Another six people injured as bulls charge through Spain's Pamplona

MADRID: A futher six people were injured today as bulls were driven through the narrow streets of Pamplona for the seventh time this week, as this year's edition of the iconic, yet controversial San Fermín festival nears its close, German Press Agency (dpa) reported. The narrow, winding 800-metre course leading to the bullring saw numerous people get injured, a spokeswoman for the Red Cross told Spanish channel RTVE, citing preliminary figures. Five people were brought to hospital, including one of the bull runners who was hit by a bull's horn in the genital area, according to the spokeswoman. The latest, and penultimate bull run in the northern Spanish city saw numerous falls, as shown in the broadcast by RTVE. In two instances, bulls pushed runners out of the way using their heads, causing both the men and the animals to fall. Another runner managed to get to safety in a bend, but his red shirt was impaled by the horn of a passing bull. However, he was able to free himself after a few seconds. The festival is held in honour of the city's patron saint, San Fermín, and has been celebrated in the northern city of Pamplona every July since the late 16th century, despite the protests in recent decades of animal rights activists. Each morning at 8am for eight consecutive days, six fighting bulls and several tame oxen are driven through the old town's narrow streets to the bullring, where the evening's bullfights take place. There, the bulls are killed by matadors in traditional bullfights. The final run will take place tomorrow. The bulls' long, pointed horns can cause fatal goring injuries. Since 1924, 16 people have died during the runs. Many of the mostly male runners attempt to race in front of or alongside the six bulls, often trying to touch their horns or backs as they run.

‘No one is above the club': Sporting president hits out at Gyokeres over training absence amid Arsenal transfer saga

LISBON, July 13 — Sporting President Frederico Varandas has warned that striker Viktor Gyokeres will be fined and asked to apologise to his squad after failing to turn up for pre-season training on time, amid reports of a move away from the Portuguese club. The 27-year-old Sweden international was due to report for Sporting's training camp in Portugal's southern Algarve region on July 12 after being granted an extended break, according to media reports. Gyokeres, who scored 54 goals last season, has three years left on his Sporting contract and has been linked with a move to Premier League club Arsenal. 'We're calm. Everything will be resolved with the closing of the market, a heavy fine, and an apology to the group,' Varandas told the Lusa news agency on Saturday. 'If they (interested clubs) don't want to pay fair market value for Viktor, we are very comfortable with that for the next three years. 'If the geniuses who are devising this strategy think that this puts pressure on me to facilitate the exit, they are not only completely wrong but are also making the player's exit even more complicated. 'No one is above the club's interests, whoever they may be.' Gyokeres has bagged 97 goals in 102 matches for Sporting since his 2023 move from English second-tier club Coventry City, winning the Primeira Liga title in the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons. JDT hold La Liga side Levante to a draw

KUALA LUMPUR: Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) continued their impressive preseason form in Spain by holding newly promoted La Liga side Levante UD to a goalless draw in a friendly on Saturday. The match, held at Levante's training centre in Bunol, saw the Segunda Division champions pile continuous pressure on the 11-time Super League champions. However, JDT, guided by Xisco Munoz, showed defensive steel throughout the match. Leading the JDT charge was Arif Aiman Hanapi, who showcased his trademark flair and agility, creating several chances and forcing the Levante defence to stay on high alert. The draw against Levante follows JDT's earlier 2-2 stalemate with English Championship side Cardiff City, reinforcing the Johor club's growing reputation as more than just a domestic powerhouse. The Southern Tigers will wrap up their Spanish tour with a final friendly against Valencia's reserve team, Valencia Mestalla, at the Camilo Cano Olympic Stadium tomorrow.
