Veligonda project remedy for fluorosis: Dinakar
Ongole: The 20-Point Programme Implementation Committee chairman Lanka Dinakar conducted a review of drinking water issues, fluoride contamination, and implementation of the centrally-sponsored schemes and programmes in the Prakasam district with collector A Thameem Ansariya and other district officials at the Collectorate here on Tuesday. He discussed the reasons for the drought and water crisis in the district and opined that the speedy completion of the Pula Subbaiah Veligonda Project is the remedy to the water problems.
Dinakar observed that the Prakasam district faces dual challenges of water scarcity and severe fluoride contamination, particularly in western regions. Out of 1769 villages across 729 panchayats in the district, 1009 villages are affected by fluoride contamination, and only 27 of them are being provided safe drinking water by the government.
He said that the Kanigiri assembly constituency has become a hub for chronic kidney ailments, where the fluoride in water is up to 6.40 PPM when the maximum permissible PPM is just 1.50.
Dinakar said that of the 51 mandals declared drought-affected in the state, 17 are in Prakasam district, with 11 facing severe drought conditions. In western Prakasam, 93 villages across 12 mandals are severely affected, with groundwater levels dropping to 63.50 meters below the surface at Dornala.
He observed that Yerragondapalem, which is designated as an Aspiration Block by the central government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, has shown progress in six key indicators.
The officials reported to him achievements including 91 percent registration for pregnant women's protection, 81 percent diabetes and BP testing, 100 per cent nutritional food distribution for pregnant women, 45 per cent issuance of soil health cards, and 60 per cent revolving fund distribution to self-help groups. He announced that plans have been prepared to address drinking water shortages of 4 MLD in Ongole city, 3.43 MLD in Markapur, and 0.34 MLD in Chimakurthi, and informed that the government has sanctioned Rs 13.92 crore for immediate needs during summer, including Rs 4.40 crore for Ongole municipality.
To address the fluoride contamination and the drought condition, he emphasised the need to complete the Veligonda project to provide safe drinking water through household tap connections under the Jal Jeevan Mission.

New Delhi, June 29: A revolution in education is in the offing with the development of an indigenous technology for the large-scale preparation of teaching aids by the Indian Registry of Pathology (IRP) in New Delhi. Originally developed for teaching pathology in medical colleges, the development can be adapted for the teaching of any subject in schools and colleges, it is said. The IRP technology essentially consists in the presentation of teaching material in slides. IRP is now producing black and white colour slides of autopsy specimens, whole disease organs, charts, formulas and tables as teaching material for medical students, Dr. S. Sriramachari, Director of the Registry, said. The impact on education of the 'slide technology' will be tremendous, it is said, because IRP's methods for mass-producing colour transparencies at an extremely low cost is based on the ordinary Eastman cinematographic film. So far slides have been made with conventional colour film like 'Kodachrome and Ektachrome at a cost of over Rs. 4 per slide. IRP slides cost less than 40 paise each. 'The use of cinematographic film for this purpose has ushered in a virtual technological revolution,' Dr. Sriramachari said. The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has expressed interest in the IRP technology for making educational slides. What would take 15 minutes to draw on the blackboard can be shown in one slide, Dr. Sriramachari said.

Clinic told to refund fees for failed hair treatment
Ahmedabad: A consumer commission here has ordered a health clinic to refund fees, and awarded Rs 40,000 compensation to a law student after an unsatisfactory 'New Hair' treatment. The compensation was ordered for the clinic's misleading advertisement and unfair trade practice. This case involved an LLB student from Gandhinagar, Shrey Bodakiya, who opted for 'New Hair' treatment with the clinic in Ahmedabad and paid a Rs 53,000 in April 2023. After undergoing treatment, Bodakiya felt that the purpose of the treatment was not served, and the clinic did not offer free sessions in accordance with the promise made earlier once the treatment did not have the desired effect. Bodakiya sued the clinic in June 2024 with the District Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission, Ahmedabad (Additional), complaining about the clinic's misleading advertisement and its failure to produce results and to follow its own promise of offering free sessions of treatment. Patwari attacks govt over failure to curb high infant deaths
Bhopal: Congress state president Jitu Patwari on Sunday accused the state govt of failing to reduce infant and maternal mortality rates, despite spending Rs 10,000 crore over the past five years to check the health issues. Citing the latest Sample Survey System (SSR) report, he said 40 children among 1,000 children born in a year fail to see their first birthday. While IMR in the country fell to 26 from 40 per 1,000 children between 2013 to 2022, in the state it has only come down from 53 to 40 in the same period.
