BMW to Replace Carbon Fiber with Flax-Based Alternative on New M Cars

BMW is preparing to ditch carbon fiber in favor of a new natural alternative made from flax-based composites.
The automaker partnered with Bcomp, a clean-technology company that has been helping BMW implement the material in its race cars since 2019.
BMW says the flax-based composite now passes the regulatory requirements of roof structures for vehicle homologation.
If you've inspected a BMW M product built within the last five-or-so years, you're probably aware that the Munich-based company enjoys implementing carbon fiber into its cars. And not in small amounts. So you might be shocked to learn that BMW is currently looking to make carbon fiber a thing of the past. But it's not without reason, because the company is planning to replace the magic composite with a new natural alternative made from a flax-based composite.
Goodbye, Carbon Fiber
Back in 2019, BMW began working with Bcomp, a clean-technology company that the German automaker owns stake in, to implement the flax-composite in its Formula E cars. After that proved successful, the automaker began replacing carbon-fiber-reinforced-plastic components on its M4 DTM and M4 GT4 cars.

Now, BMW has confirmed that the flax-based fiber has been "confirmed for series maturity," which, in common parlance, just means that it's ready for mass production. According to the company, replacing carbon-fiber pieces with the natural alternative will reduce the CO2e emissions of future BMW products.
Specifically, the company says replacing carbon-fiber roof panels with the flax-composite alternative reduces CO2e emissions by around 40 percent. There are also end-of-life benefits that could help BMW skirt the European Union's recently weighed proposal to add carbon fiber to its list of hazardous materials.

While BMW hasn't come forward with any head-to-head comparisons of how the new material sizes up to the tried-and-true carbon fiber, it's instead continuing to prove its effectiveness in racing. BMW's M4 GT4 EVO claims class victory over the weekend in the SP10 class at the 24 Hours of Nürburgring.

For those unaware, the Stop Killing Games movement was started by content creator Ross Scott after Ubisoft's The Crew was taken offline in 2024. Without any official servers, this always-online game that people purchased was rendered useless. This prompted Scott to begin a campaign that seeks to require publishers to transition their games into a playable state after ending support. Ways this could be done include adding an offline mode and giving players the ability to host private servers. The main goal of this initiative is to remove the ability for publishers to remotely disable games, thus making preservation impossible. The initiative also calls out the misleading nature of purchasing a good when, in reality, it is just a license with a hidden expiration date. Recommended Videos The petition, which just crossed the minimum 1 million signature threshold, will now be presented to the European Commission with the hopes of bringing enough attention to the matter to put new laws into place that will require publishers to offer some way to continue playing their games after ending official support. This comes just days before the July 31 deadline, but that still doesn't guarantee it will be effective. For one, the petition will be vetted to ensure there are no invalid signatures so more signatures are still being collected to hopefully account for that. Second, appearing before the European Commission doesn't necessarily mean any legislative action will be taken. Sadly, this movement is only possible in the EU right now, so those of us in America are unable to sign to show our support. However, this initiative's passing would still likely benefit us as well. The rationale here is that if publishers are required to offer an offline mode or private servers in the EU, there's no reason not to apply it worldwide. Considering how many games — even single-player ones — require an online connection today, this issue will only grow as time goes on. China's WH Group strikes pet-food acquisition in Europe with Pupil Foods

