Saplings were planted at various railway premises and surrounding areas. Senior railway officials, members of the Women Welfare Organisation, staff members, and volunteers actively participated in the plantation drives, said ECR's chief public relations officer (CPRO) Saraswati Chandra.
According to Danapur DRM Jayant Kumar Choudhary, the railway staff and passengers took a collective oath to eliminate the use of single-use plastic items.
The pledge was supported by the symbolic distribution of eco-friendly jute bags at major railway stations, including Patna, Danapur, Rajendra Nagar Terminal, and Patliputra Junction. The initiative aimed to encourage passengers to switch to sustainable alternatives in their daily lives, he said, adding that a 'Swachchata Rath' was also flagged off in Khagaul to create awareness among the people.
Adding a traditional touch to the occasion, a 'prabhat pheri' was organised in the railway colonies in Patna and Khagaul.
Participants, including scouts and guides, marched with banners and slogans through nearby neighbourhoods to raise awareness about the urgent need to protect and preserve the environment, he said, adding that the railways felicitated 'safai karmi' (cleaning staff) on the occasion.
"Through today's actions we aim to make environmental consciousness an everyday practice," the DRM said, adding that World Environment Day serves as a reminder of the planet's fragile ecosystems and the urgent need to take action.
In addition, the railways also observed 'International Level Crossing' Day at different places in the Danapur division with a message to people in general to cross level crossing gates cautiously and follow railway safety rules.

1 lakh neem trees in district: Ernakulam's two-year greening mission reaches milestone
KOCHI: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Saturday planted the 1,00,000th neem (aryaveppu) sapling on the campus of Rajagiri High School, Kalamassery, marking the culmination of a massive two-year-long tree-planting drive across Ernakulam district. The environmental campaign was launched on June 5, 2023 — World Environment Day — when Industries Minister P Rajeeve planted the first sapling, with the mission to plant 1 lakh neem saplings across the district. Spearheaded by Sriman Narayanan's 'Ente Gramam Gandhi Jeevitham Mission', based in Muppathadam, the initiative has now reached its green milestone. The final phase of the campaign saw the planting of the remaining 12,000 saplings in the past few weeks in various parts of the district, ensuring the target was met before the next Environment Day cycle. 'Ernakulam is one of the districts worst hit by air, water, and soil pollution. Neem, with its remarkable purifying and medicinal qualities, is an ideal choice to fight this environmental degradation,' said Sriman Narayanan, who leads the mission. Known for its immunity-boosting and pest-repelling properties, neem tree is also believed to have benefits in post-Covid health management. The organisers focused on densely populated urban colonies, where both human and ecological health need urgent attention. The saplings were sourced from nurseries in Tamil Nadu.
