out and put a kid from Utah in to come score a touchdown. No, but he needs those reps. He needs those red zone reps. I've been in the red zone a lot and that was a good drive. I knew I was going to end up in the end zone, so it allowed me to visualize myself being in the end zone again."
The Giants knew what they were doing by bringing in Winston. He is a positive influence in the quarterback room, the locker room, the huddle, and the sidelines. His demeanor and experience are taking the pressure off both Wilson and Dart while giving the Giants another option under center if needed.

Philadelphia Eagles Star Hit with Sudden Injury Blow

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. With the first week of the NFL Preseason approaching for the Philadelphia Eagles, the team is dealing with notable injuries in the wide receiver group. AJ Brown is the latest addition. The star wideout is reportedly dealing with a hamstring injury. While the injury doesn't seem overly concerning at this time, it will be something to monitor as the offseason plays out. After all, hamstring setbacks tend to get tricky. Hamstring injury for A.J. Brown. — Jeff McLane (@Jeff_McLane) August 3, 2025 Brown has been Jalen Hurts' top wideout since he landed with the Eagles via trade in 2022. Brown started his NFL career with the Tennessee Titans, but was traded following his third season. The Eagles have surely benefited from the presence of Brown, who kicked off his Eagles stint with nearly 1,500 yards and over 10 touchdowns. In 2022, Brown was the top wideout on the NFC Champions, who came up just short against the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl. Two years ago, Brown had another spectacular season with the Eagles, as he caught a career-high 106 passes. He nearly notched his career-high once again, after posting 1,456 yards. He also found the endzone for seven scores in 17 games. A.J. It showed in Jalen Hurts' passing numbers and in Brown's receiving production as well. Dealing with injuries at times, Brown appeared in just 13 games for Philadelphia last year. He caught just 67 passes, which was by far his lowest since joining the Eagles. The star wide receiver still cracked the 1,000-yard mark, but not by much. He reached the endzone for seven touchdowns. Despite a lack of regular-season production, Brown would shine throughout the playoffs. In four games, he produced a playoff career-high 163 yards and scored twice. One of his touchdowns came in the Super Bowl, where the Eagles dominated the Chiefs, getting their revenge from a couple of seasons ago. The chances of Brown getting burn in the preseason were likely always going to be slim this season. Since the 28-year-old is well-established at this stage in his career, he doesn't need the meaningless reps before a long season. Still, the setback is notable. Brown will be a player to keep an eye on in the coming days. For more Philadelphia Eagles and NFL news, head over to Newsweek Sports.

Former Panthers draft pick retires on Sunday

A hog molly has called it quits on his football career. As announced by the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday morning, offensive lineman Dennis Daley has been placed on the reserve/retired list. The soon-to-be 29-year-old played his first three NFL seasons with the Carolina Panthers. Daley, a Fort Lauderdale, Fla. native, was drafted by the Panthers in the sixth round of the 2019 draft. The University of South Carolina product went on to start nine games at left tackle as a rookie. The 2020 and 2021 campaigns saw Daley start in 12 of his 20 outings for Carolina. In addition to left tackle, where he recorded 924 total snaps as a Panther, he also lined up at left guard (336 snaps) and right guard (124). Carolina, in August of 2022, traded Daley and a 2024 seventh-round pick to the Tennessee Titans in exchange for a 2024 fifth-rounder. That fifth-round selection was eventually traded by the Panthers to the Indianapolis Colts in their move up for second-round running back Jonathon Brooks. Daley would then go on to pick up stops with the Arizona Cardinals (2023) and the Jaguars (2024).This article originally appeared on Panthers Wire: Former Panthers, OL Dennis Daley retires

Former star Alabama cornerback reportedly signs with NFL team

According to a report Saturday from NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, former Alabama Crimson Tide cornerback Levi Wallace is signing with the Jacksonville Jaguars as a free agent. Wallace, a seven-year NFL veteran, had yet to sign with a team this offseason, and was among the list of former Alabama players still remaining in free agency. The former Alabama cornerback most recently played with the Denver Broncos during the 2024 season, starting 2-of-13 games played. During that span, Wallace had 28 tackles, which was the lowest total of his career, along with two passes defensed. Over his seven previous seasons in the league, Wallace has compiled 333 career tackles with seven TFL and 12 interceptions across 96 career games, 72 of which he started. Undrafted out of Alabama back in 2018, Jacksonville will also be Wallace's fourth NFL team, joining the Buffalo Bills, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Broncos.
