Renault posts first-half loss of 11.2 billion euros

CNAa day ago
PARIS :Renault reported a first-half net loss attributable to the group of 11.19 billion euros ($12.78 billion) on Thursday, including a one-off 9.3 billion euros from writing down its investment in partner Nissan flagged earlier this month.
Revenues at the French car maker came in at 27.6 billion euros, up 2.5 per cent compared with a year earlier, helped by several new product launches, though its operating margin fell 2.1 per centage points to 6 per cent.
Renault lowered its annual forecast earlier this month after market conditions deteriorated, particularly in the commercial vehicle market.
The group, whose sales volume growth slowed to 1.3 per cent in the first half, now expects an operating margin of around 6.5 per cent in 2025, compared with at least 7 per cent previously targeted, and free cash flow of between 1.0 billion and 1.5 billion euros, compared with at least 2 billion previously anticipated.
"Our first-half results, in a challenging market, were not aligned with our initial ambitions," said Francois Provost, appointed new CEO of the group late on Wednesday.
"Nevertheless, Renault Group's profitability remains a reference in our industry, and we are determined to maintain this standard," he added in a statement.
Excluding the impact related to Nissan, its net income attributable to the group reached 461 million euros.

Singapore's Temasek ups stake in Italian fashion group Ermenegildo Zegna to 10%

SINGAPORE: Singapore's Temasek has increased its stake in Ermenegildo Zegna Group to 10 per cent, the state investment firm said on Friday (Aug 1). The investment underscores the company's commitment to support leading European companies and family businesses with strong track records and global potential, said Temasek. It added that the Italian company successfully established itself in the high-end luxury segment and "presents significant long-term value creation opportunities across each brand". "Leveraging our experience in the luxury sector and deep knowledge of the Asian market, we're looking forward to partnering the group on its growth journey and global expansion," said Temasek. Under the deal which was expected to close by Jul 30, Temasek will purchase 14.1 million Zegna treasury shares at US$8.95 each for US$126.4 million, the companies said in a statement. Added to the 12.7 million shares it previously acquired on the open market, that brings Temasek's total stake to 10 per cent. "We look forward to being a thoughtful, long-term partner to the Zegna family and management team, empowering them to execute on their growth strategy and supporting their vision to elevate their iconic brands and global footprint," said Nagi Hamiyeh, Temasek's head of Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Mr Hamiyeh is expected to join Zegna's board as a non-executive director at the fashion house's next annual general meeting in June 2026, according to the statement. "FERTILE GROUND" Temasek is exploring investment opportunities in Europe, where volatility resulting from US President Donald Trump's global trade war has made some companies more attractive on valuation grounds. One person familiar with the transaction told Reuters that Temasek saw "fertile ground" in Zegna, which is increasingly open to international investors. Top-tier luxury consumers, those spending over €50,000 (US$57,660) annually, continue to spend despite global economic uncertainty. Though less than 1 per cent of the market, they account for 23 per cent of industry value, according to a report from the Boston Consulting Group. Their spending has remained steady even as aspirational buyers pull back. Proceeds from the transaction will be used to strengthen Zegna's balance sheet and support expansion into new markets, particularly in Asia, where Temasek's regional expertise is expected to play an important role, the statement read.

Piastri accepts F1 title chase looks like a two-horse race

BUDAPEST :Formula One championship leader Oscar Piastri accepted on Thursday that the title race was now effectively between him and McLaren teammate Lando Norris. The Australian leads Norris by 16 points ahead of this weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix, the last race before the sport's August break. Red Bull's four-times champion Max Verstappen is third overall, a hefty 81 points off the lead with 11 races remaining - a seemingly insurmountable margin given McLaren's current dominance. "I suppose so," Piastri told reporters when asked if it was now a two-horse race. Previously he and Norris, as well as McLaren bosses, have said it was too early to talk of such domination but the evidence is becoming hard to play down now. "Every weekend now, or the last few weekends anyway, it has been Lando and I. I expect our competition to still be strong and put up a good fight, especially at certain tracks through the rest of the year," said Piastri. "Whether that comes from Max or Ferrari or Mercedes or someone else, we never really know. I'm not too concerned about what happens in that. I'm just trying to win each race and extend the lead." Piastri took his first win in Formula One at the Hungaroring last year, while Norris was on pole. McLaren have had six one-two finishes in 13 races, with Piastri winning six times so far and Norris four. Verstappen has had two victories. The team have scored 516 points and are already a mighty 268 points clear of second-placed Ferrari. "Hungary has been historically a good track for us as a team, certainly the two years I've been with the team. I expect us to be strong again this weekend," said Piastri. The 24-year-old said he had full confidence in himself to come out on top by the end of the year. "Not every weekend has been perfect, but there's not many weekends in my whole life that have been perfect," he said. "Just trying to put together a solid, consistent year is ultimately going to be important. The pace in the last few weekends, especially Spa, I've been very confident in and very proud of.
