Top Court Extends Vikas Yadav's Interim Bail By A Month In Nitish Katara Murder Case
The Supreme Court on Tuesday extended by four weeks the interim bail granted to Vikas Yadav, undergoing a 25-year jail term in the 2002 Nitish Katara murder case, to attend to his ailing mother.
A bench of Justices M M Sundresh and N Kotiswar Singh asked Yadav to approach the Delhi High Court for seeking remission in the case.
The top court has been extending interim bail to Yadav on medical grounds.
The Supreme Court on Tuesday extended by four weeks the interim bail granted to Vikas Yadav, undergoing a 25-year jail term in the 2002 Nitish Katara murder case, to attend to his ailing mother.
The AIIMS in its opinion said if the patient failed to respond to conservative management (physiotherapy and medications), then surgical decompression of the lumbar spinal canal was recommended.
The top court then extended the interim bail granted to him to look after his mother.
On April 24, the top court granted interim bail to Yadav to meet his ailing mother and directed that she be examined by a medical board of AIIMS doctors.
Imposing conditions, the top court directed the convict to remain confined to his house in Ghaziabad and not get in touch with the case's witnesses, including Katara's mother Neelam Katara.
The apex court granted him the relief subject to depositing a bail bond of Rs 1 lakh and a surety of the like amount.
Vikas is the son of Uttar Pradesh politician D P Yadav. His cousin Vishal Yadav was also punished for the kidnapping and murder of business executive Katara.
The duo was against Katara's alleged affair with Bharti Yadav, sister of Vikas, as they belonged to different castes.
Another co-convict Sukhdev Pehalwan was given a 20-year jail term without any remission benefit.
Earlier, the Delhi High Court, while upholding the life imprisonment awarded to Vikas and Vishal Yadav by the trial court, specified a 30-year sentence, without any remission, to both of them.
It had awarded a 25-year jail term to the third convict, Pehalwan.
The Delhi prisons administration had last year rejected Yadav's remission request after his conduct was found to be unsatisfactory.

Kochi: A local court granted bail to a couple from Kochi, hours after they were taken into custody by the Ernakulam Central Police for allegedly blackmailing and threatening an IT firm owner into giving them a substantial amount of money. The bail has been given based on the Supreme Court guidelines, and strict conditions have also been imposed. It was after her resignation that the couple decided to create a false case and started threatening the businessman that if he did not pay Rs 30 crore to Shweta, she would accuse him of being in an extramarital relationship with her and would also accuse him of sexual assault. Centring around this theme, the couple asked him and two other employees of the firm to meet them. At the meeting that took place last week, the couple threatened that if the businessman did not pay them Rs 30 crore, things would get out of hand and he would land in jail on charges of sexual assault. He was asked to transfer Rs 10 crore to them immediately and give two cheques of Rs 10 crore each. The hapless businessman transferred Rs 50,000 into their account and then prepared two cheques of Rs 10 crore each. However, later the businessman got in touch with the police and after a tactful operation by them, the couple was trapped and taken into custody. A search was conducted, and two cheques of Rs 10 crore each signed by the IT firm owner were found in their possession. Following this, the police got into motion and arrested the two. During the preliminary investigation, the couple confessed to the crime. Meanwhile, police are continuing the investigation to find out if more people are involved in the case.

Maharashtra: Ajit Pawar directs effective implementation of ‘Manhole to Machinehole' scheme
Mumbai: Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar asked the administration to effectively implement the 'Manhole to Machinehole' scheme in a serious bid to do away with the practice of manual scavenging. Under the scheme, drains, sewer lines, and septic tanks will be cleaned using mechanised equipment. The scheme includes procurement of cleaning machinery, modern vehicles, and emergency response sanitation units. Ajit Pawar, who chaired the meeting to discuss the issues concerning sanitation workers, said the scheme is being implemented by the urban development department with an approved funding of Rs 504 crore. He said that an additional 100 crore was sanctioned in the Monsoon Session of 2024–25 and disbursed to the department by March 31, 2025. Procurement of robotic units, cleaning equipment, and emergency vehicles has also begun. He directed that maintenance of these vehicles for three years and training of sanitation workers for operating them must be ensured by the respective agency. The meeting on Wednesday came days after Ajit Pawar had told the state assembly during the monsoon session that the government will implement a time bound programme to completely stop the manual scavenging and cleaning drains and severe lines across Maharashtra by replacing it by machines. He had also assured the House that the government will make available necessary funds. 'Under the Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Shram Safalya Awas Yojana, dwelling units are provided free of cost and on ownership basis to the eligible heirs of conservancy workers post their retirement or in the event of death while in service. At present, the benefit is extended only to sanitation workers who have completed 25 years or more of service,' said Ajit Pawar. He directed the Urban Development Department to prepare a proposal to reduce this service requirement from 25 years to 20 years and present it before the Cabinet. "The state government resolution issued based on the recommendations of the Lad-Page Committee must be implemented by all municipal corporations and councils at the earliest. Failure to comply will attract strict action," he warned. He further instructed that every municipal corporation and council must submit a detailed report to the Urban Development Department regarding the number of sanitation workers currently employed in their jurisdiction.

Over Rs 11 lakh crore in loans disbursed to women self-help groups by banks: Minister
New Delhi: Loans worth over Rs 11 lakh crore have been disbursed to women self-help groups (SHGs) through formal financial institutions under the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana–National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM), Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said on Wednesday. This milestone reflects the central government's strong commitment under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi towards inclusive rural development, financial empowerment of women, and fostering self-reliance at the village level, he added. Under the Ministry of Rural Development's DAY-NRLM, rural poor women across the country are strengthening their livelihoods through robust community institutions. Through SHGs, they are being provided collateral-free loans, interest subsidies, and other financial support, enabling them to start their own businesses and increase their incomes. A repayment rate of over 98 per cent clearly demonstrates the initiative's credibility, discipline, and efficient management, said Chouhan. Appreciating the banking community's support, Chouhan said that banking partners have played a remarkable role in turning the dreams of millions of rural women into reality. The tireless efforts of 'Bank Sakhis' have facilitated SHG-bank linkage and ensured timely loan repayment. He further said that the main contribution of this banking partnership is the provision of easy loans to SHGs under the priority sector lending, along with accessible banking services for SHG members through simplified processes. The initiative also promotes Aadhaar and mobile seeding of bank accounts and enhances financial literacy. The repayment systems are being strengthened in the country. 'Bank Sakhis' are increasingly assisting with transactions, loan applications, and documentations, as well as creating awareness about insurance, pensions, and other financial schemes. Moreover, the Community Based Repayment Mechanism (CBRM) is being fortified to ensure timely loan recovery under this significant programme. The central government initiatives like DAY-NRLM and 'Lakhpati Didi' are transforming the economic status of millions of women in rural India, he mentioned.
