Majority of Pinoys back rejoining the ICC —OCTA survey
Majority of Filipinos are in favor of the Philippines rejoining the International Criminal Court (ICC), according to the results of an OCTA Research survey released on Monday.
The Tugon ng Masa nationwide survey, conducted from April 20 to 24, showed that 57% of Filipinos want the country to rejoin the ICC while 37% are opposed to the move, and 6% remain undecided.
Those who expressed support for rejoining the ICC was strong in most regions of the country. The survey results indicated that in Metro Manila, Balance Luzon, and the Visayas, at least 60% of respondents backed the move.
However, Mindanao was an exception—with only 30% in favor of rejoining the ICC and 66% rejecting it, the highest rate of opposition recorded across regions.
Across socioeconomic classes and age groups, support remains relatively consistent with at least half of the respondents in each category favoring rejoining, according to the survey.
Further, opposition by class ranges from 34% to 42%, with the highest levels in Class E. By age, opposition spans 32% to 44%, with at least 40% of adults aged 18–24, 35–44, and 45–54 not in favor of rejoining the ICC.
A total of 1,200 male and female respondents aged 18 and above were interviewed face-to-face for the study.
The survey has a margin of error of ±3 % at a 95% confidence level. Subnational estimates for the geographic areas covered in the survey have the following margins of error at a 95% confidence level: ±6% for Metro Manila, Balance Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.
Respondents were shown the following statement before they were asked of their stand: The International Criminal Court (ICC) is a global institution dedicated to upholding justice and protecting human rights by holding individuals accountable for the most serious crimes, including genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and aggression.
The Philippines withdrew from the ICC's founding treaty, the Rome Statute, in 2019 after the tribunal launched a probe into the Duterte administration's deadly drug war.
When asked last March about the possibility of the Philippines rejoining the ICC, Marcos simply smiled and said the matter had not been discussed.
This was after the arrest of his predecessor Rodrigo Duterte and the latter's detention in the Netherlands on charges of crimes against humanity before the ICC.
However, Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Atty. Claire Castro recently said the President was open to having discussions with regard to the Philippines rejoining the tribunal. —AOL, GMA Integrated News

President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. on Tuesday tasked the Securities and Exchange Commission to streamline the process of implementing the Capital Markets Efficiency Promotion Act or CMEPA, which redefines how Filipinos make investments. In his speech at the Philippine Stock Exchange during the special bell-ringing to mark the effectivity of Republic Act (R.A.) According to Marcos, the law enhances the Philippines' competitiveness in the ASEAN region as it also strengthens the foundations of the capital market. He also emphasized that market integrity is a shared responsibility, calling on all market participants and stakeholders to uphold transparency, fairness, and good governance. Marcos said CMEPA has removed certain exemptions to enhance fairness in the country's tax system. He noted that government-owned or controlled corporations are now subjected to the same passive income taxes as other institutions. Marcos also said that the new law is projected to generate over P25 billion in net revenue until 2030, which is a substantial amount that is seen to help fund the building of roads, bridges, hospitals, schools, and other social safety net programs. He said the new law would not just benefit the well-off, stock traders, and the professionals. 'It is for every Filipino who dreams of better financial security. Former SC spokesperson to head human rights lawyers group
The Free Legal Assistance Group (FLAG), a network of human rights lawyers, has appointed Atty. Theodore C. Te as its interim chairman starting on Monday, June 20, 2025. "Ted, FLAG's elected vice-chairman for Luzon and regional coordinator for Metro Manila, was appointed by the FLAG National Board at its meeting on June 27, 2025, to serve until the general membership convenes to elect new national and regional officers," the group said in a statement signed by Secretary General Maria Socorro I. Diokno. "FLAG welcomes Ted's leadership as we look forward to meeting the dauting challenges ahead," they added. Atty. Te he was the Chief Public Information Officer of the Supreme Court of the Philippines from 2013 - 2018. He is an assistant professor at the University of the Philippines and Department of International Humanitarian and Human Rights Law, Philippine Judicial Academy (Philja) chairperson, among others. Atty. Te succeeds human rights lawyer and Akbayan Representative Chel Diokno, who was head of the group for more than two decades. DFA lowers alert level for Filipinos in Israel
"In view of the positive developments in the security situation in Israel, the Department of Foreign Affairs lowers the Alert Level in Israel from Level 3 (Voluntary Repatriation) to Level 2 (Restriction Phase), effective immediately," the DFA said in a statement. The Philippines on Monday downgraded the security alert warning for Filipinos Israel, citing the easing of the confict in the country. "In view of the positive developments in the security situation in Israel, the Department of Foreign Affairs lowers the Alert Level in Israel from Level 3 (Voluntary Repatriation) to Level 2 (Restriction Phase), effective immediately," the DFA said in a statement. The Philippines, which has over two million Filipino migrants in the Middle East, earlier welcomed the ceasefire agreed by Israel and Iran last week, but called for continued dialogue to permanently end the armed conflict between the two countries. Manila said it was "hopeful" that the temporary cessation in hostilities would be "a crucial step towards achieving lasting peace in the region." There are around 30,000 mostly Filipino caregivers in Israel and over 1,100 in Iran.
