Tom Cruise and Dolly Parton among stars set to receive honorary Oscars
Cruise, choreographer Debbie Allen and Do The Right Thing production designer Wynn Thomas have all been selected to receive honorary Oscar statuettes at the annual Governors Awards, the film academy said.
Dolly Parton will also be recognised with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award for her decades-long charitable work in literacy and education.
'This year's Governors Awards will celebrate four legendary individuals whose extraordinary careers and commitment to our filmmaking community continue to leave a lasting impact,' Academy president Janet Yang said in a statement.
Most recipients of the prize historically have not yet won a competitive Oscar themselves.
Cruise, 62, has been nominated four times, twice for best actor in Born on the Fourth of July and Jerry Maguire, once for supporting actor in Magnolia and once for best picture with Top Gun: Maverick.
He has also championed theatrical moviegoing and big-scale Hollywood production through the coronavirus pandemic.
Ms Yang spotlighted Cruise's 'incredible commitment to our filmmaking community, to the theatrical experience, and to the stunts community'
Parton has been nominated twice for best original song, for 9 to 5 and, in 2006, Travelin' Thru from the film Transamerica.
But her honour celebrates her humanitarian efforts over the years, through organisations like the Dollywood Foundation and the literary programme Dolly Parton's Imagination Library.
Ms Yang said Parton 'exemplifies the spirit' of the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award.
The awards will be handed out during an untelevised ceremony on November 16 at the Ray Dolby Ballroom in Los Angeles.
Last year's recipients included the late Quincy Jones, Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson, filmmaker Richard Curtis and casting director Juliet Taylor.
Recipients of the prizes, which honour lifetime achievement, contributions to the state of motion picture arts and sciences and service to the academy are selected by the film academy's board of governors.

Disney Dream cruise ship passengers recall the horror sounds they heard when little girl fell overboard
Passengers who were aboard the Disney Dream cruise ship when a little girl fell overboard from the fourth deck of the ship into the open ocean have told of the awful sounds they heard as the dramatic incident unfolded. 'There was some kind of commotion,' recalled one passenger who saw the entire rescue take place and who filmed it and posted it to TikTok, under the username Chandler Sphynx. 'Then there this awful scream from what I assume is the mother, and then this massive splash,' she told People. 'It sounded like hitting pavement, nothing like if you jump into a pool. It was so loud.' The emergency code - 'MOB port side,' for Man Overboard then boomed across the ship's loudspeakers, sending passengers racing to the railings to see what had happened. Witnesses say the little girl plunged from the fourth deck of the ship into the Atlantic, followed moments later by her father, who jumped in to try to save her. 'I didn't think they'd film them. The splash when he went in was SO loud,' Chandler wrote online. The drama unfolded on Sunday morning as the 130,000-ton vessel made its way back to Fort Lauderdale from Disney's Lookout Cay at around 11:15am. Within minutes, Disney's crew launched a bright yellow rescue vessel, with four crew members rushing toward the father and daughter struggling to stay afloat in the choppy Atlantic waters. Video showed the pair floating in the ocean as several flotation devices including life jackets and rings were thrown overboard. Cheers erupted from passengers watching on balconies as the rescue team pulled the two from the sea after about 20 minutes. Disney Cruise Line confirmed in a statement that both guests were returned to the ship safely and praised the quick action of the crew. 'The crew aboard the Disney Dream swiftly rescued two guests from the water,' it read. 'We commend our crew members for their exceptional skills and prompt actions, which ensured the safe return of both guests to the ship within minutes.' The captain addressed passengers afterward, confirming the rescue and reminding guests to follow safety protocols for the remainder of the trip. Passengers were left shaken by the ordeal, which happened as the Disney Dream was between Nassau and Grand Bahama Island. Chandler, who watched with her own nine-year-old daughter, told People she feared the worst as she saw the rescue efforts unfold. 'I had to tell my daughter they were probably gone because they usually can't find people who fall,' she said. 'I didn't think they'd find them.' Incredibly, the father managed to keep his daughter's head above water while the ship maneuvered to help and the rescue boat was launched. The ship, with a top speed of 25mph, was still moving at sea, adding to the drama. It left the father and daughter some distance away from the cruise ship by the time rescuers were able to reach them. The pair were finally lifted from the water at about 11:47am, according to witnesses. Social media videos showed the dramatic moment they were brought aboard the rescue boat, with a wave of applause breaking out among relieved guests. 'It was so intense to watch,' recalled one passenger, Janice Martin-Asuque, in a Facebook post. 'Didn't even know a cruise ship could do a 180 degree turn that quick,' added fellow passenger Nick Young. The terrifying moment unfolded aboard the Disney Dream as the ship was sailing back to Fort Lauderdale from the Bahamas (file photo) Questions remain about how the child managed to fall from an area with protective plexiglass barriers. Deck 4, where the fall occurred, includes a jogging track and viewing areas that are usually considered secure. The Disney Dream entered service in 2010 and underwent a major refurbishment last year with strong safety protocols. Disney officials say they will also review security footage to try and understand what went wrong and prevent something similar from happening in the future.

Charlize Theron leads stars slamming billionaire Jeff Bezos' 'gross' wedding
Charlize Theron and Rosie O'Donnell were some of the huge stars criticising Jeff Bezos' recent lavish wedding to Lauren Sanchez Charlize Theron was one of the many big names that took issue with Amazon founder Jeff Bezos' lavish wedding to Lauren Sanchez in Venice last week. The billionaire and his new wife took three days out of their busy schedule to celebrate their wedding, which is believed to have cost close to £40million. While the couple celebrated their wedding, protestors gathered in Venice at Santa Lucia train station armed with banners that read "If you can rent Venice for your wedding, you can pay more tax." The demonstration is believed to have been organised by the No Space For Bezos group. A few members of the group were seen laden with Amazon boxes that had the words "ordered, shipped, delivered, rejected" written on them. The likes of Leonardo DiCaprio, Oprah Winfrey and the Kardashians were at the celebrations. Not only did people on social media criticise the wedding, so did Hollywood celebrities like Charlize, Rosie O'Donnell and more. Charlize spoke about the nuptials while at the fifth annual block party for her charity, Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project and said she was okay with not getting an invitation. 'I think we might be the only people who did not get an invite to the Bezos wedding, but that's okay because they suck and we're cool,' the Oscar winner said. She went on to thanks people for coming to her charity event, "especially when the world feels like it's burning because it is.' "Here in Los Angeles, in the US and across the globe, we're moving backwards fast,' Charlize continued. "Immigration policy has destroyed the lives of families, not criminals; women's rights are becoming less and less every day; queer and trans lives are increasingly being erased; and gender-based violence is on the rise. "This isn't just policy, it's personal.' She ended her speech with three words aimed at Jeff: "Yeah, f**k them.' Rosie O'Donnell also criticised Jeff in the form of a poem shared on her Substack. 'It turned my stomach / Seeing all these billionaires / Gathering in the gross excess of it all / The show of it,' she wrote. 'Is Oprah friends with Jeff Bezos / Really - how is that possible / He treats his employees with disdain / By any metric he is not a nice man.' She then took aim at Lauren before hyping up his ex-wife MacKenzie Scott. "And his fake fem bot wife / Who looks like that / Why would he choose her / After the salt of the earth Mackenzie.' Tony nominee also praised MacKenzie as she noted the amount of money Jeff's ex-wife gave to charity. "How awesome is MacKenzie Scott! (Jeff Bezos's first wife & mother of his 4 children). "As of mid-December 2024, she had given a total of $19.3 billion to over 1600 charitable organizations."
