"India comes 2nd in fisheries production across world," says Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan
Speaking to reporters here, Union Minister Singh said, 'The production of fisheries has to be increased first, the quality will be improved later. India comes 2nd in the world in fisheries production. 70 percent of the contribution comes from the inland states. There is a growth of around 137 per cent in the last 10 years due to the efforts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and initiative taken by him to boost fisheries production.'
Additionally, he thrusted that they still believe that there is a huge potential to increase fisheries production in inland states and held a meeting in Indore for the same purpose.
'We believe that the inland state has immense potential to increase the fisheries production even today and we are here to explore those possibilities. We had a meeting with the governments of the inland states. We will also have a technical session in which discussion will be held and then later, we will decide how to move ahead...,' he added.
The Union Minister further highlighted that they are promoting aquaculture, sustainable fishing, promoting technology and establishing food processing and production units. Export has doubled in the last 10 years from Rs 30,000 crores to Rs 60,000 crores.
According to an official PIB release, Inland fisheries and aquaculture involve catching and farming fish in freshwater and brackish water bodies like rivers, lakes, ponds, and reservoirs. While inland fisheries harvest fish from naturally available species in fresh and brackish water, aquaculture uses controlled methods of fish farming such as pond and cage culture, along with technologies like Recirculatory Aquaculture Systems (RAS) and Biofloc.
Inland fisheries and aquaculture offer year-round production, greater control over inputs and outputs, and better suitability for small-scale farmers. They also offer the unique advantage of bringing underutilised or unproductive ponds and saline affected lands into productive use, effectively turning 'waste land' into 'wealth land' while generating income and livelihoods, especially in rural areas.
With support from 8 ICAR fisheries institutes, 4 fisheries subordinate offices and fisheries universities technology has become pivotal to the growth of inland fisheries and aquaculture. Under PMMSY (Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana) and the Blue Revolution, 45,000 units--including RAS, cages, Biofloc systems, and raceways--have been approved across inland states and UTs, boosting productivity up to 20-fold. Gandhi said on Wednesday that Trump was repeating his claims to pressure New Delhi on a trade deal that is in the works. 'Just watch how the trade deal turns out,' he added. On Tuesday, speaking during a debate on the Pahalgam terror attack and the subsequent Operation Sindoor, Gandhi asked the prime minister to ' show courage ' and clarify if Trump was lying about mediating the ceasefire deal. 'Donald Trump has said 29 times that he brought about the ceasefire,' Gandhi said. 'If he is lying… let the prime minister say he is lying. Trump announced higher levies in April, before pausing those tariffs at a reduced 10% rate to allow time for negotiations. Despite an extended deadline, he has only secured a handful of deals.

"Some States Failed...": Minister Announces Changes To Crop Insurance Scheme
Hyderabad: Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has announced crucial modifications to the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY), citing the Centre's experience with the previous Jagan Reddy government in Andhra Pradesh. The changes aim to ensure that farmers are not denied crop insurance benefits due to the default of state governments. Responding to a question from Rajasthan MP Hanuman Beniwal, Minister Chouhan detailed how the Modi government transformed the earlier National Agricultural Insurance Scheme (NAIS) into the PMFBY, with a mandate to settle farmer claims within 21 days. He then highlighted a critical issue that emerged in Andhra Pradesh. "Some states had announced that they would bear the farmer insurance premium themselves. However, in Andhra Pradesh, the then Jagan government failed to contribute its state share towards the premium for three consecutive years," Mr Chouhan revealed. "Due to this, farmers in Andhra Pradesh suffered immensely as they were denied their rightful crop insurance." Emphasising the Centre's commitment to farmers, Shivraj Singh stated that this "bad experience" had led to a fundamental policy modification. Under the revised PMFBY, the Union Government will now pay its share for crop insurance irrespective of whether the state government fulfils its premium contribution. To ensure accountability and prevent future lapses, the Union Minister announced a stringent penalty mechanism. "If a state government does not pay its share, it will be charged at 12% interest, and that amount will be directly credited to the farmers' accounts," Mr Chouhan affirmed. "The insurance would not be denied to farmers, and the state would be penalised." This significant policy shift aims to safeguard farmers from bureaucratic delays and political inaction at the state level, ensuring timely and uninterrupted access to crucial crop insurance benefits.

SIR in Bihar an assault on foundations of democracy: Ex-bureaucrats
New Delhi, Jul 30 (PTI) Over 90 former bureaucrats have expressed their concern over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, terming it an assault on democracy which would disenfranchise a huge segment of the voting population, including those who possess little or no documentation as proof of their citizenship. In an open letter, 93 retired officers from the three all-India and various Union government services who are part of the 'Constitutional Conduct Group' (CCG), have alleged that continuing the 'futile" SIR of the voter rolls in Bihar and extending the exercise to the rest of the country 'poses one of the biggest threats Indian democracy has faced". 'We are writing to express our alarm at what appears to be an assault on the very foundations of our democracy — the system of universal adult suffrage — the citizen's right to vote. The assault is an insidious one where the purported attempt to clean up and sanitise the electoral rolls is likely to end up disenfranchising a very large segment of the voting population, particularly the poor and the marginalised, who possess little or no official documentation as proof of their citizenship. 'So far, a liberal and flexible approach to documentary corroboration of citizenship was followed in the preparation of electoral rolls knowing full well that most Indians lack adequate documents and certificates to establish their citizenship status. It was also recognised that the poor are especially deprived in their access to official documentation resources and therefore need proactive measures to ensure their inclusion. This process has now been reversed to ensure that those with poor access to documents will be deprived of their rights as voters," the letter read. The former civil servants said the Election Commission (EC) has inverted long-standing precedent by putting the onus on the elector to prove their citizenship, effectively given itself the authority to confer or take away citizenship rights without a constitutional mandate to do so, and conferred 'extraordinary discretionary powers" to officials 'to indulge in rent seeking to remove or add voters". 'The continuation of this futile exercise and its proposed extension to the rest of the country, especially when all that is required is routine updation of existing data in the regular course of the EC's scheduled activities, poses one of the biggest threats Indian democracy has faced, from the very institution that is meant to uphold the system of universal suffrage," the letter said. The former bureaucrats noted that the SIR is claimed to be an exercise in pursuit of the responsibility entrusted to the ECI under the Constitution, yet what it is effectively doing is to invert precept and practice to pass the burden for proving citizenship to the voter instead of the authorities having to prove why they have excluded someone based on fake citizenship. 'As if it was not enough to commission an SIR which was capable of subverting the electoral process in the garb of reforming it, the breakneck speed with which it has been implemented, the impossible timelines given to the booth level officers (BLOs), the grossly inadequate infrastructure provided or made available to digitise the data has made a mockery of the very elaborate procedures the ECI has laid down," it read.
