TN govt cancels permission for expansion of textile washing plant on banks of Bhavani river
Sources said a private group had applied to the state government to set up a textile washing plant under the guise of expansion, based on the license of a small factory that already existed there, on the banks of the Bhavani near Kodiveri Dam in Akkaraikodiveri village. Subsequently, on November 26, 2024, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change of the Tamil Nadu government granted permission for the 'expansion' of this plant.
However, farmers feared that this plant would pollute the river. Therefore, farmers from various parts of Erode were staging protests urging the state government to cancel permission for this plant. On March 27, 2025, the farmers met Chief Minister MK Stalin, and Ministers Thangam Thennarasu and S Muthusamy in person regarding this.
Following this, the government formed a committee to review permission for the plant. Subsequently, the state government has now cancelled permission for the expansion of the plant.
Secretary of Environment, Climate Change in the forest department Supriya Sahu, in her order, dated June 10, said, "In the circumstances stated by the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) chairperson, the orders issued in the G.O. (dated November 26, 2024) are hereby cancelled."
Farmers in Erode district have welcomed this move by the state government. President of Kodiveri Dam-Bhavani River Irrigation Farmers Association Subi Thalapathi, said, "The state government has now cancelled permission given to Sri Bhavani Textiles Processors Private Limited. On behalf of the farmers, we thank the government for this. We also thank Gobichettipalayam MLA KA Sengottaiyan, who raised his voice for the farmers in this matter."
Further, he said, "Earlier, a small dyeing factory had already functioned in the area since 1984. But due to non-compliance with guidelines, the power supply to the plant was disconnected. Then the plant did not operate, and its buildings were also demolished. In this context, Sri Bhavani Textiles Processors Private Limited was planning to set up a large-scale dyeing and washing plant for Rs 500 crore at the same location, keeping the old license of that plant."

1 2 3 Ranchi/Garhwa: Union minister of road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari laid foundation stones of three road projects worth Rs 1,700 crore and inaugurated seven road projects worth Rs 4,650 crore in the state on Thursday at two separate programmes held in Ranchi and Garhwa. Stating that the Centre is already working on projects worth Rs 2 lakh crore in Jharkhand, Gadkari said plans are afoot for additional projects worth Rs 1 lakh crore in the state. In Garhwa, Gadkari laid the foundation stone for Rs 1,330 crore four-lane project measuring 32 km from Chattisgarh-Jharkhand border to Gumla on NH-43. That apart, he inaugurated the Rs 1,130 crore four-lane Garhwa bypass road measuring 22.73 km on NH-75 under the Ranchi-Varanasi economic corridor. With the construction of the by-pass road from to Khajuri village (Garhwa district), the residents heaved a sigh of relief. The by-pass from Shankha village (Palamu district) to Khajuri village (Garhwa district) links about two dozen villages in Palamu and Garhwa. He also sanctioned Garhwa-Ambikapur four-lane road and few other projects worth around Rs 2,460 crore in Garhwa district. In Ranchi, too, he gave his approval to outer ring road project and widening of Ranchi-Muri Road. "More projects worth Rs 75,000 crore are in the offing, under various stages," he said. Setting timelines for a few ongoing projects, he said that the Rs 36,000-crore Varanasi-Ranchi-Kolkata corridor will be over by March 2028. Hence, we must continue to get those funds to address the challenges in this region," he said, adding that these regions are rain shadow area and needs special assistance to stop migration and further development projects. Gadkari advised the minister to get an official order passed from the govt and he will help in building over 1,000 ponds through NHAI free of cost like he did in Vidharbha (Maharashtra) to tide over water crisis in farm dominated areas.

The girl Vasamsetti Satya Yaswanthi from Komidivarilanka village of Ambajipeta mandal, constituency called on the Minister at his camp office in Ramachandrapuram today and explained her plight to him. She lost her father few years back, and her mother, a daily labour, was helping her study with utmost difficulty. Moved by her plight the Minister immediately paid her Rs.20,000 cheque and assured her to bear the expenditure for her future studies also . He said poverty should not come in the way for her aim for higher studies and bright future . Spy planes, minesweepers: Nod for 1L crore purchases
AI generated image for representation NEW DELHI: The defence ministry gave preliminary nod Thursday to three major acquisition projects and seven smaller ones, collectively worth over Rs 1 lakh crore, ranging from specialised spy aircraft and advanced minesweepers to quick-reaction air defence missiles and underwater autonomous vessels. The biggest project to get "acceptance of necessity" (AoN), which is just the first step in the long-winded procurement process, was for the indigenous construction of 12 mine countermeasure vessels for around Rs 44,000 crore, which will take almost a decade, sources told TOI. These specialised warships, each with a displacement of 900-1,000 tonne, will be capable of detecting, tracking and destroying underwater mines laid by enemy forces to choke harbours and ports, disrupt shipping and maritime trade. QRSAMs designed to intercept hostile fighters These specialised warships are crucial amid the expanding maritime collaboration between China and Pakistan. At present, the Navy makes do with just "clip-on mine countermeasure suites" mounted on some ships to plug the major capability gap. The second big project was the Rs 36,000 crore procurement of the new quick-reaction surface-to-air missile (QRSAM) systems developed by DRDO , with three regiments for the Army and three squadrons for IAF. Overall, the Army Air Defence has projected a requirement of 11 such regiments. These highly mobile QRSAMs, designed to intercept hostile fighters, helicopters and drones at ranges up to 30km, will add to the country's multilayered air defence network that played a crucial role in thwarting multiple waves of Turkish-origin drones and Chinese missiles launched by Pakistan during Operation Sindoor May 7-10 hostilities. The third major project was for three ISTAR (intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition & reconnaissance) planes, designed to identify and help target high-value enemy targets on ground with greater precision and accuracy by fighter jets & missiles, for around Rs 10,000 crore. These aircraft will be equipped with a wide array of indigenous sensors & systems developed by DRDO, like synthetic aperture radars, electro-optical and infrared sensors, for gathering "actionable intelligence" in real time on enemy infrastructure, build-ups and movements. Another project granted AoN was for semi-submersible autonomous vessels for ISR missions. They will be acquired under 'Make-II' category project, where prototype development is funded by the industry. AoNs were accorded for procurement of armoured recovery vehicles, electronic warfare systems and tri-Service integrated common inventory management system for better supply chain management.
