In a major crackdown on examination malpractice, the Arunachal Pradesh police have arrested 53 candidates from Haryana for allegedly using sophisticated electronic devices to cheat in a recruitment examination conducted by the Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS).
Speaking to journalists in the State capital on Tuesday (May 20, 2025), Superintendent of Police (Capital) Rohit Rajbir Singh said the examinees, who had travelled from Haryana, were found using GSM-enabled gadgets and micro earpieces during the examination held on Sunday (May 18, 2025), for the posts of lab assistants and junior secretariat assistants.
'The 29 electronic devices seized from the examinees included GSM-enabled gadgets and micro earpieces. The cheating was coordinated by a Haryana-based network that chooses centres in places like Itanagar and Dimapur (Nagaland) to reduce the risk of detection,' Mr. Singh said.
According to the police, the candidates were equipped with the devices and trained in their discreet usage once they received their admit cards. 'On the exam day, these candidates whispered the question paper code into the devices hidden in their undergarments and ears. Their external handlers relayed back the answers immediately,' he added.
All 53 individuals have been booked under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Information Technology Act, and the Public Examination (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act.
The Central Board of Secondary Education, which is involved in the conduct of the NVS exams, has been informed of the arrests. Investigation teams have been dispatched to Haryana to trace and apprehend the handlers and intermediaries involved in the operation.

Market manipulation ‘will not be tolerated,' warns SEBI Chairman Tuhin Kanta Pandey

Sebi chairman Tuhin Kanta Pandey on Saturday declared that market manipulation is 'not going to be tolerated.' His message comes a day after the regulator slapped an interim order against New York-based hedge fund manager Jane Street. Sebi on Friday barred US-based Jane Street Group from the Indian securities markets and ordered them to disgorge unlawful gains of ₹ 4,843 crore for unlawful gains — potentially the highest disgorgement ever. Jane Street allegedly manipulated the stock indices through positions taken in the derivatives segment. In its interim order, Sebi has debarred the Jane Street Group, consisting of the following companies: JSI Investments, JSI2 Investments Pvt Ltd, Jane Street Singapore Pte Ltd, and Jane Street Asia. The investigation into the activities of the group is ongoing, the news agency reported. Speaking at an event organised by the Bombay Chartered Accountants Society, Chairman Tuhin Kanta Pandey confirmed that surveillance has been increased both by the regulator and also at the exchange level to deter future misconduct. The Sebi chief made it clear that CAs must adhere to some 'non-negotiable responsibilities, which includes transparency in disclosing related party transactions, managing conflicts of interest and presenting material developments in a timely manner.' "You have a critical responsibility to ensure that corporate governance is not reduced to a checklist," he advised the CAs. While tough on manipulation, the Sebi chairman also spoke in favour of not having too much of compliance. "We are also mindful that too much information, too much compliance adds to a big compliance burden which may not actually serve the interest that we really intend to serve," he said.

Sharing obscene pictures can destroy lives: Allahabad high court

Prayagraj: Refusing to grant bail to a man accused of circulating obscene photographs of a woman on WhatsApp, the Allahabad high court observed that when such images were shared on public platforms, they had potential to "destroy lives". "Digital technology is altering the face of crime. Indecent pictures of individuals circulated on public platforms through social media can destroy lives. This is the hard social reality," a bench of Justice Ajay Bhanot said while passing the above order as observations. The accused, booked under various sections of Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita and section 67A of the Information Technology Act, 2000, was arrested in Jan this year on allegations of circulating the victim's private images on WhatsApp. He had moved high court after his bail plea was rejected by trial court in Apr 2025. Taking into account allegations against him, court noted that since some images had been recovered from him and were pending forensic examination, there was likelihood of his involvement in the crime. Court refused to grant bail, while highlighting growing menace of digital crimes and their catastrophic social impact, directed district judge to take weekly reports of progress of trial in the case. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 2025 Top Trending local enterprise accounting software [Click Here] Esseps Learn More Undo Further, the concerned deputy director, forensic science laboratory, was also directed to ensure FSL report was produced before trial court within two months. Though the court in its order dated Jun 2 dismissed the bail plea, it emphasised need for expeditious trial and directed trial court to preferably conclude proceedings within one year. In 2023, the same bench had observed that circulation of indecent videos on social media was a major menace and had stressed that in such cases, police authorities must ensure highest proficiency while conducting probes. Importantly, court had also opined that quality of investigations of UP Police in such matters was "very weak".

Repeal UAPA, withdraw cases: DMK, allies remember Stan Swamy on death anniversary

Trichy: Senior DMK leaders and their allies on Saturday squarely blamed the Modi govt for the death of 84-year-old tribal rights activist Stan Swamy in a Jharkhand prison in 2021, calling it an injustice that cannot be undone. At an event organised by the Stan Swamy People's Federation (Tamil Nadu chapter) in his hometown of Virugalur to mark his fourth death anniversary, DMK MP Kanimozhi accused the Union government of fostering a climate of fear to silence dissent. "Today, asking questions of the Union government makes you an anti-national or an urban Naxal. That's exactly what happened to Stan Swamy. He wasn't even given water in prison, but he was given names," she said. Kanimozhi added that she would move a private bill in Parliament to safeguard human rights . VCK leader Thol Thirumavalavan said Swamy was targeted for standing up for dalits and tribals, and was wrongly charged under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). "Amit Shah often says Naxalism will be abolished. For us, Naxals are people who fight for the rights of the people, who fight against the corporates, and who oppose handing over forests, natural resource-rich land, and land belonging to indigenous people to corporations," he said. "The BJP falsely accused him of plotting to kill Modi. His laptop was hacked to fabricate evidence," he claimed. Swamy's death, he said, was part of a pattern of targeting voices critical of the state. "Gauri Lankesh and Narendra Dabholkar were also killed because of their leftist leanings." School education minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi said the DMK will continue Swamy's work for the marginalised. "The Union government falsely implicated him simply for fighting for the marginalised," he said. "We (DMK) are continuing from where Stan Swamy left off in his fight to uplift the downtrodden," he said. CPM state secretary K Balakrishnan demanded that the Centre withdraw all cases filed against those named in the Bhima-Koregaon case and repeal the UAPA, calling it a law used to suppress dissent. Eight resolutions were passed at the event, including demands for a memorial for Stan Swamy, repeal of UAPA, and immediate withdrawal of cases against Bhima-Koregaon accused.
