Tragic update after tourist sucked into boat propeller and has legs torn off
Hannah Smith, 22, was on a dream holiday to the Bahamas when she was sucked into a boat's propeller and left with partially severed legs - before being airlifted to the US for surgery
The sister of a university graduate who was sucked into a boat 's propeller and had both her legs torn off has issued a heartbreaking update as she continues to fight for her life in hospital.
Hannah Smith, 22, had recently graduated with top honours for her arts degree at Miles College, Alabama, and was celebrating on a dream holiday to the Bahamas when tragedy struck. According to her family, Hannah fell from the side of a pontoon boat as it was docking and was suddenly dragged beneath the water by its propeller, leaving her with catastrophic injuries and partially severed legs.
Her life was only saved thanks to the swift action of two female passengers, who managed to grab her arm and pull her back on board. Hannah was then rushed to a local hospital before being airlifted to the US for surgery.
In a GoFundMe appeal set up to help the family cover the mounting medical bills, Hannah's sister Rachel gave a tragic update to supporters, revealing that her treatment has been plagued by complications.
She said: "Hannah suffered a few setbacks. She had to undergo additional transfusions of blood, platelets, and dialysis. Before she was taken into her scheduled surgery, she momentarily came out of her sedation.
"She was able to acknowledge our presence and encouraging words with head nods and squeezing our hands. She has underwent her fifth surgery. Please continue to keep her in your thoughts and prayers."
She remains in a critical condition, MailOnline reports. Sources told how alcohol may have played a role in the accident, with some claiming Hannah had jumped into the water.
However, her mum Tracy Smith has furiously hit back at the claims, saying: "Hannah was not intoxicated. She fell from the boat. It's hurtful to say she jumped because she did not."
Tracy also questioned why police didn't interview Hannah's best friend Brooklyn Pitre - who had witnessed the accident. "These kids work their a***s off to graduate. It was a celebratory trip," she said. "Do they have fun? Yes. Were they drunk? No. Did she jump? No. Are we completely aware of what happened? No.
"But could there have been a safety mechanism that was off, was the boat rocking, we are not 100 percent sure of that. There are so many things that could have been happening. I want to know the truth. This was a young woman, happy, celebrating her life and now she's fighting for it."
Hannah's dad Marvin said he had spoken to the doctor treating Hannah at Doctors Hospital in Nassau, and everything he told him "suggested she was coherent" and "not inebriated" when she arrived.
To celebrate her graduation on May 3, Hannah booked the luxury Caribbean cruise via the Carnival Sunrise ship. She and pal Brooklyn were on their way back from an excursion to Pearl Island - a tropical getaway known for its swimming pigs and dolphins - when she reportedly fell into the water moments after the pontoon ferry arrived on the Nassau Cruise Port at 3.55pm.
The ferry's captain immediately turned off the engine when he heard panicked cries of "she jumped off" and a loud noise coming from the boat's starboard. He then saw Hannah in the water surrounded by a pool of blood.
A witness told police that two female passengers grabbed Hannah's arm and dragged her back onto the boat before she was rushed to hospital with "serious" injuries to her legs and lower body. The 22-year-old was then flown to the US Wednesday where she has undergone further surgeries.
Hannah - a former member of the Delta Sigma Theta sorority - graduated university with a degree in communications and graphic design. Miles College said of her on Facebook: "Sending our deepest prayers and support to recent graduate Hannah Smith, Summa Cum Laude Class of 2025, who is currently in critical condition. Hannah exemplifies the Golden Standard, and we are believing in her full recovery. We ask our Miles family and extended community to keep her lifted in prayer and to support however you can."
The Royal Bahamas Police said an investigation into the freak accident was ongoing, adding in a statement: "The victim is alleged to have entered the water from a vessel she was a passenger on while it was attempting to dock. She sustained serious injuries to her lower body, caused by the vessel's propeller."

Our Brit daughter, 15, was killed by boat propeller while snorkelling in Maldives…we're forced to investigate ourselves

