7 of the most thrilling TV shows to watch for Shark Week
First observed in 1988, Shark Week sees the Discovery Channel – and other broadcasters in later years – dedicating a week of TV programming to sharks.
Aimed at deconstructing and debunking myths about sharks, Shark Week also aims to raise awareness of conservation efforts around the world and is running from July 20 to July 26 in 2025.
The initiative has drawn some criticism over the years for featuring less and less non-fiction material, but Shark Week still remains popular with Discovery Channel subscribers and shark fans.
For many fans who've watched Shark Week's programming since they were children, the annual event remains 'the favourite part of summer' for them.
Not all Discovery Channel content is available in the UK, however – so here's how you can observe Shark Week your own way from your living room this July.
What better place is there to begin Shark Week 2025 by spending time with Robert Irwin, the son of the late conservationist and TV presenter Steve Irwin.
Steve tragically died at the age of 44 while filming a documentary about the Great Barrier Reef in 2006, back when son Robert was just three years old.
Now, Robert is continuing his father's incredible legacy, focusing not just on wildlife protection and conservation, but on educational TV documentaries as well.
His documentary film Crikey! It's Shark Week debuted in 2021 and is available to watch in the UK during Shark Week with a subscription to Discovery Plus.
Crikey! It's Shark Week sees Robert – who was 18 at the time – follow in his father's footsteps and come face to face with a great white shark for the very first time.
The British 2017 documentary Of Shark and Man, directed by David Diley, is one of the most acclaimed and celebrated documentaries to focus on sharks.
Available on AppleTV and Amazon Video, Of Shark and Man sets up shop in the Shark Reef of Fiji in the South Pacific Ocean – it eventually won five international documentary awards.
The film follows David as he leaves his life in northern England to swim with sharks in the South Pacific, with one stunt finding David swimming among 60 bull sharks.
It became so popular among fans that it ended up as one many documentaries made by David that analysed the relationship between humans and sharks.
UK Film Review gave it five stars, adding: 'Not only is it a remarkable film, showcasing a side to sharks we've never seen, it's an entertaining, grounded and informative experience.'
Available on Discovery Plus, 2018 documentary film Sharkwrecked follows two shark experts pushing themselves to dangerous limits and facing up against the ultimate challenge.
Staging what it would be like to be shipwrecked in the middle of the ocean with only 48 hours of supplies, Sharkwrecked sees two shark obsessives stranding themselves in dangerous conditions.
The synopsis on Discovery Plus explains what goes down: 'Paul de Gelder and James Glancy take on a dangerous new challenge.
'They spend two days marooned in the ocean with no food or water, [surrounded by] some of the most dangerous sharks in the world.'
A brand new death-defying reality series started earlier this month, with Shark! Celebrity Infested Waters available to stream on ITVX.
If you've ever wondered what it would be like to watch big-name celebrities like Helen George, Lucy Punch and Rachel Riley share the sea with a bunch of sharks, then look no further.
The six-part series will see seven celebrities pushed to the limit as they face one of humanity's biggest fears, all while trying to help dispel the stigma surrounding the prehistoric creatures.
The Bahamas might be a luxury holiday destination, but they're also home to more than 40 different species of shark, earning it the title of 'Shark Capital of the World'.
The famous faces jetting off to The Bahamas get some help from the show's shark experts, but they still have to face parts of the challenge alone.
Sadly not introduced by David Attenborough, Shark proved the BBC are still among the very best when it comes to producing and delivering the very best nature documentaries.
From 2015, Shark was a three-part series made in conjunction with the UK arm of the Discovery Channel – it's narrated by Withnail & I actor Paul McGann.
While all three episodes aren't available on BBC iPlayer, the final episode – titled Beneath the Surface/Facing Extinction – is available for shark fans to stream.
The BBC's synopsis reveals the following: 'A look at how an international team of scientists is trying to change people's perceptions of sharks.
'Their research is revealing that sharks can be sociable and intelligent, and they could even help solve some of the toughest medical challenges of the 21st century.'
It concludes: 'However, the breakthroughs come at a time when many sharks face extinction. Science may now be the only way to save them.'
Sticking with the BBC, Why Sharks Attack is a 2023 documentary film that arrived as part of the Why…? series that also focused on plane crashes and building collapses.
The documentary was made in response to three shark attacks that took place of the coast of Egypt across 2022 and 2023, during which three people were killed.
The BBC explain: 'After three recent fatal shark attacks in Egypt, this film investigates whether pressure from human activity and climate change is altering the behaviour of sharks.'
Narrated by Priyanga Burford, the series takes a look at different types of sharks around the world and the behaviours they've developed in order to keep surviving.
Available on Apple TV, Shark Lockdown tracks how hunting patterns changed for sharks during Covid-19 lockdowns, with the presenting risking their safety in more ways than one. More Trending
A synopsis of the documentary provided by Amazon Video states: 'Expert Kina Scollay climbs inside a mobile dive cage – the 'Snackbox' – on a quest to find monster shark 747 and solve an even bigger mystery.'
The most shocking images come when Kina descends into the ocean near New Zealand and is almost immediately confronted by one of the biggest sharks in the world.

Apple TV says: 'In the waters off New Zealand, female great white sharks can be over 20ft long.'

