Baruipur police dismiss Suvendu Adhikari's claim of ‘suspicious' device installation by alleged Kashmiris

The Baruipur police on Thursday (April 24, 2025) refuted allegations made by Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, regarding the presence of two alleged Kashmiri men in the Baruipur area and the installation of what he described as a 'high-performance wireless network bridge' on the rooftop of their residence.
Mr. Adhikari, in a social media post earlier in the day, claimed that the individuals had installed a NanoBeam 2AC device, a compact wireless bridge used for long-distance internet connectivity. He also shared their residential address and expressed concerns over the device, suggesting it could be of suspicious nature.
Mr. Palash Chandra Dhali (IPS); Superintendent Of Police; Baruipur Police District, firstly I appreciate that you were prompt enough to respond after my X Post regarding two individuals staying at Baruipur.
I listened to the Press Conference where you were providing updates… https://t.co/rtsfiOcztLpic.twitter.com/R85REHoN0U — Suvendu Adhikari (@SuvenduWB) April 24, 2025
The police, following verification, stated that the individuals in question were not from Jammu and Kashmir but from Madhya Pradesh and had been residing in a rented accommodation in Baruipur for the past year. The device in question, officials said, was a standard JioFiber internet router and no suspicious materials or activities were found during inspection.
'It is unfortunate that certain individuals choose to disseminate inaccurate and potentially inciteful information via social media, instead of alerting appropriate State or Central agencies,' the Baruipur police said in a statement posted online. The statement further urged citizens not to share unverified information on social media and warned that 'public insinuation against any individual without verifying the facts is legally punishable.'
Speaking to the media, Palash Chandra Dhali, Superintendent of Police, Baruipur, said that both individuals had come to Kolkata around a year ago. 'One is a civil engineer and the other a computer engineer. They are in the city to start a business. The device they installed was solely for internet access,' Mr. Dhali said.
The development comes at a time when several incidents of alleged harassment and targeting of Kashmiri residents have been reported across different parts of the country, following the terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on April 22 that claimed the lives of over 26 tourists, including three from West Bengal.
Later in the day, Mr. Adhikari issued a counter-response on social media, stating that if the police were confident about the individuals' identities and intentions, their details should be made public. 'Since you are willing to give a clean chit to them, why didn't you make them attend the press conference and reveal their identities so that the public would be assured and suspicions could be laid to rest?' he wrote.
The police have not responded further to Mr. Adhikari's remarks at the time of publication.

Suvendu urges R.G. Kar victim's parents to join march against Mamata

Meeting the parents of the young doctor who was raped and killed at the R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, 2024, the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari urged them to join the planned 'Nabanna Abhiyan' (march to State Secretariat) rally against the State government on August 9, 2025. Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Mr. Adhikari said they had agreed to participate in the rally. The rally marks a year since the gruesome crime that brought people on the streets of the city demanding safety for women in public spaces. The parents have in the past 10 months participated in numerous protests seeking justice for their daughter, also referred to as Abhaya. 'In the next one month I will make all efforts to make the movement successful. We will participate without any flags. The only thing which we require is that we should not be humiliated,' Mr. Adhikari said. The BJP leader lauded the difficult fight that the parents had put up against the State government. 'The R.G. Kar Hospital victim had shed blood from her eyes, not tears. The current ruling dispensation offers protection to rapists and torturers, that's why they must go. I will visit the victim's parents soon and seek their blessings for organising this march to Nabanna on her death anniversary, which we will hold without party flags.' the BJP leader has said. One person was arrested and sentenced to a life term in January 2025 in the case. The victim's parents, however, have not been satisfied with the outcome of the investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), and have said that they have been failed by both the State government and the Union government. The parents of the deceased doctor have approached Calcutta High Court with questions on the investigation by the CBI. Recently, the counsel of the parents urged the court to allow them access to the scene of the crime.

Sajad Lone files RTI to assess job reservation impact on Kashmiris

Peoples Conference president and Handwara legislator Sajad Gani Lone on Thursday called for a 'scientific and statistical analysis' of the reservation policy, claiming that it disproportionately affects the Kashmiri-speaking ethnic group. Peoples Conference president and Handwara legislator Sajad Gani Lone. (File) Lone, in a statement, said that he has filed an application under the Right to Information (RTI) Act to gather recruitment data from the last ten government examinations. This data, he said, will help create a 'statistically scientific basis' to evaluate the policy's impact. 'We need the actual marks scored by candidates and the final selection list. By comparing a merit list without reservation with one where reservation is applied, we can quantify the damage inflicted on the Kashmiri-speaking ethnic group,' Lone said. He proposed using selection data from past ten recruitment exams as a sample set, which could be expanded later for broader statistical relevance. 'If the government introduces a revised reservation system, the party will apply it retrospectively to the same recruitment data to assess its effects,' he added. Describing the approach as rational and evidence-based, Lone said, 'Let us end all debates and decide things purely on a scientific basis. And apply remedies on a scientific basis,' he said. In a message to policymakers, Lone cautioned against letting electoral considerations overshadow youth interests. 'Let us separate votes from the future of our youngsters. Let dreams not be massacred at the altar of votes,' he said.
