Why SP is stepping up to mark Kanwar Yatra: ‘PDA' banners to Mulayam, Akhilesh photos
The SP has sought to give its own touch to the Kanwar Yatra, which is one of the main religious events in North India every year, involving many devotees from UP. The SP workers have got pictures of Akhilesh and party founder late Mulayam Singh Yadav as well as slogans pasted on kanwars — the containers with holy water from the Ganges that the devotees carry back home after undertaking the yatra.
On July 16, a group of 15 SP workers started the Kanwar Yatra from Haridwar in Uttarakhand. They will be travelling to a Shiva temple in Noida in a vehicle with a music system and large banners stating: 'Samajwadi PDA dwara vishal Kanwar Yatra (SP PDA's majestic Kanwar Yatra)'.
On Friday, Akhilesh posted a video of the SP workers' Kanwar journey, with a message that the party has been praying for for public welfare. This messaging is in line with his PDA (Pichhda, Dalit, Alpasankhyak) outreach, aimed at reaching out to the backward classes, Scheduled Castes (SCs) and minorities.
Noida-based SP leader Praveen Yadav, who is supervising this Kanwar Yatra, said the BJP's followers often take part in such a Yatra with photographs of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. He, however, claimed that 'There is no politics behind our Kanwar Yatra. It is a matter of faith only.'
The SP's strategy is aimed at countering allegations of 'minority appeasement' levelled against it by the BJP. The ruling party has repeatedly accused the SP of allegedly 'ignoring the interests of Hindu devotees for the appeasement of Muslims'.
SP spokesperson Rajendra Chaudhary said: 'This is a reply to BJP which claims that only it has association with such religious programmes. Yatra is a matter of faith and everyone can participate in it. BJP uses Kanwar Yatra only for political purposes.'
Chaudhary said that SP workers were starting their Kanwar Yatra from Haridwar under the supervision of party national secretary S N Sachan. 'They are SP workers and doing it in favour of the party and PDA in their own capacity. Party's Muslim workers are welcoming them and offering them refreshments,' he added.
Earlier this week, the SP's Kairana MP Iqra Hasan attended a Kanwar Yatra camp in Saharanpur in west UP, wore a saffron scarf and served meals to devotees.
On July 7, at a press conference in Lucknow, Akhilesh said he would construct a dedicated corridor for the movement of devotees undertaking the Kanwar Yatra in the event of the SP coming to power. He also alleged that the BJP dispensation has not made adequate arrangements for the Kanwariyas.
'They (BJP government) are constructing a Gorakhpur link (road) by spending Rs 7,000 crore. But they cannot develop a corridor with Rs 1,000 crore for Kanwariyas,' Akhilesh said.
A day later, UP Deputy CM and senior BJP leader Keshav Prasad Maurya accused the previous SP-led administrations of firing on 'Ram bhakts' and lathicharging 'Shiv bhakts'.
The Etawah temple is nearing completion in the next six months, ahead of the 2027 state Assembly polls. The temple is spread across about 11 acres of land in the heart of the Yadav belt and is already attracting about 1,000 devotees each month.
The temple's foundation was laid by Akhilesh in 2021, seven months after Prime Minister Narendra Modi did the same for the Ram Temple in Ayodhya. Its consecration ceremony was led by SP MP Dimple Yadav, Akhilesh's wife, around the same time when PM Modi inaugurated the Ram Temple in January 2024.

UP minister Pratibha Shukla protests against own govt again, now over ‘targeting' Brahmins
As per Shukla's close aides, the issue began with a road being constructed using MLA funds in the Badlapur area (Akbarpur Nagar Panchayat) of Kanpur district. A local councillor named Shamshad objected to the location of the road and stopped the work. When Pratibha Shukla found out, she visited the spot of the argument between her supporters and the councillor. Later that evening, based on a complaint by the contractor, a case was filed against Councillor Shamshad for allegedly disrupting government work and demanding money. Pratibha Shukla staged a dharna on 24 and 25 July at Akbarpur police station, accusing that her close aides were specifically targeted by the police. She demanded that the local police inspector be removed. Police officers tried to persuade her to end the protest, but she refused to budge. Lucknow: Months after raising concerns about 'irregularities' in Anganwadi recruitment, Uttar Pradesh's Minister of State, Pratibha Shukla, is once again in the spotlight, but this time for protesting against the state police. Before Shukla, many other BJP leaders, including MLA Prakash Dwivedi and Dev Mani Dwivedi also, alleged that Brahmins were being targeted in the state. As per a rough estimate, Thakurs make up around 6 percent of Uttar Pradesh's population, while Brahmins constitute around 9 percent. Both communities are seen to have played a key role in bringing the BJP to power in the state for two consecutive terms since 2017. Pratibha Shukla's husband Anil Shukla is a former BSP MP. He joined the BJP in 2015 along with his wife. He has also been part of the Samajwadi Party earlier. In 2017, his wife Pratibha won the Akbarpur-Raniya assembly constituency on a BJP ticket. She specifically blamed District Programme Officers (DPOs) and their staff for manipulating recruitment procedures. In her letter, she mentioned that during her visits to various districts, she had received numerous complaints about corruption in the hiring process. She noted that everything from accepting applications to shortlisting candidates was being done under the DPO's supervision. Shukla is one of several ministers in Yogi Adityanath's second term who have openly raised concerns about their own government's officials. Before her, leaders like Deputy CM Brajesh Pathak, Cabinet Minister Ashish Patel, Nand Kumar Nandi, Sanjay Nishad, Minister of State (Independent Charge) Dinesh Pratap Singh, and Minister of State Dinesh Khatik have also questioned bureaucratic functioning on different occasions. Opposition motion in RS to oust Justice Varma was submitted, not admitted
NEW DELHI: The Lok Sabha will take up an all-party motion to remove Justice Yashwant Varma of Allahabad HC over the cash-in-house controversy. The opposition-sponsored notice for a similar motion in the Rajya Sabha hasn't been admitted. The RS chairperson would've had an equal say in the matter if RS secretariat ruled otherwise. All parties agree Varma ouster should be a joint call, says Rijiju The decision about Lok Sabha taking up the matter, announced by parliamentary affairs minister Kiren Rijiju, was followed by 152 members drawn from all political parties signing the motion. The issue is said to be at the core of former RS chairman and ex-Veep Jagdeep Dhankhar's abrupt resignation on Monday. Dhankhar had accepted the motion signed by 63 opposition members against Justice Yashwant Varma despite the decision at all-party meeting on Sunday that process for the removal of the judge should begin in the LS. Dhankhar's action of accepting opposition's notice is said to have set in motion a chain of events, murmurs of a "secret deal" and, crucially, a move by BJP-led coalition to signal their loss of trust in the Chairman, leading to his surprise exist on "health grounds". Rijiju reiterated Friday that there was a unanimous decision of all political parties to move for the removal of Varma, asserting that the Lok Sabha will take up the motion. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The minister said all political parties had agreed that the removal of Justice Varma should be a joint call, adding that the proceedings will be taken up in the Lok Sabha and then moved to the Rajya Sabha, in line with the Judges (Inquiry) Act. "We shouldn't remain in any doubt; proceedings will begin in the Lok Sabha," he said. Section 3, sub-section (2) of the Act says, "If notices of motions for removal of a Judge are given on the same day in both Houses of Parliament, no committee shall be constituted unless the motion has been admitted in both Houses, and where such motion has been admitted in both Houses, the committee shall be constituted jointly by the speaker and the chairman."
