BURGESS Q&A: Ashton, building consistency and leaving Wembley in the future
With a Challenge Cup Final date with Hull KR now looming large on the horizon, minds may naturally wander towards that big occasion next month.
However, head coach Sam Burgess insists there are no thoughts of Wembley just yet with three important Super League matches to play before then, starting with Sunday's trip to Wakefield Trinity.
The Wire boss sat down with the Warrington Guardian's Wire reporter Matt Turner to discuss the days and weeks ahead, and he also gave more detail about the cruel, season-ending blow for star winger Matty Ashton.
Here is everything asked and answered in our exclusive Q&A…
MT: I guess given the awful news surrounding Matty Ashton's injury, the first question has to be simply 'how is he?'
SB: It's a really tragic injury for him and he's obviously upset about his position, so we've given him some time off to get himself away to the sun.
We're all absolutely gutted for Matty and I think most rugby league fans are.
He brings a lot to the game and is really exciting to watch. Since I've been working with him, I feel his game's been brilliant.
He's cemented himself as one of the international wingers and I think we were all looking forward to seeing him have a go against the Aussies.
One thing with Matty is he'll find a way to be positive about it and learn something when the time comes, but we can't hide the fact we're all gutted for him.
We'll move on as a group and we'll get over it as we've got some great players to come in, but we're all gutted.

MT: When did it actually happen, the injury?
SB: He did it in the fifth minute, when he held Darnell McIntosh up over the line.
It was such an unfortunate injury – it was a contest in the air and he landed on his leg.
MT: Did it shock you to discover the full extent of what he'd done because it looked like he was getting ready to come back on?
SB: We were all shocked – we initially thought it was a medial and that would have been a couple of weeks.
Then he was saying there was some clicking in his knee, which is never a good sign.
He was going to come on for the last 20 minutes when Josh Thewlis got injured – he kept telling me he was ready to go back on but I just had a feeling he wasn't great.
That said, I didn't have a clue it would be as bad as it was.

MT: You'll obviously have a group of players in there who will be desperate to play at Wembley, but that's three weeks away.
With that in mind, is your message that there's places in the team out there to be grabbed in these next few weeks?
SB: As we've seen, a lot can change on the spot.
We're not even worrying about Wembley just yet – we're trying to get our best team on the field at Wakefield, get a good performance in and then we'll re-assess again.
With the way it's been going for us, we're touching a bit of wood every week and then re-assessing to go again.
Wembley is three games away and I don't really want to think about it yet because the team will be different by then, just based on circumstance.
We'll cross that bridge when we get there.
MT: How do you assess where you sit in Super League at the moment as you pick up the season again?
Being ninth obviously won't have been part of the plan but looking at the table, it's still very open?
SB: I'm not too worried about where we sit – I'm looking at our performances.
We're not hiding from the fact we haven't been as consistent as we'd like but we've identified a couple of things to have a look at that we think has played a part in that.
What we're starting to see now is some more consistent performances in terms of markers that we look for.
Although we had a couple of losses leading into the semi, we really felt our game was moving in the right direction.
We've struggled with inconsistency in the team but we've enjoyed the challenge and have figured out different ways to play.
No doubt once we start stringing a few games together and a bit of momentum comes our way, the ball will bounce our way soon enough.
We understand that it's a long year and nothing is won or lost at this time of year in the league.
MT: You lost to Wakefield in Round Four but a lot of water has gone under the bridge between now and then.
How do you assess how they've built their season since then?
SB: They've been great and have been exciting to watch.
They really test out your defensive line so we've got to be on our game, there's no doubt about it.
We're looking forward to the challenge again because they did beat us here and were the far better side on the day.
We'll have our work cut out.

