Welsh actor Taron Egerton is said to have taken on a role in the new series Smoke without prior knowledge of the true crime it's based on. The Apple TV+ nine-part series draws from the 2021 podcast Firebug by Truth Media, which delves into the story of a serial arsonist who targeted businesses in Southern California during the '80s and '90s.
In the series, Egerton plays Dave, an arson investigator who teams up with detective Michelle Calderone, played by Jurnee Smollett to apprehend two elusive serial arsonists he's been pursuing for months.
Before filming began, the actor admitted to the Radio Times that he was unaware of the "disturbing" real events that inspired Dennis Lehane's series and hadn't listened to Firebug before he agreed to the role. For the latest TV and showbiz gossip sign up to our newsletter .
The actor who grew up in Aberystwyth had said that he had found many aspects of the case not only disturbing but also perplexing due to the bizarre nature of the arsonist's actions. Taron saw it as a significant challenge to combine these peculiarities into a single, believable character.
He shared: "I think that's really true of the show. It's a real juggle, sort of trying to figure out who Dave is and who the other characters in the show are as well, because no one is very easily squeezed into a box."
Taron was enthused about the project right from the start, eager to work with his Blackbird showrunner Lehane again and delve into the complexities of what he described as a "fascinating" character marked by a flawed sense of heroism.

He explained to the Radio Times: "I was actually pretty sure I was gonna do it before I read the script because [Dennis and I] started talking about it when we were still shooting Blackbird
"So it's been a long time in the works. But when he did finally send me the first couple of scripts, god, I was so excited."
Taking on the role of Dave seemed like uncharted territory for the actor. He said: "It's a fascinating role, he's so unlike anything that I've ever been asked to play before, and actually, in a lot of ways, really unlike anything that I've seen on TV before.
"He's not split personality, but he has somehow compartmentalised who he is in a way that's really strange, and if you have an insight into what's going on behind closed doors, it's really quite disturbing.
"Dave is somebody who would style himself as a hero and as just a regular Joe who's trying to save the day.
"On the surface of things, that doesn't seem that unnerving, but anyone in real life who would describe themself as a hero is probably someone I'd think was a little bit weird. And Dave is definitely more than a little bit weird."
Taron hinted that as the series unfolds, Dave gains more insight into his identity and purpose, yet he cautioned that it's sometimes a disconcerting journey for the audience.

Gabby Logan admits major change 'hasnt really hit me' as she shares family update
Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info Popular TV host Gabby Logan has candidly spoken about a significant shift in her family dynamics, confessing that "it hasn't really hit me." Last year, the new Match of the Day presenter expressed her emotions as she grappled with the prospect of an "empty nest" for the first time, with her daughter Lois gearing up to head off to Loughborough University. Her twin brother, Reuben, had already flown the nest a year earlier and is keen to replicate his father's success, having kicked off his rugby career with Northampton Saints in 2023 before a recent switch to Sale Sharks. During an episode of her Mid Point podcast last August, Gabby opened up about the emotional toll she anticipated feeling once Lois left home. She highlighted the contrast between her son and daughter's departures, noting that while Reuben managed to come home every weekend, she thought she would go weeks without seeing Lois. (Image: Fast forward nearly a year, and Gabby has welcomed her husband, Kenny, back onto the podcast to reflect on the changes over the past year. Despite her earlier predictions of seeing less of Lois after her move to university, Gabby remarked: "He's (Reuben) now been gone for two years, and Lois has now had a year at university. I don't feel like she's been away." She added: "I feel like we're so busy, and she's been in and out all the time, that it hasn't really hit me at all — the kind of empty nest yet." (Image: David Rogers, Getty Images) Gabby has also shared her thoughts on the exciting crossover between her career and her son's, following the announcement of his transfer to Sale Sharks in Greater Manchester. It comes as Gabby herself is preparing for a new chapter in her broadcasting career, having been confirmed earlier this year as one of the new presenters on Match of the Day. She'll be joining forces with Mark Chapman and Kelly Cates from August, broadcasting from the Salford studio. (Image: James Gill - Danehouse, Getty Images) Before securing her spot on Match of the Day, Gabby was already a familiar face in sports broadcasting, having covered an array of major events such as the 2012 London Olympics, European Championships, World Cups, and Champions League finals. Aside from her broadcasting achievements, Gabby is also known for her highly acclaimed Mid Point podcast, which boasts interviews with notable figures like Sir Chris Hoy, Claudia Winkleman, Krishnan Guru-Murthy, and Sophie Ellis-Bextor. (Image: Matt McNulty, Getty Images) Gabby will be back on our screens tonight at 7 p.m., presenting BBC One's coverage of the UEFA Women's Euro 2025 match between Switzerland and Norway.

Emma Raducanu's three-word retort to King Charles after his comment about her coaching
Emma Raducanu's three-word retort to King Charles after his comment about her coaching King Charles III has had the pleasure of meeting a number of sporting stars in his time on the throne - and he certainly isn't afraid to crack a joke Emma Raducanu is ready to take on the best of the best at Wimbledon (Image: ADRIAN DENNIS/AFP via Getty Images ) King Charles III once jokingly asked Emma Raducanu whether she "had found a coach yet" as he handed her a distinguished Royal accolade. Raducanu is competing in the women's singles at Wimbledon, where she hopes to secure her second-ever Grand Slam title, having previously won the US Open. She will face Markéta Vondroušová in the second round on Wednesday, following her straight-sets triumph over Mimi Xu on the opening day. The former US Open winner is eager to progress beyond the fourth round at the prestigious tournament, hoping to recapture that winning feeling. Among her supporters is likely to be King Charles III, who shared a memorable and light-hearted exchange with the tennis star not too long ago. Having ascended to the throne in 2022, the King met the then 20-year-old Raducanu as she was honoured with an MBE for her contributions to tennis. Article continues below She said: "I was like, 'That's good banter!,'" recalling her three-word response. Continuing, she said: "It was so funny, I was laughing because everyone was ripping me for not having a coach. I was like: 'The fact you know this, I feel honoured.'" Throughout her short tennis career, Raducanu has worked with coaches like Nigel Sears, Andrew Richardson, Torben Beltz, Dmitry Tursunov, Sebastian Sachs, and Nick Cavaday. The 22-year-old is currently teaming up with her former coach Cavaday and Mark Petchey at Wimbledon, as she prepares to vie for her second Grand Slam title. After winning her opening match on Monday, Raducanu was full of praise for coach Petchey, rating him "11 out of 10" for his support during her SW19 comeback. She added: "He's been everything the last few months for me. I've really enjoyed being around him. He's helped me so much on all fronts, tennis, off-court."
