Datuk Yong dedicates HAWANA 2025 award to journalists
Yong, who is also Malaysian Press Institute (MPI) president, said the award is a collective honour for all those who have guided and supported him throughout his career in the nation's media industry, rather than a recognition of his contribution alone.
The former editor-in-chief and general manager of the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) also expressed hope that the national news agency would continue to uphold the highest standards and become a respected institution not only within Malaysia but globally.
'Bernama must be a respected news organisation, and its personnel must be more dynamic because ultimately, the staff are the backbone of the organisation.
'They need to work even harder to elevate Bernama's reputation. The production of credible and well-crafted stories is vital. We need to learn how to tell compelling stories to attract readers, viewers and listeners. That is what matters,' he said after receiving the award at the HAWANA 2025 highlight celebration at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL) here today.
The veteran newsman received the award from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, witnessed by Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil and Bernama Chairman Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai.
Also present were Bernama chief executive officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin, Bernama editor-in-chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj, who is also HAWANA 2025 project director, and the top management of local media companies.
Looking back on his career, Yong recalled serving as a business desk journalist at Bernama in 1991, during which he was specially selected to write an article aimed at stabilising the then-volatile stock market.
In 1998, he appeared in a prime-time live interview on Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) to speak on the implementation of currency control measures on the Malaysian Ringgit (RM).
On the RM30 million allocation announced by the Prime Minister for digital transformation initiatives, Yong said the funds could be used by media agencies to upgrade staff skills and strengthen their ability to face evolving industry challenges.
'This is a positive injection (of funds) that can enhance the capabilities of local media agencies through training or advanced equipment to improve news delivery and strengthen operational efficiency,' he said.
The HAWANA Award recognises and honours professional journalists, individuals or organisations that have made significant contributions not only in journalism but also in shaping public awareness through their work.
The inaugural HAWANA Award was posthumously conferred to the Father of Independence and Malaysia's first Prime Minister, the late Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj in 2018, followed by the Karangkraf Group (2022), renowned cartoonist Datuk Lat (Datuk Mohd Nor Khalid) in 2023 and late veteran journalist James Alexander Ritchie, widely known as James Ritchie, in 2024.

It eased versus the British pound to 5.7859/7941 from 5.7797/7866, and fell against the euro to 4.9748/9818 from 4.9566/9625 yesterday. However, it appreciated against the Japanese yen to 2.9316/9360 from 2.9351/9389. The local note was also traded lower against its ASEAN counterparts. It slipped against the Indonesian rupiah to 259.9/260.5 from 258.9/259.4, weakened against the Philippine peso to 7.49/7.51 from 7.45/7.46, shed vis-à-vis the Singapore dollar to 3.3167/3217 from 3.3015/3059, and declined against the Thai baht to 13.0233/0482 from 12.9363/9585 previously. - Bernama

Four bills to be tabled at State Assembly sitting
Hajiji chairing the Chief Minister's Department post-cabinet meeting at Menara Kinabalu on Wednesday. KOTA KINABALU (July 2): Four bills will be tabled during the two-day State Assembly sitting, beginning next Monday. The Chief Minister's Department will table two bills: the Forestry (Amendment) Bill 2025 and the Climate and Carbon Governance Bill 2025. The other two will be tabled by the Finance Ministry — the State Sales Tax (Amendment) Bill 2025 and the Supplementary Supply Bill 2025. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Hajiji Haji Noor disclosed this at the Chief Minister's Department post-cabinet meeting at Menara Kinabalu on Wednesday. The State Assembly sitting is expected to be the last before the assembly is dissolved to make way for the next state election. The current term expires in October. Meanwhile, Hajiji hoped public service personnel will continue to uphold the principles of professionalism, neutrality and integrity in carrying out their duties during this election year. 'We are facing the state elections this year. As the backbone of the State Government administration, civil servants must ensure that all administrative affairs and service delivery to the people are not disrupted and continue to run smoothly as usual. 'The efficiency and transparency of civil servants in facing this challenging period will reflect our commitment to continue supporting the democratic system and stability of the state administration,' he said at the meeting. Hajiji also urged all department heads to demonstrate strong commitment in carrying out their responsibilities. RON97, diesel prices down three sen in Peninsular Malaysia
KUALA LUMPUR: The retail prices of RON97 petrol and diesel in Peninsular Malaysia have been reduced by three sen, now set at RM3.18 and RM2.85 per litre respectively, for July 3 to 9. In a statement on Wednesday (July 2), the Finance Ministry said the retail price of RON95 remains unchanged at RM2.05 per litre, while the price of diesel in Sabah, Sarawak, and Labuan remains at RM2.15 per litre. The Finance Ministry said the price adjustments are based on the weekly retail pricing of petroleum products, using the Automatic Pricing Mechanism formula. "The government continues to monitor market trends and adjust the retail prices of RON97 and diesel in line with global oil price movements, while supporting price stability," the statement read. The Finance Ministry added that the government will also take appropriate measures to safeguard the welfare and well-being of the people. - Bernama
