Quebec paramedics are on general unlimited strike

Some 3,300 paramedics under CSN unions have gone on general unlimited strike as of 12:01 a.m. Sunday.
They have been without a collective agreement since April 2023 and the unions say the Treasury Board is dragging its feet in negotiations.
The consequences of the strike will have little impact on the population as essential services are being maintained under perimeters set by the Administrative Labour Tribunal on Friday.
It will mainly include administrative pressure tactics. Paramedics will also go on a rotating strike with management staff replacing them.
Thirty-five notices of indefinite strike action have been issued in several cities across Quebec by unions affiliated with the CSN's Health and Social Services Federation.
'The CAQ government tells us that it thinks there are too many strikes in Quebec, but ... it refuses to put serious proposals on the table until it feels the heat of mobilization,' said CSN First Vice-President François Enault in a statement.
'We intend to use all means necessary to ensure that Quebec paramedics obtain working conditions that reflect the full value of their contribution to our society,' Enault continued.
Salaries are among the main issues in dispute, but so are 'respect for work schedules, in order to combat the explosion of overtime' and improvements to the pension plan. The unions say those must reflect 'the reality of this demanding profession, both physically and mentally.'
They say the government's current demands would result in a decrease in paramedics' income.
'The government knows full well that paramedics will never accept a pay cut,' said FSSS-CSN Vice-President Lucie Longchamp. 'How is it that, two years after the agreements expired, it is still unable to offer the same salary increases at the negotiating table that it negotiated with all its other employee groups?'
The strike particularly affects Abitibi-Témiscamingue, Greater Montreal, the Laurentians, Lanaudière, Montérégie, Estrie, Mauricie, the greater Quebec City area (including Charlevoix), Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean, North Shore, and Lower St. Lawrence.
Nine days of negotiations with the employer are scheduled for July.

Regina Urgent Care Centre forced to close early for second time in a month

WATCH: Regina's Urgent Care Centre is on regular hours again after being forced to close early on Sunday due to staff shortages. Wayne Mantyka reports. Regina's Urgent Care Centre is back to operating on regular hours again after being forced to close early on Sunday due to a physician shortage – which has spurred questions from the NDP Opposition. Sunday, July 6 marks the second time in less than a month that the facility was forced to close its doors early due to staffing issues. The facility normally accepts patients until 9:30 p.m. but was forced to close at 4 p.m. Sunday. The centre was supposed to be operating 24/7 last fall. As the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) COO Derek Miller told reporters Monday, recruiting doctors has been an ongoing challenge for the agency. 'We have been careful to understand the impact of recruiting physicians from community – away from family practices for recruitment of family physicians and also the emergency room physicians,' Miller explained. 'We need to be able to sustain emergency room services at the Pasqua Hospital and the [Regina General Hospital].' Originally, Regina's Urgent Care Centre was supposed to be open around the clock. Now the SHA says that between the centre and emergency rooms, patient demand is being met. 'We know that our peak demand throughout the day for urgent type services be it that are coming through the emergency rooms or the UCC we're covering that now,' Miller added. The province plans to open additional urgent care centres in Saskatoon, Moose Jaw, Prince Albert and North Battleford. The NDP Opposition questions how the government plans to staff more facilities given the situation in Regina. 'They can't even properly staff the one facility that they have open,' NDP MLA Keith Jorgenson said. 'You know, this is all smoke and mirrors.' The SHA says it will continue to assess how the Urgent Care Centre and emergency rooms are working together in meeting patient needs. The assessment will guide a future decision on Urgent Care Centre hours. In the meantime, physician recruitment continues.

Summer camps in full swing across Lethbridge

School's out and summer camps are popping up all over Lethbridge. Families are signing up their kids for some fun experiences over their break. School's out and summer camps are popping up all over Lethbridge. Families are signing up their kids for some fun experiences over their break. The University of Lethbridge had been quiet since the winter semester ended. But that changed last week with the start of its annual summer day camps. 'We are always really busy, and we are busy again. So, we are about 98 per cent full for our summer camps. There's a few spots left and random camp, but we're definitely hitting our marks for sure,' said Stephanie Cook with University of Lethbridge athletics and recreation services. Lethbridge Polytechnic's summer camps just opened this week. This year will feature new technology-based camps. A coding camp has been added this year after kids in last year's camps asked about one. 'Some of the new camps that we're looking to add this summer are technology-focused camps that were really inspired by our campers and their families, who are really passionate about exploring interesting areas within technology. So, we've added a coding camp, a game designer camp, as well as a STEM camp this upcoming summer,' said Lethbridge Polytechnic youth initiatives manager Paige Thornborough. It isn't just Lethbridge's post-secondaries running camps. The YMCA has its day camps in full swing. There are still spaces left for later in the summer, but they're filling up quickly. While the summer camps are fun, the threat of measles is looming. Since March, the south zone has seen 753 cases of measles. None of the three-day camp providers have changed their sanitation policy, but they are making sure to clean and sanitize often. 'We take camper health and safety very seriously here at Lethbridge Polytechnic. And any time that families are sending us their campers, we really take that responsibility to heart. So when it comes to ensuring campers' safety and heat waves or illness transmission, there are definitely steps that we already have in place to ensure that campers' safety is again at the absolute top of our priority list,' said Thornborough. A measles vaccination isn't required to attend camp at the YMCA or the post-secondary schools.
