Scots food reviewer left 'depressed' after visiting 'one of worst rated' McDonald's

Daily Record30-06-2025
Charlie Roscoe regularly visits establishments in Edinburgh and shares the experience on social media.
A popular food reviewer paid a visit to one of the lowest-rated McDonald's in Scotland, which he said left him "depressed".
Edinburgh-based Charlie Roscoe has amassed 25,000 followers on TikTok after he began visiting unsuspecting local eateries in his quest to find hidden gems.

He recently ventured out of the capital to Midlothian, to try what he claimed was the country's worst branch of McDonald's. The modern outlet at Hardengreen has a TripAdvisor rating of just 1.6.

Its Google rating is three stars from almost 1,300 reviews. Located between Bonnyrigg and Dalkeith, it is situated opposite a Tesco supermarket and newly-built Greggs and Starbucks, Edinburgh Live reports.
In his video, Charlie read out some of the negative reviews the restaurant has been hit with, including complaints about the presentation of burgers and claims they were selling mouldy chicken nuggets.
Not expecting much when he entered, he said he was "unpleasantly" surprised after watching a staff member wiping down tables, adding that it was "sparkling" inside.
He said: "First impressions - the 'worst McDonald's in the country' was looking in good shape. It is one of few fancy modern McDonald's. I placed my order on the fancy kiosk trying to buy items people say they get wrong.
"I then took myself upstairs where everything was clean. I even saw someone wiping down the tables in the flesh. Shoutout to this guy because the place was absolutely sparkling.

"I'm already unpleasantly surprised at how normal this maccies is. The place is spotless, it's clean. I wanted to sit down and have rats crawling all over me but let's wait and see what the food is like."

Charlie ordered a Big Mac meal, a Mayo Chicken and nine Chicken McNuggets and was immediately impressed with how warm the fries were and how well-presented his Big Mac was, which had previously attracted a slew of bad reviews.

He admitted he expected 'a swarm of locusts' to fly out when he opened his Big Mac box, but again was surprised at how it looked and tasted overall.
He continued: "I opened the nuggets next, expecting there to be one missing as a lot of people who left reviews said they forgot a nugget. But inside were nine, super crunchy, warm nuggies.
"And by the way this McDonald's gave me a receipt and had working sauce dispensers, making it a lot better than most McDonald's I've been to. The Big Mac was next and I just straightened it up a little before eating instead of writing a huge review about it.
"Honestly I was a bit depressed after this meal as I wanted it to be bad but honestly this was one of the better McDonald's I think I've ever been to. I think they must have upped their game after being announced as the worst in Scotland."

Tourist expects stunning panoramic view from his hotel window.. but leaves viewers speechless when he pulls back curtain

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A TOURIST has left people in stitches after revealing the unique view he has from his hotel window. With the school holidays now just right around the corner, many Brits will be about to jet off on well-earned holidays abroad. 2 Ben expected a lovely panoramic view from his window Credit: TikTok/@bben9450 2 He was gobsmacked by how small the window is Credit: TikTok/@bben9450 When most of us go away, we long for a gorgeous sea view, or to be able to see the rolling countryside out of our hotel window. However, one holidaymaker didn't get quite what he was expecting on a recent break. Brad Ben, from Dublin, recently took a trip to Galway, and spent his time there in a modern looking hotel room. Sharing a clip of the inside of his room on TikTok, Ben used the audio from the famous Jet 2 advert, narrated by Hollyoaks' Zoe Lister, and featuring Jess Glynne's iconic hit Hold My Hand. It has become a popular trend in recent weeks to use the audio alongside a holiday 'fail'. In the video, Ben can be seen strutting across his hotel room, before opening up his thick floor length curtains. Where you would expect to see a large window, showing panoramic views, there was a teeny tiny square one, reminiscent of a ship's porthole. "Appreciating those views", he joked. The view has left people in hysterics, racking up an astronomical 239 million views on the video sharing platform. In a second video, Ben showed viewers what he could see through the window, placing his camera right up to the glass to show the Irish countryside opposite his hotel. People are only just realising who does the voice over for viral Jet2 advert From a distance, it looks like the window is a small painting on the wall. "She's giving Van Gogh", Ben Joked. TikTok users flooded the comments section of the video, to share their disbelief at the view. One person said: "Are you in jail?" Holiday packing tips Jemma Solomon, aka The Label Lady has got 5 packing tips to help you get organised for your next holiday. 1. Write a list Think about all the essentials you need to take with you; suncream, medicine, a few games for the kids, beach towels, and write everything in one list, which you can tick off as you add it to your suitcase. Or for complete ease, try Google's AI app - Gemini - which will create a list for you and help you not over pack. 2. Involve your kids Jemma said: 'My girls are getting older, they're 11 and nine, and they enjoy helping to pack. So I send them a list, and say 'this is what you need' and they follow the list. 'And then I give them a rucksack each - and say to them 'you can have whatever you want in there as long as it's not liquid', and they can take that on the plane. And that's their 'home away from home' items.' 3. Try a hack or two She said: "I think they all work, but for different reasons - and you've just got to pick the right one for your trip. "Rolling your clothes is really good to stop your clothes from getting creases. And if you're trying to get a lot of items into your case, it's a space saver. 'Packing cubes are great - for example, I'm going on holiday with my three kids and we're all using the same suitcase for our clothes. "These handy compartments let you separate your clothes, toiletries and tech into designated cubes, maximising luggage space by keeping your items compressed and neatly stacked. "I love taking them abroad with the family and it means my kids can easily take charge of their own items once we've arrived." 4. Decant beauty products Do you really need to take full-size bottles of shampoo and conditioner with you? The beauty industry has evolved so much, you can now buy shampoo bars or sheets - which are much lighter and smaller. Or, if you'll be popping to the shops when you're abroad, consider buying some items when you arrive. 5. Get organised before you come home Jemma said: 'When you repack on holiday [before coming home], the trick is to separate clean from dirty clothes. 'Also pack it in some form of order - so lights, darks, colours for items that need washing, or if you wash your clothes by person in the household, piles for each person. "Then you can put it straight into the washing machine. Do it straight away, don't leave it." Another said: "They have a nerve to put a curtain over that." A third person exclaimed: "I was not expecting this one bit." A fourth added: "I dunno what I was expecting but it deffo wasn't that window."

