CMRS completes inspection of Phase-1 of Mumbai Metro Lines 2B, 9. Commercial operations expected by the end of this year
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), which is the implementing agency for both metro lines, said the safety inspection was an important milestone before commencing passenger services on the two sections.
'After the inspection, the CMRS will report a checklist of compliance based on observations. A final inspection will be organised after making the necessary corrections before opening for the public, likely by the end of this year. Approval for opening can only be given after this last inspection to commence commercial operations on these lines,' a source told The Indian Express.
On Friday, senior railway officials inspected overhead electric gear, signalling and communication systems, track geometry, and station facilities. The review also encompassed civil engineering features such as platform structures, emergency response systems, and passenger safety provisions.
These inspections ensure that safety standards are met before new metro lines start commercial services. Once all the requirements are fulfilled and the safety certificate is issued by CMRS, the lines will be cleared for opening.
Metro Line 2B Phase 1 covers a stretch of 5.39 kilometres and includes five stations between Mandale and Diamond Garden. This line is part of a larger corridor connecting DN Nagar to Mandale in the eastern suburbs.
On the other hand, Phase 1 of Metro Line 9 is 4.4 kilometres long with four stations starting from Dahisar (East) to Kashigaon. The line is being constructed as an extension of Metro Line 7 from Dahisar East to Mira Bhayandar and is likely to enhance connectivity in the western suburbs.

Deharji dam in Maharashtra's Palghar district achieves major milestone
Palghar: Deherji Dam, a crucial regional water infrastructure initiative in Palghar district, has achieved a major milestone as the reservoir water level rose to Reduced Level of 90.00 meters, resulting in an overflow discharge of 109.14 Mcum/sec at the spillway, marking the first live impoundment at the site and demonstrating both operational readiness and structural integrity of the dam. The Deharji dam, which is being financed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), is located on the Deharji River, a tributary of the Vaitarna River, near Suksale village, Taluka Vikramgad, District Palghar. The project comprises an earthen and masonry dam and is being executed by Konkan Irrigation Development Corporation (KIDC). On 22nd June 2025 at 3:30 PM, following sustained monsoonal rainfall in the Vikramgad region, the Deharji Dam achieved partial water storage of 5.147 million cubic meters (Mcum) — equivalent to 5% of its total designed capacity of 95.60 Mcum. This milestone signifies the ongoing success of the project's phased implementation and reflects MMRDA's commitment to water sustainability, equitable regional growth, and climate-resilient infrastructure, said its press release. MMRDA is currently preparing a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for a comprehensive bulk drinking water supply scheme, enabling equitable and sustainable water access across urban and semi-rural parts of the region. On this occasion, the Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that, "The Deharji Project is a testament to the government's unwavering commitment to building a water secure and climate-resilient Maharashtra. This milestone reflects the power of collaborative governance and long term planning that will directly benefit the people of Palghar and surrounding regions."

Palghar's Deharji dam starts storage of water, achieves first live impoundment
The Deharji dam in Palghar district has registered its first partial storage of water. The dam achieved a live impoundment with water level reaching the Reduced Level (RL) of 90 metres, or 5 per cent of the dam's planned storage capacity, on Sunday. Sanjay Mukherjee, Metropolitan Commissioner, Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), said, 'Achieving 5 per cent live storage and overflow at Reduced Level 90 m marks a major engineering and planning milestone in the Deharji Medium Project… clearly demonstrating the dam's structural readiness and hydrological functionality.' 'The project will not only meet the rising water demands of Vasai-Virar and Palghar, but also stand as a benchmark for sustainable and scalable water infrastructure development across the state,' he added. The dam is being built by the Konkan Irrigation Development Corporation (KIDC) with funding support from MMRDA on the Deharji River near Suksale village in Palghar district. As of May 2025, approximately 80 per cent of the total construction was complete. The excavation for the dam began in May 2022, and it was concretised in November 2022. The dam has a spillway with four radial gates, and the available storage upon completion will be 93.22 million cubic metres (Mcum). Out of the total estimated cost of Rs 2,599.15 crore, MMRDA has invested Rs 1,689.42 crore so far. This figure also encompasses Rs 364.82 crore for land acquisition and rehabilitation. According to MMRDA, private land involving a total area of 238 hectares is being acquired, and 269 families residing in Khuled, Sakhre, and Jambe villages are being rehabilitated under the jurisdiction of the Palghar District Collectorate. Currently, the stage 2 forest clearance for 445.29 hectares has been issued by the Ministry of Environment and Forests. After being fully commissioned, the dam will provide 190 million litres per day (MLD) to Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation, 50 MLD to City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) for the Palghar area, and 15 MLD to villages along the alignment. MMRDA is also drafting a detailed project report (DPR) for a regional bulk drinking water supply scheme on the basis of the Deharji reservoir. The construction of the dam is estimated to be complete by the end of 2027.
