Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren on Friday wrote a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah demanding that the Centre waive Rs 13,300 crore due in lieu of deployment of CRPF for carrying out anti-Naxal operations in the state.
If the state is forced to pay such a huge amount, it will adversely impact development schemes in Jharkhand, Soren said.
It is the joint responsibility of the state and central governments to root out extremism... I urge the central government to completely waive the pending dues of Rs 13,299.69 crore to be paid by the state government in lieu of the deputation of Central Reserve Police Force for conducting anti-Naxal operations in the state of Jharkhand, Soren wrote in the letter.
More than 400 police personnel were killed in anti-Naxal operations in the state as Jharkhand remains an extremist-hit state since its creation, he said.
I expect cooperation and a positive attitude from the Centre in waiving the dues under cooperative federalism, Soren said.

6 chip projects okayed; to generate 27,000 jobs

New Delhi: The government has approved six semiconductor manufacturing projects so far with a cumulative investment of around Rs 1,55,000 crore, which are expected to generate more than 27,000 direct job opportunities, the Parliament was informed on Wednesday. The government introduced the 'Semicon India Programme', with an outlay of Rs 76,000 crore for the development of the semiconductor and display manufacturing ecosystem in the country, Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, Jitin Prasada, told the Lok Sabha in a written reply. Semiconductor manufacturing is a highly specialised industry requiring a complex manufacturing process. Therefore, most of the jobs created in this industry are skilled jobs. Further, as the semiconductor industry is a foundational industry, these units are expected to have a cascading effect on employment generation in the other sectors and the supply chain down the line. 'Under the Design Linked Incentive (DLI) scheme, the fiscal support is provided to the approved startups and MSMEs. Out of 22 design companies approved under the scheme so far, 3 companies are in the state of Telangana,' the minister informed. Apart from the above, design infrastructure support has also been approved for 11 companies in Telangana. Moreover, under the Chips to Startup (C2S) programme, 22 institutes from Telangana are being supported with design tools, and 6 institutes are being provided financial support, Prasada said. Similarly, out of 22 design companies approved under the DLI scheme, so far, 3 companies are approved in Tamil Nadu. Design infrastructure support has also been approved for 6 companies in Tamil Nadu.

Supreme Court asks HC to hear Bhopal gas victims' claim of ‘misclassification' of illnesses on merits

The Supreme Court on Thursday (July 24, 2025) gave Bhopal gas disaster victims' rights groups liberty to approach the Madhya Pradesh High Court with their claim that survivors with lasting, severe injuries and illnesses were wrongly classified under 'temporary disablement' and 'minor injury' and under-compensated for years. A Bench of Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai and Justice Vinod Chandran asked the High Court to decide the case on its own merits. The apex court clarified that it had not ventured into the merits of the plea. Senior advocates Raju Ramachandran, Karuna Nundy and advocate Prasanna S. appeared for the victims' groups, including Bhopal Gas Peedit Mahila Purush Sangharsh Morcha. Bhopal Union Carbide Toxic Waste Safely Incinerated After 40 Years They had urged the top court to direct the Centre to identify these 'misclassified' victims and categorise them correctly under the provisions of the Bhopal Gas Leak Disaster (Processing of Claims) Act, 1985 so that they would receive adequate compensation to cover their medical treatment. The Centre had termed the Bhopal gas leak tragedy 'the world's largest industrial disaster'. Both the government and the Supreme Court had both agreed in the past that the loss of innocent lives in the aftermath of the fatal escape of Methyl Isocynate (MIC) gas from the Union Carbide India Limited (UCIL) plant in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, in the intervening night of December 2-3, 1984 was 'horrific' in every sense. 'A long history of litigation attempting to recover damages from the US-headquartered Union Carbide Corporation (now part of Dow Chemicals Corporation) ended with the dismissal by the Supreme Court of the curative petitions in July 2023 wherein it was made clear that any shortfall in compensation to be paid to the victims were a responsibility of the Union government,' the petition said. The organisations said they had data to show that survivors suffering from cancer and kidney failure as a result of toxic gas exposure were classified under the category of 'minor/temporary injury'. Bhopal gas tragedy: Supreme Court refuses to interfere with HC order on disposal of hazardous waste 'All these cases ought to have been added as a permanent disability category,' the groups had submitted.

Green drive: Karnataka to roll out 750 e-buses across 10 tier-2 cities

In a major shift towards e-mobility, 10 tier II cities of the state will soon get e-buses under the PM-eBus Sewa scheme These buses are given on a rental basis to the state-run transport corporations. Replying to an unstarred question from Rajya Sabha member Veerendra Heggade in the ongoing Parliament session, Union minister of state for housing and urban affairs, Tokhan Sahu, informed that five cities-Mysuru, Hubballi and Dharwad, Kalaburagi, Belagavi, and Mangaluru-will get 100 buses each. Five medium-sized cities, i.e., Shivamogga, Vijayapura, Ballari, Davanagere, and Tumakuru, will get 50 buses each. In his reply, the minister made it clear that as per the scheme guidelines, Udupi and Bengaluru cities are not eligible for the benefit. State transport minister Ramalinga Reddy said that under the scheme, buses are not sanctioned to the state. "Instead, these buses are given to private firms, and we take them on a rental basis," he said. Experts hope 750 buses to secondary cities will likely improve public transport infrastructure. "It is a good move to fight climate change," said Bhamy V Shenoy, an energy expert and civic activist from the city. "Hundred buses for a city like Mysuru is not enough. But it is a good beginning. E-buses are expected to attract young commuters who are now dependent upon private vehicles. KSRTC must utilise these buses to cater to unserved areas," he said.
