Perseverance is key to success, Union Minister tells women entrepreneurs
Entrepreneurship is not only about ideas but also about endurance. The road is paved with sleepless nights, tough decisions and relentless hustle, said Union Minister of State for Rural Development and Communications Pemmasani Chandrasekhar.
Speaking after inaugurating ADITRI (Advancing Development and Transformation in Rural India), a rural entrepreneurship initiative launched by the Directorate of Entrepreneurship and Innovation at SRM University-AP, on Saturday, Mr. Chandrasekhar addressed the women entrepreneurs there.
'Preparing to persevere through every obstacle with unwavering determination is the key to success,' he said.
The event was marked by the launch of 100 women-led startups. The Union Minister handed over machinery and certificates to women entrepreneurs and lauded the SRM University for extending support to them.
Referring to the government schemes and initiatives such as MUDRA, Lakhpati Didi, Start-up India and Stand-up India and digital platforms such as Facebook, YouTube and WhatsApp, he said women entrepreneurs should learn the nuances and grow in their respective areas.
'Today, women can access knowledge on packaging, selling and pricing on their mobile phones,' he said, adding that self-help groups (SHGs) offered both community support and a path to income.
SRM-AP Vice-Chancellor Manoj K. Arora, Pro-Vice-Chancellor Ch. Satish Kumar, Registrar R. Premkumar, Deans, Directors and members of the faculty, staff and students were present.

Gadkari steps in as flooded RuBs trigger public outcry
Nagpur: Faced with years of neglect and bureaucratic buck-passing over the maintenance of waterlogged underbridges, Union minister for road transport and highways and Nagpur MP Nitin Gadkari directed the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) to immediately take over Manish Nagar and Somalwada RuBs from MahaMetro. Both structures have drawn criticism from motorists, particularly the Manish Nagar RuB, which gets flooded even with a brief drizzle. The intervention comes as citizens grow increasingly frustrated over near-daily waterlogging across key RuBs in the city. The NMC, which long refused to assume responsibility for the MahaMetro-constructed RuBs, has now relented under Gadkari's orders. "On the lines of Narendra Nagar RuB constructed by state PWD, the NMC will now maintain both Manish Nagar and Somalwada RuBs," confirmed chief engineer Manoj Talewar, adding that the takeover process has begun. The latest move puts the spotlight on the worsening condition of RuBs across Nagpur. Besides the Anand Talkies RuB — which remains dry thanks to proper elevation planning by the NMC — every other underbridge, including Cotton Market, Gaddigodam, Loha Pul, Mankapur, Mehdibagh, and Narendra Nagar, continues to experience severe waterlogging during the monsoon. In fact, many stay waterlogged even on dry days, say regular commuters. Currently, the Mankapur RuB is maintained by NHAI and Mehdibagh by the Indian Railways, while the NMC manages the sump and pump system at Narendra Nagar. Despite this multi-agency setup, none of the departments succeeded in offering a permanent solution. To complicate matters, four new RuBs are being built in central and east Nagpur under the Central Road Infrastructure Fund Scheme. Unless proper drainage planning is incorporated, experts fear they may add to the list of daily hazards. What was meant to be an infrastructure upgrade for smoother commutes has now turned into a public safety concern. With water levels often rising above knee-deep during rains, motorists face stalled vehicles, skidding, and damaged engines — sometimes with life-threatening consequences. If Gadkari's intervention results in systematic upgrades, it may finally mark the beginning of accountability and effective flood management for the city's crumbling underbridge network.