Keenan Allen visiting with Chargers as rumors of possible reunion swirl
It looks like Keenan Allen and the Chargers could be headed toward a reunion. Allen, 33, will be visiting his former home on Friday, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. There is also 'mutual interest' between Los Angeles and the six-time Pro Bowler, per Pelissero. Allen, who was drafted by the Chargers in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft, spent his first 11 seasons with the club before being dealt to the Bears ahead of last season. 3 Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Keenan Allen celebrates after catching a pass in the 4th quarter. Charles Wenzelberg / New York Post During his tenure with the Chargers, Allen racked up 904 receptions and 59 touchdowns with a total of 10,530 receiving yards. The California alum also won the Comeback Player of the Year award for the 2017 season after missing the majority of the previous season with a torn ACL. Allen is looking to come back from a down season with the Bears, where the receiver put up just 744 receiving yards on 70 receptions, his lowest for his entire career in a full season. 3 New York Jets linebacker Neville Hewitt, bottom, pulls on the jersey of Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Keenan Allen after a catch by Allen during the second half of an NFL football game Sunday, Nov. 22, 2020, in Inglewood, Calif. AP The rumors between the potential homecoming accelerated following the abrupt retirement of Chargers receiver Mike Williams in July. Williams — who was just 30 years old when he announced his retirement — spent his first seven seasons with the Chargers before signing a one-year contract with the Jets before the 2024 season. The Clemson alum's tenure with the Jets was unimpressive, putting up just 166 receiving yards in nine games before being dealt to the Steelers midway through last season. 3 Jets wide receiver Mike Williams (18) practices in Florham Park, NJ. Bill Kostroun/New York Post Williams previously signed with the Chargers in March, where he was then put on the team's Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list ahead of training camp. Following the news of Williams' retirement, Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert was supportive of the wideout, saying that he wanted to 'be there for him.' 'I want what's best for Mike. He's always been there for us and we're going to be there for him,' Herbert told reporters then. 'It's obviously a tough situation, I've got so much respect for him as a teammate, as a friend, as a receiver, as a player and the man that he is. 'We're going to be there for him however we can help,' Herbert added. 'Football at the end of the day is a game and there's more to life than just football. I'm just hoping for the best for him.'

Dagnall double as St Helens dominate Castleford
Betfred Super League St Helens (28) 40 Tries: Percival, Dagnall (2), Feldt, Clark, Robertson, Sailor Goals: Feldt (6) Castleford (0) 0 Owen Dagnall continued his remarkable start to life in Super League with two tries as St Helens strengthened their play-off chances by hammering Castleford Tigers. The 19-year-old made it seven tries in eight games, capping a hit-and-miss Saints display at the Totally Wicked Stadium with a brilliant solo effort for his second. Saints made it five wins from their past six games by streaking away in the first half as tries from the returning Mark Percival, Dagnall, Kyle Feldt, Daryl Clark and a stunning length-of-the-field effort from Harry Robertson blew the visitors away. The second half was littered with Saints errors, while Cas improved, but Dagnall fired it up with a terrific second try, with Tristan Sailor adding another to make it one win in six for the Tigers. The win means Saints leapfrog Leeds Rhinos into fourth place on points difference. Saints needed to hit back after the five-match winning streak which had re-ignited their season was ended by a home loss to Leigh Leopards in their last outing, and struggling Castleford were easy meat. Percival missed that defeat with illness but announced his return with a fine run on to Moses Mbye's pass to streak over, and Dagnall quickly added a second try when Sailor's chip over the defence bounced kindly for him. The one-way traffic continued as Sailor broke through and flipped a pass out of the back of his hand for Feldt to score, and then Clark was allowed to scoot over from the base of a scrum by some slack defence. Cas finally put together an attack but Josh Simm was denied a try when video referee Liam Rush spotted a foot in touch, and when the Tigers attacked again, it led to Saints' fifth try as Chris Atkin's kick was seized by Robertson, who then sprinted from deep in his own half to go over. The bubbling atmosphere inside the stadium went flat as Saints took their foot off the accelerator, symptomatic of their in-and-out season, but Dagnall fired them up again by carving through a gap, and then launching an ambitious kick for the corner which he somehow reached first and gleefully dived on for his second try. Castleford cracked again and two minutes later Sailor capped a fine game by supporting a break by Ignatius Paasi and easing over the line for a try to which Feldt added his sixth conversion. St Helens: Sailor; Feldt, Robertson, Percival, Dagnall; Lomax, Mbye; Walmsley, Clark, Lees, Sironen, Whitley, Knowles. Interchanges: Paasi, Wingfield, Delaney, Burns. Castleford: Rooney; Simm, Cini, Senior, Djeukessi; Asi, Atkin; Singleton, Lawler, Amone, Stimson, Mellor, Westermann. Interchanges: Wood, Griffin, Robb, Hall. Referee: Aaron Moore.

