Coach Alves leaves Notts after Paterson appointment

BBC News5 days ago

Notts County assistant coach Joao Alves has left the League Two club by mutual consent. The Portuguese 35-year-old had been seen as one of the favourites to succeed former boss Stuart Maynard at Meadow Lane, having stepped up to become the Magpies' number two last season. But his four years with Notts has now come to an end just three days after Martin Paterson was appointed as head coach.Alves joined the club in 2021 as a match analyst, having previously worked for the club's owners, Chris and Alexander Reedtz, at Football Radar – a company founded by the Danish brothers that provides statistical football analysis and betting advice. He moved into a coaching role at Notts under Luke Williams, who guided the club to promotion from the National League in 2023.
On Tuesday, Chris Reedtz confirmed that Alves was still "employed and part of the first-team coaching staff" and dismissed the suggestion that he had been the top contender for the top job."We considered a lot of candidates and I don't want to talk about specific names," Reedtz told BBC Radio Nottingham when asked about Alves' links to the job as head coach."Bookmakers' odds can be misleading sometimes, so I wouldn't put too much into that. But he is a very good coach and someone who has done a great job for the club."Paterson will have Andy Edwards as assistant head coach, with goalkeeper Sam Slocombe staying on at Meadow Lane as a first-team coach.

Gyokeres furious with Sporting and repeats threat amid Man Utd and Arsenal saga

Viktor Gyokeres is annoyed with Sporting (Image:) Viktor Gyokeres will refuse to return to Sporting Lisbon this summer in an attempt to force through a transfer. Things have turned increasingly sour between the Swedish striker and his current club, who are dragging their feet over his exit in an attempt to extract the best transfer fee possible. Sporting president Frederico Varandas has been extremely vocal recently about the bitter saga in an attempt to keep supporters onside. At the centre of the dispute is an apparent gentleman's agreement, made between Gyokeres and the club hierarchy, that he would be allowed to leave for less than his official release clause. Gyokeres has made it clear that this summer is his time to leave Lisbon in search of new opportunities and a higher level of football. He plundered 53 goals and 13 assists in 51 games across the 2024/25 season, helping Sporting win the league and cup double, and feels he should be afforded some good will. Sporting have granted Gyokeres an extra week off before he is due to report for pre-season, but Portuguese newspaper Record says he has no intention of showing up. He has also threatened to speak publicly to give his side of the story. Gyokeres has been a target of both Manchester United and Arsenal, who previously saw an offer of £55m rejected by Sporting. But with United moving for Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, and Arsenal preferring RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko, there has been little movement in recent weeks. That has left Gyokeres frustrated, with the former Coventry man wanting to get a move sorted as soon as possible. Things have deteriorated and, when he does leave, it will be under a cloud, with Varandas refusing to back down. Viktor Gyokeres has vowed to never play for Sporting again (Image: Getty Images) "Sporting is calm regarding this matter," he said. "Secondly, Sporting does not need to sell Viktor Gyökeres. Fortunately, we have moved past the phase of selling our main asset. "However, we remain sensitive to Viktor's dreams or those of any other athlete. Sporting has made a commitment that, after weeks of meetings, we will not demand the full amount of the clause; we will be reasonable regarding the amount requested for Viktor. "Today, there is a strong likelihood that he will leave. I won't disclose the amount, but the player knows what it is. I can say that Viktor will not leave for 60+10m. He won't leave, absolutely not. "We have been watching the market and I saw [Martin] Zubimendi, who is six months younger than Viktor, leave for €65million. I saw Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, both forwards but who, in my opinion, do not have Viktor's market value or quality, being negotiated for around €75million. "Given the demands we consider fair, I believe Viktor could leave – unless he has the worst agent in the world, which is hard for me to believe, because he is one of the best footballers in the world." And the Portuguese giants' president Frederico Varandas has warned the Gunners: pay up or miss out. 4 Viktor Gyokeres finally loos set for a Prem switch this summer Credit: Getty 4 Benjamin Sesko remains another option for Arsenal and Co Credit: Getty Boss Mikel Arteta has earmarked the striker as a top target to bolster his attack in this window, alongside Red Bull Leipzig frontman Benjamin Sesko – but both deals are currently in limbo. Gyokeres, 27, has been left furious with Sporting over an alleged breach of a gentleman's agreement that would let him leave for around £60m – lower than his release clause of around £80m – and is now refusing to play for the Portuguese side again. Arteta was hoping to land the Swede for a bargain price, but Varandas has doubled down on only selling the star for a fair market value, citing Arsenal's move for Real Sociedad's Martin Zubimendi and Manchester United's pursuit of new-boy Matheus Cunha and Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo. Varandas has even threatened to keep Gyokeres in Portugal if Arsenal continue to low ball, hoping to receive close to £70m to seal the switch. The Gunners were confident of doing their business quickly this summer after months of preparation by boss Mikel Arteta and new sporting director Andrea Berta. But inflated asking prices and broken gentlemen's agreements have derailed those plans and left Arsenal frustrated. Sesko believed he would be allowed to leave RB Leipzig for around £60million, while SunSport understands Gyokeres was told £59m would be enough to seal his own exit. But those price-tags have gone up, leaving Arsenal debating whether they represent value for money. While the players' camps are also growing restless, knowing the Gunners can only sign one of them. So what next? Will Arsenal keep waiting in the hope of fees eventually going down? Or turn to other targets, like Frankfurt's Hugo Ekitike? Whatever they decide, with pre-season looming and the fixtures already out, Arteta will be desperate for them to move quickly to avoid another nearly season. 'Given the demands we consider fair, I believe Viktor could leave – unless he has the worst agent in the world, which is hard for me to believe, because he is one of the best footballers in the world. Arsenal are set to announce the arrival of midfielder Zubimendi, and are in talks to sign Valencia centre back Christian Mosquera for around £20m. Varandas said: 'If Viktor stays, we will be very, very happy – and it will be a problem for our rivals. 'We are completely prepared to move for our target if Viktor leaves.' Gyokeres is currently on holiday after international duty with Sweden and is due to report back for pre-season in Lisbon on July 7 unless a deal is struck before then. Arsenal are in a similar mess with 22-year-old Sesko, who is angry over Leipzig's hard-ball stance, demanding £70m despite a lower initial gentleman's agreement in January. 4 TRANSFER NEWS LIVE - KEEP UP WITH ALL THE LATEST FROM A BUSY SUMMER WINDOW
