EastEnders exit story in early release as legend decides it's time to move on
This article contains spoilers for tonight's episode of EastEnders, which airs at 7.30pm on BBC One or can be streamed now on iPlayer.
It's the end of an era as one Albert Square legend has decided to call last orders on their time at The Queen Vic.
We are, of course, referring to the iconic Linda Carter (Kellie Bright), who has chose to move on in the wake of her mum Elaine Knight's (Harriet Thorpe) selfish and irresponsible behaviour.
As viewers have seen over the last week, in the wake of Elaine's separation from husband George (Colin Salmon), she's left the lion's share of the work to her daughter while she splashed the cash, partied and gave monetary handouts to their neighbours.
It seemed like she was determined to drive the business into the ground.
For Linda, the last straw was when Elaine served teenagers Denzel Danes (Jaden Ladega) and Joel Marshall (Max Murray) with a glass of punch each.
She was too busy focusing on George – who had told her he intended to fight for her part of the famed boozer – and didn't notice them wandering off with two jugs full.
Disaster struck when young children Bert and Ernie Moon and Raymond Dawkins got their hands on the alcohol and were hospitalised.
In today's instalment, Linda scorned her mum's careless behaviour and told her once again that their license was now at risk.
She then went to apologise to Raymond's dad Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) for what had happened to him. He urged her to consider her future, and whether she was truly able to manage.
Returning home, she sat down with son Johnny (Charlie Suff) for a similar conversation.
He wondered what she would do without running the pub, and she said that a couple of years before she and late husband Mick (Danny Dyer) moved to Walford, they'd visited a run-down establishment in Kent and realised that it wasn't something they could envisage running themselves.

Perhaps the story would've ended up happier if they had never tried.
Although the pair had built some great memories together in The Vic, there was also a lot of sadness.
She reflected on being raped by brother-in-law Dean Wicks (Matt Di Angelo), and Keanu Taylor's (Danny Walters) murder two Christmases ago. More Trending
'What if it don't feel like home anymore?' she pondered.
Later, the two went to break the news to Elaine. Linda was selling up.
But how will Elaine take the news?

BBC will air Neil Young's Glastonbury set in sudden change of schedule plans
It has been announced that Neil Young's Glastonbury performance will be aired on the BBC tonight after all. Neil Young has made a full 180 decision over his headline performance at Glastonbury, which is taking place at the Pyramid stage later tonight. In a whiplash-inducing turn of events, the BBC will in fact air the musician's performance, after it was announced earlier this week that Young had requested his set not be televised live. A BBC spokesperson said: "We are delighted to confirm that Neil Young's headline set from Glastonbury on Saturday will be broadcast live to audiences across the UK on the BBC.' Viewers will be able to watch the performance on iPlayer's Pyramid Stage stream from 10pm, as well as BBC Two and Radio 2. On-demand plans continue to be finalised, reported The Mirror. Young announced last year he would play Glastonbury in 2025, only to retract his decision upon learning of the BBC's involvement. However, he later changed his mind. BBC presenter Colin Paterson explained earlier this week: "I asked [event co-organiser] Emily Eavis what was going on and she says she does not believe that Neil Young's set will be broadcast by the BBC. "There's been all kinds of backstage wrangling and negotiations, but as things currently stand, Neil Young's headline set on Saturday night will not be broadcast by the BBC. Instead, they'll be showing Charli xcx." When Young played Glastonbury in 2009, only five songs were televised. Speaking at the time Mark Cooper, then executive producer of the BBC's Glastonbury coverage, said: 'Neil Young's career has been conducted on his own terms. They believe in the live event and retaining its mystery and that of their artist. "They have decided to make one song available online over the weekend to give a flavour of his set. That's Rockin' in the Free World and that's their decision. You probably won't find too many Neil Young performances available freely on TV or online.' In another development, fans are now fearful after his last two European shows in Bergen, Norway, and Copenhagen, Denmark, were hit with sound problems. Fans complained about a poor vocal mix during the show, and some were also unhappy that on at least one of those shows, Neil didn't have any large screens for fans to see the action from the back of the crowd. BBC bosses are said to be treading carefully after the star pulled out of the festival earlier this year citing concerns about the BBC's 'corporate control'. He said in January: 'We were told that BBC was now a partner in Glastonbury and wanted us to do a lot of things in a way we were not interested in. It seems Glastonbury is now under corporate control and is not the way I remember it being.' A BBC spokeswoman said: 'We aim to bring audiences as many performances as possible from the Pyramid Stage, and our schedules and plans continue to be finalised, right up to and during the festival.' Young has voiced his concerns, making principled stands recently. He blocked his music from Spotify for two years, saying a podcaster on the platform had spread vaccine misinformation. Her single mum character first appeared in episodes three, with viewers getting to know her controversial ways over the following three years. Yet her time on the long running series came to a close in 1988. Linda then stunned fans as Mary and fellow EastEnders OG character George 'Lofty' Harrison reunited for an image with Dot Cotton, played by the late June Brown. It teased their comeback for a storyline in 2018 that saw another of the soap's original characters, Dr Harold Legg, get killed off The pair were also seen together in 2015 at celebrations for the 30th anniversary of EastEnders. Yet away from the soap set, Canadian born Linda looks completely different. She has traded in her character's dark, wild locks and backcombed style for a neat blonde pixie cut. Gone are the leather jackets and pale-faced make-up with heavy eyeliner combinations, with smart suits and red lippie her current uniform. Linda gave up acting - after stints on Casualty and an appearance on the Lorraine show - to work in web design and now runs a social media agency. EastEnders' Mary the Punk and Lofty to return to Albert Square in 2019 after 30 years away She often gives keynote speeches in media and has previously addressed the issue of social mobility in a speech at the House of Commons. SOAP STAR A soap source previously told The Sun how well-regarded her character was. They told us: "Lofty and Mary The Punk are two of the most memorable characters of the original set of stars. Speaking of her own time on the soap, Linda previously said: "EastEnders was my first proper family. "It gave me stability and a fantastic foundation from which to build an incredible life." Mary was seen as one of EastEnders' most controversial characters at its launch — a former punk rock groupie and drug user whose wild lifestyle put her baby at risk. Barely able to write, she couldn't look after her child without her neighbours' help and earned her living as a prostitute. She returned to Walford for two separate stints, in 2019 and 2022. Off screen, Linda previously dated co-star Nejdet Salih, who played cafe owner and minicab driver Ali Osman. 6 She has returned for two soap stints since her 1988 exit Credit: BBC Pictures' Digital Picture 6 She was last in Walford back in 2022 for Dot Cotton's funeral Credit: PA
