James Gunn's Superman breaks Man of Steel box office record

Express Tribune3 days ago
James Gunn's Superman has officially surpassed Zack Snyder's Man of Steel at the domestic box office, setting a new record for solo Superman films in the United States. According to Box Office Mojo, the 2025 reboot has grossed $292.4 million domestically as of July 29, overtaking the $291 million total from Snyder's 2013 installment.
Starring David Corenswet as the latest iteration of the iconic superhero, Superman serves as the launchpad for the rebooted DC Universe (DCU) under Gunn and producer Peter Safran. The film arrives after the closure of the DCEU in 2023 and represents a significant creative shift for DC Studios. Despite strong competition from summer blockbusters like Jurassic World Rebirth and The Fantastic Four: First Steps, the movie continues drawing sizable audiences.
Internationally, however, Superman has seen more modest returns, collecting $214.1 million so far, for a global total of $506.5 million. By comparison, Man of Steel earned $379 million overseas and $670.1 million worldwide. Gunn has suggested that the lower international turnout may be influenced by current political sentiment abroad, including rising anti-American attitudes.
Nevertheless, the film now holds the title of the highest-grossing standalone Superman movie in U.S. history. It has also outperformed Superman Returns (2006) and all of Christopher Reeve's Superman films in both domestic and global box office tallies. Even so, no Superman title has yet surpassed Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which still leads with $874.3 million globally.
Critically, the film has been well received. On Rotten Tomatoes, it currently holds an 83% critics score and a 91% audience rating — both higher than Man of Steel and several earlier entries. With strong word of mouth and sustained interest, Superman marks a hopeful new beginning for the DCU and its evolving cinematic future.

Brandon Sklenar transformation fuels DCU Batman casting rumors

Brandon Sklenar has ignited a wave of fan speculation after celebrity trainer Wesley Wilson shared a photo of the actor looking intensely ripped. The image, posted on Instagram, shows Sklenar in top form, with Wilson praising his transformation: 'Training one of my best friends for his biggest role yet has been a f**king blast.' That caption—and Sklenar's visible transformation—have prompted intense speculation online that he may be preparing to portray Batman in James Gunn's rebooted DC Universe. The actor hasn't denied the growing rumors. Earlier this year, he reshared Batman fan art featuring himself, and recently, when a fan commented on his post about the comic book fandom wanting him as Batman, he simply responded with a bat emoji. Not a confirmation, but certainly not a denial—just enough to keep fans guessing. The timing could be ideal. With David Corenswet cast as Superman and Millie Alcock confirmed as Supergirl, the DCU's new Batman remains unannounced. Gunn has already dismissed the idea of casting an older Batman, likely ruling out 47-year-old Jensen Ackles. Despite his strong fan backing and gritty performance in Amazon Prime's Countdown, age may be a factor. At 34, Sklenar sits closer in age to Corenswet (31), and his recent roles suggest he's ready for a high-profile franchise. After appearing alongside Harrison Ford in 1923, starring with Blake Lively in It Ends With Us, and earning critical praise for Drop (2025), his momentum is undeniable. Although Sklenar was not included in a recent Fortress of Solitude fan poll for Batman, which was topped by Ackles, Alan Ritchson, and Scott Adkins, his name is now trending. If the buzz continues, it wouldn't be surprising if James Gunn is already considering him for the role.

Superman is 2025's top superhero movie, giving DC's Supergirl a major box office boost

James Gunn's Superman has become 2025's highest-grossing superhero movie, a major win for DC Studios and a promising boost for the DCU's next big release—Supergirl. According to Box Office Mojo, Superman has earned $510.8 million globally so far, outperforming all of Marvel's 2025 entries, including Captain America: Brave New World ($415.1M), Thunderbolts ($382.3M), and The Fantastic Four: First Steps ($241.3M and still in theaters). Superman, starring David Corenswet, serves as the official launch of the DCU's Chapter One. Its impressive box office performance is critical not only for franchise momentum but also for upcoming projects tied to this universe. One major beneficiary is Supergirl, set for a 2026 release. Milly Alcock's Supergirl made a surprise cameo in Superman, revealing her as the owner of Krypto and teasing her solo storyline. This early introduction has sparked strong interest in her character, making her the most connected DCU hero after Superman. Adding further firepower to Supergirl's box office potential is Jason Momoa, who joins the cast as Lobo, a fan-favorite bounty hunter. Momoa's proven track record includes Aquaman ($1.15B) and Minecraft ($955.1M), establishing him as a reliable box office draw. With Superman soaring above expectations, Supergirl is now well-positioned to ride that momentum. Between Alcock's debut, strong franchise connections, and Momoa's star power, Supergirl could become the next major hit for the revitalized DCU.