Emmerdale's John unearths Robert's damning secret involving returning character
Emmerdale's John Sugden found something out about his brother Robert Sugden on the ITV soap on Wednesday, amid the latter issuing a plea to a returning character The latest episode of Emmerdale revealed what 'dirt' John Sugden will have over his sibling Robert Sugden amid their ongoing feud. Robert's determination to expose his sibling's dark ways, with no one believing him, left him with a target on his back on Wednesday night. John had unearthed the fact his brother was trying to find out what he was hiding, but not even Robert knows for certain the horrifying truth. He's clocked on to the fact that John is always there to save the day, and he's suspicious over recent events concerning former mother-in-law Chas Dingle, and villager Jacob Gallagher. Robert has also figured out that John may have killed Nate Robinson and then framed Owen for the crime, while he has no proof. With Robert's mental health spiralling, John feigned concern and asked doctor Liam Cavanagh to have a word with his brother. Playing the doting brother who is being targeted for no reason, John wasted no time in telling their sister Victoria about Robert's attempts to get into his phone as well as badmouth him to others. Victoria, already concerned about Robert given his prison trauma and him having nightmares, feared he was spiralling and taking it out on John. But if only they all knew the truth. Robert was annoyed by Liam's arrival, and soon returned to calling out John. Fishing for information on him, he kept talking about Liam's colleague not being honest and truthful, claiming he had something to hide. John was nervous as he listened into the chat via a listening device he'd secretly planted in the house. He heard Robert claim he would get to the bottom of what John was up to, with him heard saying "something wasn't right with him". Robert then unintentionally gave John something to have over him though, as returning character and new villain Ray headed back to the village to track Robert down. Ray debuted a few months ago, and Robert secretly did a drugs deal with him. He stole Lewis Barton's weed that was growing on Moira Dingle's farm and sold it to Ray. Ray was so impressed he wanted more, but Robert made it clear it was a one-off deal, and there was no more cannabis. Ray didn't believe him though, and it emerged it was Ray who sent Dylan and another masked intruder to the farm to look for the crops. Of course they found nothing, and unfortunately they were caught, leading to Dylan being attacked - while Joe Tate got the blame. But Ray wasn't done, and on Wednesday he returned to the show and the village, looking for Robert. Tracking him down, he asked Robert for another batch, admitting what happened at the farm. Robert pleaded with him, saying business was over and there was honestly no more drugs. So when Ray hinted he would ask Lewis, or Ross and Mack, instead, Robert panicked. Realising it would get out that he'd stolen the drugs and sold them to Ray, he begged the dealer to stay quiet as otherwise "he was finished". What Robert didn't realise though was that as he confessed to the theft and his deal with Ray, John was listening into the entire chat via the device and now knows his secret. John now has dirt on Robert that could land him in trouble, both with the law and with the village. So what will John do with this information, and is it enough to get Robert to back off? Emmerdale fans 'work out' secret murder - but John's not the killer
Emmerdale fans think there's been a secret murder on the ITV soap by someone who has recently been onscreen, but John Sugden could be innocent of the crime this time There's a new murder theory being shared by Emmerdale fans, after a recent death on the ITV soap. A character named Owen was recently killed off on the show, left to die by killer John Sugden who then framed him for Nate Robinson's murder. Owen was later found dead with his 'confession' believed by the police. It comes months on from fans finding out John had accidentally killed Nate back in September before dumping his body in the lake. After the body was found a few months ago, John took action to cover his tracks before recently setting up Owen as the killer. Robert Sugden, John's brother, was surprised to find out Owen's guilt given weeks ago the newcomer drugged him on a date. So when he realised John had been at Owen's home the day before he was found dead it set off alarm bells. Owen's sudden death and the confession all happening just after the spiking too left Robert suspicious. The John connection has now left him convinced he is to blame and has framed Owen, cos Robert knows for a fact that Owen didn't kill Nate. Robert knows this because he met with Owen's brother Steve, and found out Owen had an alibi for the night Nate left the village, or was believed to have. So the day Nate died, his 'killer' Owen was with Steve committing a crime. Steve told Robert the pair had been doing something illegal, which is why he had not come forward. He had no intention of clearing his brother's name, even threatening Robert despite it being proof Owen was not the killer. But some fans think there's even more to the tale, and that there's a different reason why Steve wants to stay quiet. Seeing his dark behaviour and some of the comments he made about Owen to Robert, fans think he might have caused Owen's death and made it look like an accident. Fans are speculating that something happened with the crime they were committing, and maybe Owen went to spill the beans or Steve got greedy with whatever payment there may have been. Taking to social media one fan said: "I think Steve killed Owen. No other logical reason for him to threaten Robert and say 'stop digging.' "If the police realise Owen didn't commit suicide, then they will question the validity of the suicide note and start listening to Robert." Another fan said: "Interesting theory! We have been shown that Steve was grossed out by Owen's sexual orientation, that dislike could very well go much deeper." A third fan commented: "Maybe they got a lot of money from a dodgy job but Steve didn't want to split it with Owen so he killed him so he'd keep all the money, and also because they were related maybe Owen's death would lead to Steve inheriting all of Owen's stuff." Another fan said: "Maybe Owen threatened to tell someone what they'd done and his brother had to silence him. Something just feels off - WHY would you let your brother be framed for murder if you KNOW he can't have done it?"