Leigh stun Warrington with dramatic late comeback
Betfred Super League Leigh (2) 20 Tries: Hanley 2, Trout Goals: O'Brien 4 Warrington (8) 16 Tries: Dufty, Jake Thewlis Goals: Sneyd 4 Leigh Leopards staged a stunning late fightback with two tries in three minutes to dent Warrington Wolves' Super League play-off hopes with a thrilling 20-16 home win. Wire bossed most of the game, and after Marc Sneyd and Gareth O'Brien successfully traded penalty kicks, the visitors led 8-2 at the break through Matt Dufty's try, laid on by a stunning run from Josh Thewlis. His younger sibling, Jake Thewlis, crossed five minutes after half-time to take Warrington 12 points clear before Umyla Hanley cut the deficit back to within a score. Sneyd's superb 46-metre penalty kick put Wolves 16-8 ahead with 10 minutes left, but Hanley crossed again before Owen Trout crashed over for the winning score with less than three minutes to go. Warrington remain four points outside the play-off places with seven rounds to go after a mystifying defeat. And a smash-and-grab fourth-straight win for Leigh - their seventh win from eight - moves them within a point of second-placed Wigan Warriors. Responding to a limp defeat at lowly Castleford Tigers last time out, Warrington showed aggression and energy from the get-go, pinning their hosts deep inside their own territory for much of the opening quarter. Yet despite their dominant play, steadfast Leigh defence limited them to just two points - Sneyd chipping over a penalty for Joe Ofahengaue's high tackle on Sam Powell, who had been held up on the line moments earlier. And having barely set an attacking boot in Wire territory, Leigh were soon level through O'Brien's penalty for late contact by Wire debutant Ryan Matterson. Yet, order was restored in the 32nd minute when Josh Thewlis, inside his own half on the right wing, cut back into the centre with a breathless run, slaloming through challenges before sending Dufty in under the posts. If there was hope for a below-par Leigh, and concern for Wire, it was that just one score separated the sides going into the second half. Sneyd slotted a second penalty before George Williams' superb kick down the left wing bounced kindly for Jake Thewlis to collect and cross for his eighth Super League try of the season. Leading 14-2 with 15 minutes left, Dufty had a second score - and a potential decider - overturned by the video referee following a Lachlan Fitzgibbon obstruction. And two minutes later, and having barely troubled the Warrington line, Leigh were back in it when Hanley stretched out to touch down O'Brien's deflected grubber kick. O'Brien's conversion brought the Leopards back within six points, but Sneyd's dead-eye penalty from long distance again took the visitors two scores clear. But once again after a Warrington score was ruled out after a video review - this time from Toby King - Hanley powered through for a second try and O'Brien's conversion cut the gap to 16-14. Wire were suddenly hanging on and buckled moments later as Trout capped his 100th Super League appearance with the winning score from close range. Leigh: Hodgson; Brand, Niu, Hanley, Charnley; O'Brien, Lam; Trout, Ipape, Ofahengaue, Halton, Hughes, Liu. Interchanges: McNamara, Tuitavake, Davis, Badrock. Warrington: Dufty; Josh Thewlis, Wrench, King, Jake Thewlis; Williams, Sneyd; Yates, Powell, Vaughan, Stone, Fitzgibbon, Currie. Interchanges: Philbin, Matterson, Wood, Walker. Referee: Liam Moore.
