Duo held in Tawau drug raids

By: Amir Anuar Text Size: TAWAU: Two suspected drug addicts, including a woman, were arrested in separate raids on two homes in Kalabakan district on Friday. The suspects, a 35-year-old local woman and a 46-year-old foreign man, were believed to be involved in drug abuse, said Tawau district police chief ACP Jasmin Hussin. He said the operation, carried out by the district's Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division, followed continuous intelligence gathering at the locations. 'The first arrest took place at about 2.40am at a house in Felda Umas, involving a woman and the seizure of about 0.09 grams of syabu,' he said on Saturday. The second raid, at a workers' quarters in Kalabakan around 4am, led to the arrest of the male suspect and the seizure of about 0.11 grams of syabu. Jasmin said both suspects tested positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine in initial urine screenings. 'We are still tracking down other suspects believed to be involved and are stepping up intelligence efforts to investigate the active drug distribution network in the area,' he said. Mastermind among 3 held as cops seize 145kg of syabu in drug bust
KUALA LUMPUR: Police have crippled a drug trafficking syndicate operating in the Klang Valley following the arrest of three men, including an Indonesian, in separate raids last week. The operation, which began on July 24, was led by the Narcotics Crime Investigation Department of the Kuala Lumpur police contingent headquarters. The police also uncovered a syabu storage facility worth over RM4.66 million in Puncak Jalil, Serdang. Acting Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad said the first raid took place at 5.40pm in the parking lot of a shopping mall in Kuchai Lama, where a 32-year-old local man was arrested. "Checks on the boot of the suspect's car uncovered 10 plastic packages containing 10.34kg of syabu," he said. Two other men, including the syndicate's ringleader — a 61-year-old Malaysian and a 34-year-old Indonesian - were later detained at the same location. Following the arrests, police conducted a follow-up raid at a terrace house in Seri Kembangan, where they seized another 122 packets of syabu weighing 135.34kg. "The total amount of drugs seized was 145.68kg, which could supply around 728,400 addicts. The estimated street value exceeds RM4.66 million," said Usuf at a press conference at the Kuala Lumpur contingent headquarters today. He said investigations revealed that the syndicate had been using a gated terrace house in Taman Puncak Jalil, Seri Kembangan, Selangor, as a storage location before distributing the drugs locally and abroad. "The group is believed to have been active since May. The two locals are suspected to be the masterminds and couriers of the operation. "The drugs were primarily meant for distribution in the Klang Valley, with some destined for abroad, including to Indonesia," he said. Further investigations are ongoing to identify the full extent of the syndicate's network and the role of the Indonesian suspect. "Initial urine tests showed that two of the three suspects tested positive for drugs. Background checks revealed that one of them is also wanted for previous drug-related offences. "The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the death penalty or life imprisonment and not less than 12 strokes of the cane upon conviction," he said. All three suspects have been remanded for six to seven days from July 25 to assist investigations.

(Facebook pics) PETALING JAYA: Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has issued fines to 41 unlicensed street photographers operating in the KLCC area as part of an enforcement operation over the weekend. The operation, codenamed 'Op Lens', was carried out with support from the police, immigration, national registration department, and federal territories department, targeting unlicensed individuals offering paid photography services in public spaces. DBKL said public spaces were shared property and must be used ethically, in an orderly manner, and in compliance with regulations. 'Unauthorised photography services are not only illegal but also pose safety risks to visitors,' it said in a Facebook post. 'Some of these activities take place on roads or pedestrian walkways, endangering both photographers and clients, and disrupting public movement.' DBKL also warned that repeat offenders risked having their equipment confiscated. It said enforcement would continue to ensure that public areas remain orderly and safe. The crackdown follows mounting complaints on social media from visitors who said they were misled or harassed by self-styled 'photographers' offering low-cost services that escalated into disputes. Cops probe ‘flogging' of Prime Minister effigy during Turun Anwar rally

PETALING JAYA: Police are probing the reported flogging of an effigy resembling Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim near Masjid Negara during the Turun Anwar rally last Saturday. Acting Kuala Lumpur police chief Usuf Jan Mohamad said the report on the incident was one of four received in relation to the rally at Dataran Merdeka, Bernama reported. He said the case had been referred to the classified crime investigation unit in Bukit Aman for investigation under Section 41 of the Sedition Act 1948, Section 504 of the Penal Code, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. Speaking at a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today, he said the other three reports were related to the use of drones. 'The three other reports related to drones have been forwarded to the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia for further action,' he said, adding that any misconduct by rally participants would be investigated by the police. About 18,000 people took part in the rally, according to police estimates, although the organisers, PAS Youth, claimed that more than 200,000 participants were present. Protesters had called for Anwar to step down as prime minister over the rising cost of living, among others. At an anti-corruption rally in Sabah last month, organised by several Universiti Malaysia Sabah students, protesters burned a caricature of the prime minister. The Gempur Rasuah Sabah 2.0 protest saw more than 100 people call for action over the Sabah water department scandal.
