Spike Lee Says Denzel Washington Deserved Oscar for ‘Malcolm X' Over Al Pacino: ‘It's Like Basketball, Where the Ref Blows a Call'

Yahoo20-05-2025
At a Cannes press conference for his new film 'Highest 2 Lowest' on Tuesday, Spike Lee reflected on his five collaborations with Denzel Washington — and said he should have won the best actor Oscar in 1993 over Al Pacino.
''Malcolm X,' what he did with that film was amazing,' Lee said. 'And no disrespect to my brother Al Pacino, I love him. But Denzel, in my opinion, should have won.'

Pacino ended up taking home the gold for his performance in Martin Brest's 'Scent of a Woman,' and Washington eventually won the best actor trophy in 2002 for 'Training Day.' However, Lee added that he doesn't measure his success with awards.
'With these awards, it's like basketball, where the ref blows a call and you have to make a call. So the make a call I think was 'Training Day,' which he won an Oscar for,' Lee said. 'But we don't do our work for awards, which are nice, but it's the work that is going to stand above all awards.'
Asked if he and Washington would be collaborating more in the future, Lee said, 'I think this is it.'
'He's been talking about retirement, so… Even though he just did another deal,' Lee continued. 'I thought you said you were retired Denzel, what's up?! But those five films together, those stand up.'
Washington stars in 'Highest 2 Lowest,' which premiered at Cannes on Monday night to a 5.5-minute standing ovation. An English-language remake of Japanese director Akira Kurosawa's 1963 film 'High and Low,' 'Highest 2 Lowest' is set in modern day New York and stars Washington as a music mogul tied up in a life-or-death ransom plot. A$AP Rocky plays Yung Felon, an aspiring rapper who will stop at nothing to achieve his dream. Neither were on hand at the Cannes press conference for the film.

Liam Payne sings with fans on 'Building the Band' in final appearance before his death

Liam Payne 's final major onscreen appearance in Netflix's "Building the Band" has aired. Payne served as a guest judge on the reality singing competition prior to his death in October last year. The former One Direction member tragically died at the age of 31 on Oct. 16, 2024, after falling from the third floor of his hotel in Argentina. His body was found in the hotel's inner courtyard, where he was pronounced dead at the scene, according to state police. While filming the reality competition show, Payne joined the audience between performances, singing and dancing along to the One Direction song "What Makes You Beautiful," according a video posted by Netflix on Tuesday to tease his appearance in the episodes. The clip captures that moment, showing the crowd singing along as the song plays during what appears to be production breaks. Payne is then seen standing up from his seat at the judge's panel, walking to the crowd, and singing offstage before high-fiving everyone and returning to the stage. Netflix also included a tribute at the beginning of the clip, which read, "In loving memory of Liam Payne." Hosted by AJ McLean of the Backstreet Boys, the show follows six bands as they work to perfect their sound and performances, with one band ultimately winning a $500,000 prize. The first set of episodes premiered in early July, and the final three episodes, including the finale, are now available to stream. Payne makes his first appearance in episode 7 of the show. Nicole Scherzinger mentors the bands and Kelly Rowland serves as a guest judge alongside Payne in the episode. The series also opens with a dedication to Payne and his family, with McLean paying tribute to the late singer in the first episode. "When we came together to film 'Building the Band,' we never imagined we'd soon be saying goodbye to our friend Liam Payne," McLean says. "Liam is a guest judge in later episodes, and through his presence, we see his deep love for music and his unwavering commitment to helping others find their voice. It's through that spirit that we dedicate this series to Liam and his family." Season 1 of "Building the Band" is now available to stream on Netflix.

Tim McGraw, Reese Witherspoon and More Stars With Family Members Who Committed Serious Crimes

It's a celebrity (adjacent) crime wave! See why stars' law-breaking relatives wound up behind bars. Woody Harrelson It's like something out of a movie! The Natural Born Killers star is the son of an actual mobster and contract killer, though the felon was absent for much of the actor's childhood. Among several killings attributed to the 63-year-old's father is the 1979 murder-for-hire of a U.S. district judge on behalf of a drug dealer. Charles V. Harrelson was sentenced to life in prison and died in 2007. 'I tried for years to get him out,' Woody told The Guardian. 'To get him a new trial… just being a son trying to help his dad.' Tim McGraw The 58-year-old didn't learn his dad was baseball great Edwin 'Tug' McGraw until he stumbled upon his birth certificate at age 11. While they eventually met, his dad denied fathering him until after the country music star turned 18. Maybe he should have stayed away from his newfound family: According to The Associated Press via My Plainview, in 2003, Tug's brother Dennis was convicted of first-degree murder in the shooting death of a neighbor and sentenced to 25 years to life in prison! Billy Bob Thornton The Oscar winner has been married six times and has four kids, though he is not close to all of them. In 2011, the 69-year-old's estranged daughter Amanda Brumfield was sentenced to 20 years in prison for aggravated manslaughter for the 2008 death of a child who was in her care, the Palm Beach Post reported. (Amanda's attorneys argued that the 1-year-old was injured trying to get out of a playpen.) Per The Ledger, she was released in 2020, reportedly with the stipulation that she would stop 'pressing her innocence in court.' Reese Witherspoon We knew the Legally Blonde star had her own scrape with the law ('You're about to find out who I am,' the 49-year-old threatened an Atlanta cop who pulled over the actress and then-husband Jim Toth on suspicion of DUI in 2013 via a video obtained by TMZ). Turns out, Reese's big brother John also has a record. In 2002, he was charged with entering a female neighbor's home in Tennessee. According to a sworn affidavit obtained by New York Post, he allegedly 'began kissing the victim on the neck and face' without her consent. Charged with sexual battery, a felony, he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor and was placed on two years probation. Leighton Meester 'My parents had been part of a very interesting lifestyle, I guess you could say,' the 39-year-old once told Ellen DeGeneres during an appearance on her former talk show. You can say that again! In 1983, the Gossip Girl alum's mom, Connie, was busted for helping to smuggle 1,200 lbs of marijuana out of Jamaica, and after Leighton's birth had to spend 16 months behind bars. (Also, Leighton's aunt broke out of prison and became the first woman in America to get on the U.S. Marshals 15 Most Wanted List!) Tobey Maguire Is that why he became the crime-fighting Spider-Man? According to The Independent, in 1993, the 50-year-old's father, Vincent, was convicted of robbing a bank in Reseda, Calif. No career criminal, he reportedly neglected to wear a mask and was quickly IDed and arrested, then spent two years in the pokey. Perhaps Vincent was driven by desperation. Tobey once told The Guardian, 'As a kid, I was very poor… I always had a roof over my head, but I slept on couches of relatives, and some nights we wandered into a shelter. '
