Tony Awards 2025 nominations: George Clooney gets nod while Denzel Washington snubbed

Yahoo01-05-2025
Nominees for the 78th annual Tony Awards, honoring the best of Broadway, have been announced.
Forty-two productions from the 2024-2025 Broadway season were eligible to receive nominations, which were shared Thursday morning by Tony winners Sarah Paulson and Wendell Pierce.
Oscar winner George Clooney is among the A-list stars who have been recognized.
Clooney, currently making his Broadway debut as Edward R. Murrow in Good Night, and Good Luck, received a nod in the Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play category. The role marks his first on stage performance since 1986 when he appeared in Vicious at the Steppenwolf Theatre in Chicago.
Stranger Things star Sadie Sink received a nomination in her return to Broadway. She's been nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Play for her role as Shelby Holcomb in playwright Kimberly Belflower's John Proctor is the Villain. The production also received a nod for Best Play. Sink last appeared on Broadway in 2015's The Audience.
Nominated alongside her is Succession star Sarah Snook, currently starring in The Picture of Dorian Gray. Snook is making her Broadway debut following a successful run in London's West End.
Former Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger received a nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical for playing Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard. Similar to Snook, Scherzinger is making her Broadway debut with the production following its' London run. The production was also nominated for Best Revival of a Musical.
But not all celebrities who took their work to the Main Stem were recognized by the Tonys.
Oscar winner Denzel Washington was snubbed in the category where Clooney was recognized. Washington marked his return to Broadway as the title role in Othello. He last appeared on the Main Stem in 2018's The Iceman Cometh, and won a Tony for his leading role in Fences in 2010. Washington's co-star, Jake Gyllenhaal was also snubbed. The three-time Tony nominee is playing Iago in the Shakespearean revival.
Oscar and Emmy winner Kieran Culkin was not recognized for his work as Richard Roma in Glengarry Glen Ross. The production marks Culkin's return to Broadway following 2014's This Is Our Youth.
In his Broadway debut, Oscar winner Robert Downey Jr. was overlooked in the Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play category. He starred as the titular character in the limited run of McNeal.
Nick Jonas, in his return to the Main Stem for the first time since 2012's How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, was also snubbed. Jonas is starring alongside Tony winner Adrienne Warren in the first-ever Broadway mounting of Jason Robert Brown's The Last Five Years.
Interestingly, two productions — Our Town and Romeo + Juliet — were each nominated for Best Revival of a Play. But the stars at the forefront of those productions — Jim Parsons and Katie Holmes, and Kit Connor and Rachel Zegler — did not receive acting nods.
The 78th annual Tony Awards will take place Sunday, June 8 at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. Hosted by Tony, Grammy, and Emmy winner Cynthia Erivo, the Tonys will be broadcast live on CBS starting at 8 p.m. ET.

Anthony Mackie Says an Unreleased Film From the ‘Worst Director to Ever Direct' Almost Cost Him His ‘Hurt Locker' Role: ‘They Offered It To Somebody Else'

Anthony Mackie is opening up about how he almost lost his role in 'The Hurt Locker' because of another director's unreleased film. During a recent episode of Variety's 'Know Their Lines,' Mackie shared the backstory behind being cast in the 2009 Oscar-winner. More from Variety Anthony Mackie Jokes He's a 'White Dude Legend' Since His Co-Stars Often Get Award Nominations Over Him: 'I Made Ryan Gosling Famous. Jeremy Renner...' 'Captain America: Brave New World' Sets Disney+ Streaming Date 'Sneaks' Review: Sneakerhead Culture Gets Animated in Pedestrian Kiddie Feature ''Hurt Locker' is probably one of the most important acting experiences I had,' he began. 'We shot that in 2007, and I remember I was doing a movie in North Carolina with quite possibly the worst director to ever direct. Ironically, because of that the movie never came out.' He continued, 'Because of that, the movie went over and I had to pull out of 'Hurt Locker.' They offered it to somebody else, and he said no because it wasn't enough money.' Despite Mackie being tied up with the other film, the production offered him the role again and was willing to wait until he wrapped the unreleased project. 'I went from this sucky director who had no business in being in the business or in the director's chair to Kathryn Bigelow,' Mackie said. 'The moment I landed in Amman, Jordan, we hit the ground running [with] cultural research, military research, character studies – the real work a director does. It really was poignant to me the type of people I want to work with and the type of people who shouldn't be working.' Mackie's performance in 'The Hurt Locker' was a career-defining role as he played Sergeant J.T. Sanborn, a soldier and member of the fictional bomb disposal unit in Baghdad, Iraq. The film received widespread critical praise for its portrayal of the war in Iraq. At the 82nd Academy Awards in 2010, 'The Hurt Locker' took home six awards from its nine nominations for best motion picture, best achievement in directing, best writing, original screenplay, best achievement in film editing, best achievement in sound mixing and best achievement in sound editing. I'm still obsessed with this masterpiece movie from 2019 — and you can stream it now on Prime Video

