Small boat capsizes off Belawai, killing 10 including 3 children

New Straits Times13 hours ago
BELAWAI: Ten people, including three children, lost their lives when an overloaded fibreglass boat capsized in rough seas off Pantai Belawai last Saturday.
Police said that the tragedy was due to overloading, with the vessel carrying 17 Indonesians along with various goods.
Sarikei district police chief Superintendent Aswandy Anis said the boat was not designed to carry such a heavy load, especially with both passengers and cargo on board, Kosmo! reported.
"With 17 people and goods onboard, the boat became difficult to control. When it encountered strong waves, it capsized immediately," he said.
The victims were en route from the Kampung Belawai fishermen's jetty to the Zion Pelita plantation jetty when the incident occurred at around 2pm.
The bodies of five men, two women, two young boys, and a girl were recovered.
Seven others were rescued by a local man and his nephew, who rushed to the scene after witnessing the capsizing.
"Suddenly, we saw people floating and waving for help, so my nephew and I got on a boat and rushed over," said 63-year-old Madihi Basah, who had been resting in a hut near the beach when the tragedy unfolded.
A Search And Rescue (SAR) team recovered the remaining five missing victims yesterday morning in waters around Muara Belawai, Sungai Pinang, and Sungai Selumit. A three-year-old boy had been found the evening before, about 300m from the fire and rescue operations post.

Youth claims trial to raping teenage girlfriend

The Kota Kinabalu Court Complex. KOTA KINABALU (July 8): A 19-year-old unemployed youth claimed trial in a Sessions Court here to raping his teenage girlfriend. Eryidley Jarry, who appeared before judge Amir Shah Amir Hassan, was accused of raping the 14-year-old girl inside a car parked at the roadside in Tuaran at 1am on June 25. The alleged offence was under Section 376(1) of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to 20 years and whipping, upon conviction. The court set August 8 to re-mention the case and released Eryidley on RM6,000 bail with two local sureties. Eryidley, who was unrepresented, was ordered to report to a nearest police station once a month and to surrender his passport, if any, to the court, pending disposal of his case. He was unrepresented. In an unrelated case, a company was fined by another Sessions Court here for separate charges of allowing illegal immigrants to remain in premises. Judge Hurman Hussain fined the company RM15,000 after its representative admitted to give permission for undocumented Indonesians to be at a factory in Ranau on October 24, 2023. The offence was under Section 55E (1) of the Immigration Act 19563.

Migrants jump from building in failed escape during KL immigration raid

KUALA LUMPUR: Desperate attempts to escape an immigration raid turned chaotic as two migrants jumped from a second-floor shophouse while others faked injuries or claimed UNHCR status. The Kuala Lumpur Immigration Department (JIM) detained 60 undocumented foreigners in a late-night operation. Kuala Lumpur JIM director Wan Mohammed Saupee Wan Yusoff confirmed the arrests, stating that 28 officers were deployed in 'Op Selera' and 'Op Kutip' from 10 pm to 2 am. The raids targeted a food court and two shophouses in Cheras, Pudu, and Chow Kit. 'One of the Bangladeshi men who jumped pretended to have a broken leg, while others claimed to hold UNHCR cards,' Wan Mohammed Saupee said. A total of 137 individuals were screened, with 60 detained—including Indonesians, Myanmar nationals, Bangladeshis, and one Pakistani. The operation saw 16 arrests at a Cheras food court, 30 in Pudu, and 14 in Chow Kit. All detainees were taken to the Kuala Lumpur Immigration Depot for processing under immigration laws. Locals reportedly supported the crackdown, expressing concerns over the growing presence of undocumented migrants in business districts like Chow Kit and Pudu. - Bernama
