Maddie's 9-1-1 Nightmare Isn't Over Yet — EP Teases the ‘Psychic Scars' She Still Needs to Overcome
Thursday's episode (ABC, 8/7c) finds Jennifer Love Hewitt's character struggling to return to work as a dispatcher for the first time since being kidnapped by Amber, a near-fatal ordeal neither she nor the audience will ever forget — thanks in part to the big ol' scar on Maddie's throat from when Amber slashed it.

'We're playing like five weeks or something has transpired [since the attack],' showrunner Tim Minear tells TVLine. 'That's stated explicitly in the next episode. Her hair is longer, it's a little bit different.' But the scar? 'That can't go away.'
Indeed, getting that scar reapplied is now going to be part of Hewitt's daily hair-and-makeup routine on set, just as it has been for Maddie's better half.
'I put a piece of rebar through Chimney's head [back in Season 1], and he's got a little scar,' Minear says. 'It was more prominent initially, but yeah, we've been applying that [on Kenneth Choi] for eight years.'
Lessening the appearance of Maddie's scar may become a storyline in the future, but for now, 'she's not talking so much about the physical scar yet,' Minear explains. 'It's more about the emotional scars, the psychic scars she's been left with.'
As revealed in the promo for Thursday's episode, appropriately titled 'Disconnected,' Maddie appears to suffer a panic attack while assisting a caller trapped in a smoky room, clutching her throat as she's seemingly unable to speak.

Of course, Maddie isn't the only one struggling this week. We also spend a considerable amount of time with Eddie in El Paso, where adjusting to his new life becomes complicated when 'Christopher discovers him in an unfamiliar situation,' per the official logline.

Also noteworthy? The entire cast is over 60—minus one woman who is 58. Per Reality Steve, "the fact that we got the women on Friday makes me believe that filming starts this week." He also notes that the show presumably decided not to recast Mel since "this would've made the news by now, or they would've come out and said they were recasting him." Looks like filming will be going down any moment now and we should know for sure about Mel then, so stay tuned...

Malcolm Jamal Warner Cause of Death: 'Cosby' Star Dies Tragically at 54
Malcolm-Jamal Warner, who came to fame as a star on The Cosby Show, has died tragically in Costa Rica. He was the beloved character Theo on the hit sitcom. How did he die? What was Malcolm-Jamal Warner's cause of death? According to ABC 6, Warner's "official cause of death was asphyxia." That account came from Costa Rican police, who told ABC that the actor "died near Cocles, a beach in Limon, Costa Rica." Costa Rican authorities told ABC that Warner's body was discovered on the afternoon of July 20 and that he "was caught by a high current in the water." According to People, Warner's death is considered a drowning. He was only 54 years old at the time of his death. TMZ also reported that Warner drowned, calling his death an "accidental drowning." The actor "was in Costa Rica on a family vacation and drowned while swimming," a source told People. News of the tragic death broke on July 21. From 1984 to 1992, Warner played Bill Cosby's only son, Theo Huxtable. Over the years, Warner had expressed pride in the sitcom. "I know I can speak for all the cast when I say The Cosby Show is something that we are all still very proud of," he said to People in 2023. Although it's being described by People's source as a family vacation, it's not clear who was along on the trip when Warner died. According to TMZ, he is survived by a wife and daughter, although he kept their identities private. Warner had more than 700,000 followers on Instagram. Warner previously dated Southland actress Regina King. According to US Weekly, they broke up in 2013. Stephen Colbert's late-night show was recently canceled by CBS, at a time when traditional media is ... More in flux. Stephen Colbert's recent dismissal from CBS—his 'Late Show' will end its run next May—has raised a lot of questions about whether the move is politically or financially motivated. There may never be a satisfactory answer, but it has become increasingly apparent in the several days since the decision was made that a number of other players stand to benefit from the new development. Change has been afoot in the late-night landscape. That has opened the doors for other media to move in, pulling people away from the Big Three networks and toward other forms of entertainment. While Jimmy Kimmel at ABC and Jimmy Fallon at NBC remain on the air (for now), the sea change will continue. Here's a look at who stands to benefit from the decline in late-night competition. 1. Video Podcasts Will See A Boost After Stephen Colbert Leaves This one is easy to predict. Video podcasts, or audio shows that include a video element, have experienced a huge surge in viewership recently. A Cumulus Media and Signal Hill Insights survey found that 75% of podcast listeners play videos vs. 25% who only use audio. Some viewers report minimizing the screen, but interestingly, there's no difference between younger and older consumers in this behavior. Those with video options include many longform podcasts that last for two-plus hours, as hosts meander through interviews or share anecdotes that actually have the feel of a traditional late-night program. These podcasts could certainly benefit from less competition after 11 p.m. If you start a video podcast at 9:30, you may not even be finished by midnight—and they are the perfect thing to have on in the background while getting ready for bed. 2. Stephen Colbert's Exit Will Lift Streamers Streaming services have become the hot programmers in recent years. Less broadcast competition likely means more people binging Squid Game, Love Island or whatever current hit Netflix, AppleTV+ or Amazon Prime show is streaming at the moment. 3. Traditional News Organizations Could Get A Stephen Colbert Bump Right now it seems like every five minutes brings another significant breaking news headline. Indeed, that has led to huge viewership for cable news networks, which provide analysis and break new stories. One less option for late-night viewing could mean more people looking for news during late-night hours, turning to TV or online channels. Traditional news orgs have a large presence on social media, and that, too, could expand—a recent World Economic Forum report found that 34% of U.S. residents now list social media as their main source of news. 4. Stephen Colbert's Exit Could Help Progressive Entertainment Outlets It is probably not surprising that Colbert's audience leans liberal—anyone who has listened to his monologue knows that while he criticizes both parties, his politics lean left. He also rose to fame by satirizing conservative firebrand talk show hosts, which won him few friends on the right. And a YouGov analysis found that more than half of Colbert's audience leaned left. With one less liberal voice on the airwaves, viewers may turn to other places for that type of commentary. Whether the Stephen Colbert dismissal means more listeners for MediasTouch podcasts or late-night readers of the Bulwark Substack remains to be seen.