China's WH Group has struck an acquisition in the pet-food category in Europe by snapping up Poland-based Pupil Foods. The world's largest pork processor and supplier, which is listed in Hong Kong, said the deal was initiated by its Morliny Foods business unit in Europe through that company's Polish subsidiary Animex Foods. WH Group described the acquisition as a 'key step in Morliny Foods' strategy aimed at diversification of its portfolio and strengthening the presence in the dynamically growing pet-food market in Europe'. Financial terms of the transaction for Pupil Foods were not disclosed in a statement from the Chinese group. Pupil Foods produces wet and dry pet foods for cats and dogs supplied across Europe, including the UK, Germany, Hungary and Serbia. It also exports further afield to Asia and the Middle East. Its portfolio consists of branded (Pupil and Teo) and private-label products manufactured at two factories in Poland - Nowe Skalmierzyce for wet pet foods and Odolanów for the dry variety, according to Pupil Foods' website. Luis Cerdan, the CEO of pork and poultry supplier Morliny Foods, said: 'The acquisition of Pupil Foods is a natural extension of our growth strategy in Europe. 'Integrating Pupil Foods' expertise in pet nutrition with Morliny Foods' broad market reach will create significant value through vertical integration, operational synergies, and accelerated innovation.' WH Group bought Morliny Foods in 2004 through its US subsidiary Smithfield Foods, alongside another meat business Comtim Group, for a combined transaction value of $83m. Morliny Foods operates factories in Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Hungary, Spain, France and the UK. Brands include its namesake line, along with Pek, Krakus, Mecom and Berlinki ranging from hot dogs and sausages, deli and cooked meats, ham and bacon. Just Food has asked WH Group to confirm if the deal for Pupil Foods marks the Chinese company's, or its overseas subsidiaries, first entrance into the pet-food category. Pupil Food's founder Stanislaw Sulecki said: 'Morliny Foods' vision and resources will enable us to further develop our operations, invest in new products, and reach new foreign markets, while maintaining our dedication to quality. I look forward to Pupil Foods' future as part of the Morliny Foods family.' Meanwhile, WH Group, which span off part of its Smithfield Foods business with a US listing this year, reported its latest results in April. Revenue in the fiscal 2025 first quarter to 31 March rose 6% to $6.5bn. While packaged meat volumes overall were down 9.2%, pork volumes increased 4.4%. Operating profit climbed 19.4% to $598m, resulting in net profits to its owners rising 20.9% to $364m. For the previous full fiscal year, group revenue fell 1.1% to $25.9bn but operating profit increased 63% to $2.4bn. Profits to shareholders more than doubled to $1.5bn, from $606m a year earlier. The 2026 BMW M2 CS Just Decimated The Audi RS3's Nürburgring Record

There's been a bit of back and forth between Audi and BMW at the Nürburgring of late. In 2021, the 8Y Audi RS3 set a time around the Nordschleife of 7:40.748, earning it the title of the fastest compact car on the 'Ring. In 2023, the G87 BMW M2 stole the record with a time of 7:38.706 on the 12.944-mile route, so last year, the revised 2025 RS3 went back to the Nordschleife. It smashed the Bimmer's time by over five seconds, posting a time of 7:33.123, and the Bavarians simply couldn't let that slide. "You beat us by five seconds? Fine - we'll beat you by eight," said BMW. It took a special model to achieve, but the 2026 M2 CS has now reset the record at 7:25.5, achieving the first sub-7:30 time for a compact car. You can watch that astonishing lap at the bottom of this article. This lap time is some 13 seconds quicker than the one set by the normal M2 back in April 2023, but all that matters to BMW is that all its current CS models have dipped below 7:30, including the M4 CS, M3 CS (sedan, a time with the wagon has not been posted), and M4 CSL. For the record, the latter is the quickest BMW Group production car with a time of 7:18.137. With over 70 bends, changing camber profiles, and varying surfaces on the track, one cannot simply attribute the record to more power, but also to enhanced suspension and grippier rubber. Still, there's no doubt that a jump from 473 horsepower to 523 helped. The only drawback? All that power means the M2 CS isn't available with a manual transmission. Then again, no Audi is. The M2 CS is some 66 lbs lighter than the car upon which it is based, and it's got 129 horsepower more than the RS3. For Audi to reclaim the record would likely require a very focused and heavily upgraded car, and as a four-door hatch/sedan, the RS3 might be a tough sell with more track focus. Then again, it's not unlike Ingolstadt to celebrate the end of an era, and with the five-cylinder engine now only available in the RS3 after the TT RS departed, it's not unimaginable to think that a limited-run RS3 with no rear seats, a bigger turbo, and some specially developed rubber could be created to say goodbye to an icon. There are rumblings that the TT will return at some stage, and its smaller footprint could give the M2 CS something to worry about, but that will take a couple of years to come to fruition, if it ever does, so BMW's record will likely be safe for a long time to come.
