Over half a dozen BBMP engineers caught red-handed in bribery cases in just two weeks
The recent incident involves BBMP's Assistant Executive Engineer of CV Raman Nagar division, H.V. Yarappa Reddy, who was arrested by Lokayukta officials on June 18 while allegedly accepting a bribe of ₹10 lakh from a contractor for releasing pending bills. Reddy's bail plea was rejected by Judge KM Radhakrishna, who criticized the alarming spread of corruption in the civic body.
In a strongly worded observation, the judge stated, 'Corruption in the government system has reached uncontrollable levels, similar to a spreading plague. Common citizens suffer the most due to the greed of officials. If such cancerous behavior is not curbed, the next generation will lose faith in public institutions.'
The court also highlighted that despite orders and rules, BBMP appears to be engulfed in a bribe-for-work culture, making it nearly impossible to get work done without paying bribes. The judge emphasized that Reddy's continued custody is essential, as releasing him on bail could jeopardize ongoing investigations and lead to destruction of evidence.
According to the complaint, the accused engineer had demanded ₹10 lakh from contractor G.M. Hemant to release payments for civic works executed in CV Raman Nagar limits. Based on the complaint, Lokayukta officials laid a trap and arrested Reddy while accepting the bribe. He is currently lodged at Parappana Agrahara Central Jail.
Meanwhile, protesting various unmet demands, BBMP staff, along with employees of 10 other municipal corporations across the state, have planned a mass leave and protest on July 8 at Freedom Park. The Karnataka State Municipal Employees Federation president, A. Amrutraj, stated that essential services, including sanitation, would be suspended during the protest.
Their key demands include extension of the 7th Pay Commission benefits to municipal employees, direct grant release from the Finance Department, and amendments to cadre and recruitment rules. They are also demanding implementation of welfare schemes such as KGID, GPF, Jyothi, and Arogya Sanjeevini.

Man held for threatening worker with gun over property dispute in Guindy
CHENNAI: An Andhra Pradesh native, Madhusudhan Reddy (62), was arrested for allegedly threatening a man with a pistol during a property dispute in Guindy on Friday. Acting on a complaint by Sakareshwaran (54), a housekeeping worker, the Guindy police registered an attempt-to-murder case under the Arms Act. Reddy was nabbed and one pistol, six live rounds, a gun license and the getaway vehicle, were all seized, police said. According to police, the incident took place inside the premises of a private frim in Kannigapuram, where Reddy and another man, Ramaiyya, confronted an individual named Mahendran. When Sakareshwaran attempted to intervene, Reddy verbally abused him and pulled out a gun, threatening to shoot unless the building was vacated, police said. The duo then fled in a car. Investigation revealed the property is rented, and Reddy, a relative of the actual owner, had come demanding the tenants to vacate. The accused was remanded to judicial custody on Monday.

Kurnool: Congress State general secretary M Srinivas Reddy urged party cadres to expose the anti-people policies of the BJP-led Central government during a meeting at party office in Kurnool on Monday. The event, led by Nandyal DCC president and Kurnool district Congress in-charge J Lakshmi Narasimha Yadav, saw Reddy calling on district leaders, constituency coordinators, and heads of affiliated wings to spread this message at the grassroots level. Srinivasa Reddy criticised the BJP's governance for harming public welfare and urged every Congress worker to educate villagers about these issues. He announced plans to establish Congress party offices at the district headquarters in Nandyal and across constituency levels in the district. He directed the immediate formation of district, mandal, village, and booth committees. The Congress leader instructed constituency coordinators to collaborate with local leaders and activists to visit villages, build public trust, and demonstrate that Congress supports the people. Reddy emphasized sincere public engagement to strengthen the party's grassroots presence. DCC president J Lakshmi Narasimha Yadav stated that booth-level committees would soon be finalized across Nandyal district. In a separate meeting with Congress leaders from the Kurnool Parliament constituency, Reddy listened to their concerns and assured them that their suggestions and grievances would be conveyed to the party high command for resolution through appropriate channels.

GBA report to be tabled at Karnataka government cabinet meeting
BENGALURU: Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar said that after taking Opposition leaders into confidence, the Greater Bangalore Authority (GBA) report will be tabled at the cabinet meeting. The GBA report recommends splitting Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) into multiple corporations. Addressing the media after a meeting with officials at Vidhana Soudha on Monday regarding the GBA, Shivakumar, who is also Bengaluru Development Minister, said, 'The committee has submitted its final report on how to divide the corporation under Greater Bangalore Authority. I have instructed the committee chairman to hold discussions with opposition leaders and take them into confidence. After this, I will table the report at the cabinet meeting.' Shivakumar said they will be implementing the GBA within the existing BBMP limits and it will be expanded in the coming days. 'We should table the committee report and hold elections as soon as possible,' he said. Sharing details of the meeting he had with Home Minister G Parameshwara in connection with the Yettinahole project, Shivakumar said there were some issues with the dam in his taluk Koratagere in Tumakuru district. Shivakumar explained that they are implementing the Yettinahole project in such a way that no village gets submerged, and that locals have suggested some lakes for water storage. He said the project would be taken up after taking everyone into confidence and then placing it in the cabinet for discussion. On his New Delhi trip on Tuesday, Shivakumar said he will be meeting Union ministers, including Union Jal Shakti Minister CR Patil and hold discussions regarding forest land associated with the Yettinahole project in Tumakuru and Hassan. Replying to a question on whether he will visit the Congress party high command, he said, 'It is like a temple to us. Every time we visit Delhi, we visit the temple and offer prayers.'