Manimajra's 24x7 water supply project hits turbulence; MC internal report, Chandigarh BJP chief flag major flaws
1 2 3 4 Chandigarh: What was once hailed as a flagship initiative under the 'Viksit Bharat' vision is now under intense scrutiny. The ambitious 24x7 water supply pilot project in Manimajra, inaugurated with much fanfare by Union home minister Amit Shah in Aug 2024, has hit turbulent waters. Amid growing concerns and political pressure, Punjab governor and UT administrator Gulab Chand Kataria is set to convene a high-level meeting to dissect the project's faltering progress. The move comes in the wake of a strongly worded letter from Chandigarh BJP president Jatinder Pal Malhotra to the Union home minister, expressing alarm over the project's execution. Sources confirm that the ministry of home affairs has since forwarded the letter to the UT Administrator, prompting urgent administrative attention. The project, spearheaded by Chandigarh Smart City Limited and executed through a Rajasthan-based agency, was envisioned to revolutionize water supply in Manimajra — transitioning from intermittent to round-the-clock pressurized water delivery, complete with smart metering and automated control systems. But the reality on the ground paints a starkly different picture. A confidential internal report by the Engineering Department of the Municipal Corporation has laid bare a series of alarming discrepancies: No zone in Manimajra has achieved 24x7 pressurized water supply; pressure reducing valves (PRVs) and variable frequency drive (VFD) pumping systems remain non-operational; major lapses in the construction of underground reservoirs, pumping stations, and the rollout of the SCADA automation system; and much-touted smart water meters are yet to be fully deployed. The project was awarded through an e-tender at a staggering Rs 165.86 crore, split into capital expenditure (capex) — Rs 74.56 crore — and operational expenditure (OPEX) — Rs 91.29 crore. Despite the scale of investment, the outcomes have been underwhelming — a fact that has not gone unnoticed by local leadership. Malhotra has reportedly warned that the project's failure is damaging the BJP's image and undermining the Prime Minister's development agenda. What's Next? With the spotlight now firmly on the project, the upcoming meeting chaired by Kataria is expected to be a turning point. Malhotra's letter to Shah In a letter to Amit Shah, Chandigarh BJP president Jatinder Pal Malhotra said, "In August 2024, a project was inaugurated by you, in the presence of administrator Gulab Chand Kataria, chief secretary Rajeev Verma, and other dignitaries, for 24-hour water supply with proper pressure for all floors. The funds amounting to Rs 75 crore were allocated for the project under the smart city mission. The reality of this project clearly reflects that the whole project has collapsed, and nobody is held accountable and responsible for this wastage of Rs 75 crore. Sir, on one side, taxes are being imposed on the public, and on the other, Rs 75 crore have been wasted. Certainly, there are policy lapses or a lack of accountability in the system of administration of UT Chandigarh. The media reports are causing grave damage to our reputation in public at large and are also not in tune with our visionary Prime Minister's dream of VIKSIT BHARAT: 2047. Your good self is thus humbly requested to intervene in the matter and call for a detailed inquiry report on the same."

Centre committed to invest in Bengal's railway infrastructure: Vaishnaw
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Saturday said the Centre is committed to investing in the railway sector in West Bengal and has significantly increased allocations as part of its broader push to boost connectivity, cargo movement and support micro and small enterprises in the state. Speaking at the inauguration of the Udyami Sammelan Mela 2025 at the National Library in Kolkata, Vaishnaw said the railway budget for Bengal has seen a sharp rise from around Rs 3,000 crore under the previous regime to around Rs 14,000 crore now. The minister outlined upcoming projects, including the development of the New Jalpaiguri-Kolkata Rail Corridor to world-class standards, a statement said. "A master plan has been prepared for new railway lines, Gati Shakti cargo terminals, and the upgradation of the chicken neck corridor to a four-line network," he said, adding that the Sivok-Siliguri-New Mal Junction section will also be linked to the main corridor. Vaishnaw, the railway minister, said that over the last 11 years, India has added around 35,000 km of new railway tracks, including 5,300 km in 2023-24 alone, while also adding 1,400 locomotives and 35,000 wagons annually to the network. He emphasised India's need for "economic decolonisation" and simplification of systems to promote ease of doing business. During the day, the minister flagged off the inaugural Purulia-Bankura-Howrah MEMU train via Masagram and said the Centre's focus is to expand railway coverage besides modernising the sector. He flagged off the train through video conferencing from Santragachi railway station in the state. Vaishnaw said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's focus is to expand railway coverage, modernise railways with technology, infrastructure and amenities and improve passenger experience. Around 1.2 million railway staffers are tirelessly working towards realising this dream, he said. The Purulia-Bankura-Howrah MEMU train via Masagram would boost rural, local and regional rail connectivity and passenger convenience, he said. The service is set to improve daily commute options for thousands of passengers across Purba and Paschim Bardhaman, Purulia, Bankura and surrounding districts. By connecting key junctions in West Bengal, the train will not only ensure faster travel but also facilitate economic activity, he said. He also said during the 2014-25 period, Kolkata Metro added 41 km to its network, compared to only 28 km between 1972, when the project started, and 2014. Underlining challenges related to land acquisition and traffic permission for Kolkata Metro and other railway projects, Vaishnaw urged the state government "to rise above other things for the benefit of people". He referred to such challenges on the Kolkata Metro route at Kidderpore, Chingrighata and Beleghata area and also to the Bishnupur-Tarakeshwar rail route. Vaishnaw lauded the ongoing development of the Santragachi railway station as an Amrit Bharat station, especially the progress of work in the last one and a half years. The Amrit Bharat Station Scheme is a long-term plan to improve railway stations across India in a step-by-step manner. "The station is being modernised as a passenger and environment-friendly facility. It has been designed to handle over 50,000 passengers daily by 2063, in addition to ensuring time-bound train movement," he said. Union Minister of State for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal, who also attended the Udyami Sammelan Mela, said the government is working on simplifying the IT Act to match the pace of digital innovation. He acknowledged the long-pending demand for a permanent circuit bench of the Calcutta High Court in Siliguri, adding that the matter is under active consideration.