For a drummer, the literal heartbeat of any band, the only thing more precious than your hands are your ears, crucial not only for maintaining timing and rhythm but also the dynamics and community of your fellow musicians around you. The thought of losing that vital sense lends a visceral, pounding fear worthy of a horror movie in 'Sound of Metal,' a devastating musical drama that has haunted yours truly since I saw it back in 2019. Led by Oscar nominee Riz Ahmed ('The Phoenician Scheme,' 'The Night Of') and directed and co-written by Darius Marder ('Loot,' 'The Place Beyond the Pines'), the heart-crushing title poses an impossible question to any musician: Would you risk your own hearing to continue making the music you love? Such is the fate of Ahmed's Ruben Stone after one too many gigs of hard-hitting, ear-splitting metal music, a choice made even more complicated by the fact of Ruben's sobriety efforts. One of the best movies on Prime Video, the impact of 'Sound of Metal' thumps on long after the credits roll. Here's why you should check out the drama on Amazon's streaming service and add it to your watchlist. In 'Sound of Metal,' Riz Ahmed stars as Ruben Stone, a punk-rock drummer and recovering addict whose world is upturned when he starts experiencing intermittent hearing loss. When a specialist warns him that his condition will worsen should he not give up his base-thumping lifestyle, Ruben begins to spiral, mourning the loss of his music career and life's passion. His girlfriend-slash-bandmate Lou Berger (Olivia Cooke) checks Ruben into a secluded sober house for the deaf in the hopes that it will prevent him from relapse. There, he learns not only how to be a member of the deaf community but also how to face the realities of his new normal. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. Along with being one of the most acclaimed movies of 2019, 'Sound of Metal' is one of the finest examples that cinema is as much an aural experience as it is a visual medium. The musical drama scored Academy Award nominations for Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Actor for Ahmed and Best Supporting Actor for Paul Raci, as well as deserved wins for Best Sound and Best Film Editing. The masterful sound design shifts between high volume, distorted noise and sudden silence, not only mimicking the experience of hearing loss but immersively and viscerally putting the audience inside the perspective of Ahmed's Ruben throughout the entire feature, never letting up that this is a life-altering situation that the character cannot escape. For the strength of that sound experience as well as its affecting acting performances, the drama received near-universal praise from critics. It garnered an excellent 97% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 281 reviews, with the site's critical consensus reading: "An evocative look at the experiences of the deaf community, 'Sound of Metal' is brought to life by Riz Ahmed's passionate performance." 'World's Richest Actress' Identified as Beloved 80s Star — But There's a Catch

'World's Richest Actress' Identified as Beloved 80s Star — But There's a Catch originally appeared on Parade. Jami Gertz made a name for herself in the 80s, appearing in a variety of popular films, including Sixteen Candles. In 1989, she married private equity investor Tony Ressler, who is now a billionaire. According to the Daily Mail, Gertz is known as the "world's richest actress," thanks to her husband's $14 billion net worth. Thought Gertz has earned plenty of her own money, her billionaire status is widely thanks to Ressler. "Everyone thinks I married a rich guy," she told The Hollywood Reporter in October 2018. "But I made more money — way more money — than Tony when I met him. I paid for our first house. I paid for our first vacation. I married him because I fell in love with him.' Gertz and Ressler, who share three sons and one daughter, are still happily married. Over the years, they've collaborated on a number of different projects, including the purchase of and NBA team — the Atlanta Hawks — for a whopping $850 million back in 2015, according to the Wall Street Journal. Despite making a great deal of money alongside her husband, Gertz appears to truly enjoy acting. From 2002 through 2006, she appeared in a recurring role on the television series Still Standing. She took on a few other projects before inking a deal to appear in 44 episodes of The Neighbors from 2012 through 2014. Gertz has all but left Hollywood for a life that involves more behind-the-scenes projects. Per her IMDb page, she hasn't acted in anything since I Want You Back in 2022. Prior to that, her last project was in 2017. These days, Gertz and her husband live a relatively quiet life, splitting their time between Los Angeles and Atlanta, according to Fortune. 🎬 SIGN UP for Parade's Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox 🎬 'World's Richest Actress' Identified as Beloved 80s Star — But There's a Catch first appeared on Parade on Aug 1, 2025 This story was originally reported by Parade on Aug 1, 2025, where it first appeared.
