Emmerdale actor leaves fans in 'bits' as he breaks down at Soap Awards

Daily Record06-06-2025
Fans watching the British Soap Awards on TV spotted the emotional moment.
Emmerdale fans were left emotional whilst watching the British Soap Awards as long-time cast member Jeff Hordley, who plays Cain Dingle, broke down in tears during a powerful tribute. The glittering took place at London's Hackney Empire on Saturday (May 31) but aired on TV on Thursday night.
On the evening a Memorial section was included in the ceremony to honour late soap icons who are sadly no longer with us. Among the stars who were remembered were Meg Johnson, Kenneth Cope, Anita Carey, and finally Emmerdale legend Steve Halliwell, who played Zak Dingle, writes The Mirror.
Steve, who passed away in December 2023 at the age of 77, played the much-loved patriarch of the Dingle family for almost thirty years.
The star first appeared in the ITV soap in 1994, and then went on to be featured in more than 2,400 episodes of Emmerdale. His tribute featured a moving montage of his work, which was accompanied by a live piano instrumental.
As Halliwell's final clip played, cameras panned to Jeff Hordley, who plays Zak's son in the soap. The actor was visibly emotional and looked as if he was wiping away tears from his eyes, which prompted a heartfelt reaction from fans on social media.
One viewer wrote: "Aww, you could see at the end there seeing Steve affected Jeff." Another affected fan added: "Broke me that Steve Halliwell with Jeff Hordley."
Steve Halliwell passed away peacefully surrounded by his loved ones, according to a statement released by his family in 2023.
They said: "He went to sleep, peacefully with his loved ones around him. He was making us laugh to the end, the most amazing father and grandfather you could ever wish for."
ITV also released a touching tribute at the time, saying: "Steve will forever be synonymous with Emmerdale. The proud defender and head of the Dingle family. Heart and humour in all he did, it has been and always will be impossible not to smile when you think of him."
Aside from Emmerdale, Halliwell also appeared in popular shows including Coronation Street, Heartbeat, All Creatures Great and Small, and Cracker. However, it was his portrayal of farmer Zak Dingle that he is primarily remembered for.
He previously opened up about his family's financial hardships during his childhood, admitting that his mum couldn't even afford to buy him a bacon sandwich.
Steve shared: "When I first went on this walk there was a small café in the woods known as Nab's Wife (a corruption of the area originally known as Nab's Wharfe), where you could get a refreshing cup of tea and a Mars bar. You could also get a bacon butty, but we never had enough money for such 'luxuries'. On one occasion I persuaded mum to give Clive and me enough money for a bacon butty each, but when we got to the café it was all boarded up and, sadly, never reopened."
He was homeless and even imprisoned for "wandering" under the Vagrancy Act early on in his adult life before he went on to find solace in acting and made a name for himself as the formidable head of the Dingle family.

Emmerdale fans beg for Dawn Fletcher to exit ITV show

These opinions were expressed about Dawn Fletcher, who has been involved with the programme since April 2018. Played by Olivia Bromley, she is the estranged wife of Billy Fletcher and mother of Lucas Taylor and Evan Fletcher. Alongside that, she is the special guardian of Lucas' half-sister, Clemmie Reed. A post shared by Emmerdale (@emmerdale) She has been involved in some big storylines, including recently having an affair with Joe Tate, but viewers have seemingly grown tired of her. A post was made on the r/Emmerdale Reddit page, with the caption: "OH MY GOD WRITE DAWN OUT PLEASE!!!!!" The user added: "That's it really. Just that. Nothing more," with plenty of people agreeing with the sentiment. Plenty of Emmerdale viewers have found the character to be very unlikeable of late, and are keen for her to move on from the show. One person said: "God, she is so unbearable. And her 'I'm just looking out for the kids' rubbish should be her new catchphrase from now on. "Her logic makes 0 sense. If she really is looking out for the kids, like Billy said earlier, she'd leave Joe without a second thought. "I actually wonder if we're meant to like Dawn or not at this point. I actually don't know anymore." Another shared a similar view, commenting: "Billy was right to question whether or not she cares about her kids! "Clemmie was terrified because of Joe, even to the point of calling social services to get away from him! but that doesn't stop Dawn lusting after him! Unbelievable!" A third posted: "I skip EVERY SCENE WITH DAWN. Do not understand why she is on this show still....." Some were making theories to understand the logic behind the character's actions. Emmerdale's Bear Wolf to exit ITV soap amid mystery plot

Bear Wolf, played by former Hollywood actor Joshua Richards, will leave the village after six years. The loveable rogue is father to longstanding villager Paddy Kirk, and in recent months the pair have struggled in their relationship. Now, an early release of today's (July 1) episode has confirmed that the character is leaving the Dales. According to The Mirror, soap bosses had confirmed a departure would be on the cards temporarily as part of the "mystery" new storyline. Bear and Paddy come to blows in Emmerdale. (Image: Emmerdale)It comes after fans were left upset after last night's episode (June 30) where Bear lashed out at Paddy after helping him following a harrowing dog attack. Fans react to Bear's behaviour Recently, Paddy was seen confiding in Gabby Thomas and Marlon Dingle that he was worried his dad may have dementia. And soap fans think it may be health-related, too. Taking to X, one said: 'What is up with Bear? 'I think brain tumour or similar that's why wants to go away for a couple of months?' Another said: 'Bear seems to have very aggressive mood swings! The way he spoke to Paddy just now was vile.' While a third added: 'Seriously what is wrong is with Bear?? #Emmerdale 'And Bear has probably sent Paddy's mental health back to square one after saying that.' It is believed that Bear is off to stay with a friend in Ireland, as viewers will see tonight (July 1) how the storyline unfolds between the warring father and son. Joshua Richards weight loss Over the past two years, fans will have seen that Joshua, who plays Bear, has shed four stone in weight and reversed his Type 2 diabetes - going from 17 and a half stone to 13 and half stone. "My health wasn't too good. And I was tucking into all the wrong meals from Emmerdale catering like lasagne and chips," he told The Mirror last month. Recommended reading: ‌But with the help of his wife, Sarah, who he has been married to for more than 30 years, Joshua made positive changes to his diet. He explained: "We read a book by Dr Meghan Rossi called Eat More Live Well - and that really helped me lose the weight. "I don't exercise, because I have a bad back, so it's all through diet.' Emmerdale will air tonight (July 1) on ITV1 at the earlier time of 7pm.