Bus driver lists five annoying things passengers do – including one common habit

Snoopio is a bus driver in the capital with Arriva and has publicly aired passenger habits that annoy him, such as not having a pass ready before boarding the bus Taking public transport can sometimes prove to be a stressful experience. Bus drivers, particularly in bustling cities like Edinburgh and Glasgow, aim to complete their routes on time and enjoy hassle-free journeys. However, this isn't always the case. ‌ Sadly, not everyone is blessed with the same good manners as the majority of us, and rude passengers can ruin an otherwise perfectly fine day for all involved. But one bus driver has had enough - and hit out at the impolite, disrespectful and sometimes insulting people that board the buses. Snoopio, who drives for Arriva, has spoken up against rude people who use public transport, revealing his top five most annoying situations while transporting passengers on his routes. ‌ He took to TikTok to share a video outlining five passenger habits that get under his skin. ‌ Top of his list? The kind of people who dilly-dally and don't have their pass or ticket ready before they board. Snoopio pointed out that passengers waiting at a bus stop have ample time to prepare their pass. This slows down the process, meaning drivers aren't able to move onto the next stop as quickly. He said: 'You know when a passenger's standing up at the stop and they get on a bus and that's when they decide to look for their pass, like the Oyster? ‌ "That is annoying, like what were you waiting for all this time?' Next on his list is when passengers who have been sprinting for a bus don't appreciate how the driver has slowed down to allow them to catch up. Many people find themselves sprinting for a bus, especially if they're on a tight schedule. And while drivers don't always wait in these situations, those who do appreciate a simple 'thank you' from passengers who make it onto the bus. That makes it especially irksome, Snoopio says. ‌ He added: "You know when you see a passenger running, I'm like 'ah, I'll stop for them'. You wait for them for a good little while and they get on the bus and don't say thank you. What? "I'll open the door and say "you're welcome". Have some manners, you know? That's annoying." ‌ Another pet peeve is one that riles anyone on a bus up. Snoopio, who drives in London for Arriva, explains: 'Pressing the bus stop bell several times and no-one gets up for the stop. "You know how many times I could have been ahead of where I am but you got me stopping, opening doors, letting on ghosts?' He says it's a nuisance when no one disembarks, as this delays the journey. ‌ Another rude and disrespectful thing some passengers do is knock on the window when they want to be let on to the bus. Sometimes, the bus will slow down as it approaches a stop to take up the full stop and avoid edging into the main road. And while the usual way for passengers at a stop to signal to drivers that they want to board is by extending their arm, some take it took far. Snoopio said: "You know, like when you're just moving up a little bit closer, like just to fill out the whole bus stop and then passengers start knocking on the window? "Now I'm not stopping. Now I'm going. What are you doing? Why are you knocking?" Finally Snoopio hit out at would-be "heroes" who inform the driver that someone is rushing to catch the bus. Some even take it further by sticking their leg into the bus door to prevent the drivers from leaving without that person rushing. He said: "I can see. What are you trying to do, trying to play the hero? What for? For a little thank you? Go and sit down."

Holiday money mistake costing Scots hundreds of pounds this summer

Travellers should be cautious when choosing how to pay their bills whilst abroad. Travellers jetting off abroad this summer are reportedly unknowingly falling into a costly trap at restaurants, shops and ATMs whilst on holiday. ‌ According to Jessie Chambers, Travel Expert at Global Work & Travel, choosing to pay in pounds (GBP) instead of the local currency could be inflating holiday spending by as much as 10% per transaction - thanks to a little-known practice called Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC). ‌ She said: 'It feels familiar and safe to choose pounds, but it's one of the biggest travel money mistakes Brits make. You're letting the shop or ATM provider apply their own conversion rate – and it's almost always worse than your bank's. ‌ Dynamic Currency Conversion is when a foreign card machine offers to convert your bill into GBP on the spot. While it sounds convenient, this 'service' often comes with: Inflated exchange rates Hidden mark-ups (typically 6–10%) Additional fees layered on top A €100 meal in Spain could cost £84 when paid in local currency, but would actually £8 more when paid in GBP via DCC. Multiply that over a week-long trip with hotels, restaurants, and activities, and travellers could be losing £100–£250 without realising. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! The worst part? It's totally avoidable." Another thing to consider, according to Alastair Douglas, CEO at TotallyMoney, is which credit card to take - if at all - to make sure you're not being hit by hefty currency conversion charges. ‌ Alastair warned: 'Don't get burnt by bank charges this summer and take a fee-free card with you. Otherwise, if you pack the wrong one, you could find yourself paying £8.15 for £5 of cash when abroad.' Alastair also advises checking your providers flat fees. He added: "When using your card, remember that making multiple, smaller purchases or withdrawals can really add up. In which case, you might be better off withdrawing a larger amount of money once, and setting a daily budget.' Alastair also warned if you're in the UK and switching one foreign currency to another foreign currency, then it's likely that you'll be charged two sets of fees or commissions. One will be to convert your cash into pounds, and another from pounds into the new currency. So, you might be better off waiting until you reach your destination and exchanging there.