Jenna Chan, 15, was tragically killed by a boat propeller while on a school trip snorkelling in the Maldives. 2 Jenna Chan, 15, died in the horror snorkelling accident Credit: Collect 2 Her parents say they have been forced to investigate the cause of her death themselves Credit: GoFundMe British-Singaporean dual national Jenna was a student at St Joseph's International Institution and had been assisting the British registered charity, the Maldives Whale Shark Research Programme (MWSRP), in its research expedition. On November 8, the school girl was allegedly beckoned into the water but within minutes was "sucked under" when the engine was switched on. Her parents, Alan and Jennifer Chan, have said that more than a month after the tragic incident they are "still waiting for answers" and have "been forced to become their own investigators". As a state, the Maldives does not provide post-mortem examinations so the couple are hunting for information about their daughter's death "completely" on their own. Jennifer told The Times: 'We just want to know why Jenna died. There is no justice and we are completely on our own.' Alan flew out to the island in March to get hold of the hospital CT scans that were used by police to determine a possible cause of death. Jennifer, a surgeon, examined the pictures with her colleagues who she said were horrified "because Jenna's injuries were so horrific". The couple said they haven't even been allowed to speak to any of the teachers who were on board the boat at the time of the incident. They believe there was "no real investigation" into the accident, adding that there was a "chain of errors" throughout the excursion, they claim. According to some of the students, Jenna was reportedly instructed to enter the water while the guides tracked dolphins. At least six dead & two missing after boat capsizes on Lake Tahoe during terrifying storm causing '10-foot waves' The teenager was then allegedly "sucked up" by the engine before reportedly being brought to the nearest hotel instead of hospital. Michael Johnston, CEO of St Joseph's International Institution , previously wrote to the parents informing them that efforts to piece together what had happened to Jenna were being impeded by MWSRP. According to the school's boss, the company was "refusing" to provide access to their staff and crew for interviews. "We remain exasperated at their lack of co-operation," he said. There has been silence from the Maldivian government and all news about her has ceased Jenna's sister, Alice Chan Jenna's 17-year-old sister Alice has started a GoFundMe to raise awareness of the teen's accident and help with legal fees while the family fight for answers. The caption for the fundraiser reads: "My sister, 15 year old British-Singaporean Jenna Chan, was killed in a propeller accident during a school trip in the Maldives. "There has been silence from the Maldivian government and all news about her has ceased. "The circumstances leading to her sudden death and negligence of the company is truly shocking to our family and her teenage friends, who witnessed her death. "Please help support us during this tough time for our family and loved ones, and spread the word about her case. "All donations will go towards our fight for Jenna and protection of all future children and tourists, by providing our Maldivian lawyers with the legal fees and financial support to take more cases just like this one." We just want to know why Jenna died. There is no justice and we are completely on our own Jenna's mum, Jennifer Chan So far, £6,595 of its £10,000 has been raised. Jenna was laid to rest on November 15 in Singapore. A spokesperson for the young girl's school said that it had been "unrelenting" in its efforts to find out what happened and is still waiting on a report from the Maldivian authorities. In a statement, the school said: 'The school has been unrelenting in our efforts to piece together a full account of what happened. "The Maldivian authorities investigation is still ongoing and we have yet to receive their report. "The Maldivian authorities and MWSRP have not given us access to interview the boat captain and crew nor the MWSRP staff. These are critical pieces for all of us. 'I can confirm that the Maldives Police Service was in Singapore and with the support of the Singapore Police Force facilitated interviews with witnesses on May 27 and 28, 2025. "We continue to actively support the investigation. We have not and will not stop seeking answers and supporting those involved.' The MWSRP said: 'At the time of the incident, Ms Chan was under the supervision of two teaching staff from SJII and an experienced boat crew. "The emergency response was in accordance with our procedures and Ms Chan was taken directly to a local health centre.'

TV star accused of murdering partner 'whose head hasn't been recovered'
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video A former reality TV star has been accused of murdering her partner, who was found with his head cut off. Beauty and the Geek's Tamika Chesser, 34, was arrested on June 19 after police responded to reports of a fire at her home that she shares with boyfriend Julian Daniel Story, 39, in Port Lincoln, Australia. However, after emergency services arrived at the scene, Story's head was found dismembered on the bathroom floor of the apartment. After being arrested at her home and later charged with murder and police assault, Chesser was also charged with performing an act or omission intended to result in human remains being less likely to be found. Now, in a press conference, detective Darren Fielke has revealed that Story's head is still missing. Speaking to reporters, detective Fielke said it was 'crucial' that Story's head was returned to his family so they could hold a funeral, Australia's ABC reported. However, he added: 'We have not recovered the head of Julian Story.' CCTV images and video released by police appears to show Chesser walking three dogs and carrying a bag while seemingly wearing a hijab-style head covering. Detective Fielke is appealing for information to help track the 34-year-old's movements during the week of the alleged murder. A spokesperson for Mr Story's family thanked police and first responders for their 'compassion and professionalism during this devastating time', MailOnline reported. 'We are navigating an unimaginable loss, and your care has brought comfort amid the chaos,' the spokesperson said. 'We are also deeply grateful to our family and friends and this extraordinary community whose kindness and support have helped carry us through. Your prayers, presence, and quiet strength mean more than words can say.' According to official documents obtained by ABC, on the day of Chesser's arrest on June 19, a neighbour noticed black smoke coming from her property at roughly 1.30pm. After asking Chesser, who appeared outside, what she was doing, she said 'nothing' before taking her dogs for a walk. The neighbour then became concerned and took a bucket of water to try and put out the fire in the home. When he entered the home, he's said to have found a bundle of clothing rags and debris. Later, when police entered the home after firefighters extinguished the small fire, Story's 'severely burned and disfigured' remains were found. Chesser was apparently 'catatonic and unresponsive' as she sat in a garden chair in the rear yard after police entered the property. More Trending Police are alleging that Chesser murdered Story at roughly midnight on June 17. Chesser was refused bail in court last week and a committal hearing has been scheduled for December. The 34-year-old was the runner-up on the 2010 season of Beauty and the Geek Australia. View More » She also went on to model for a number of men's magazines, including Playboy, Ralph and FHM. Lucy Letby's life behind bars revealed – from £33-a-week to spend on chocolate & TWICE as many visits as other prisoners
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) LUCY Letby's enhanced prisoner status gives her a staggering £33 a week to spend on sweets and chocolate. The former nurse can also receive twice as many visits as other prisoners, after being fast-tracked from standard status. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 5 Lucy Letby was convicted of killing seven babies Credit: PA 5 The nurse worked at the Countess of Chester Hospital in the North-West Credit: PA 5 The nurse reportedly gets to spend £33 on sweet treats in the prison canteen Credit: PA Letby was convicted of killing seven babies and for attempting to murder another seven. She is now imprisoned in unit four of the only purpose-built private prison in the UK - HMP Bronzefield. Now an enhanced prisoner, Letby is given £33 a week to spend in the prison canteen where regular prisoners are only given £19.80. Some prisoners are bumped down to basic status as a punishment, which gives them only £5.50 per week. All prisoners are given status reviews every 28 days, but Letby has retained her enhanced position throughout her time at HMP Bronzefiled. A source told the MailOnline that the killer nurse was upgraded because of fears that she may be attacked by other inmates. The source said: 'Lucy is reserved and very quiet, she isn't really a problem with staff. 'It grates with officers though - she's committed the worst crimes possible and here she is on the enhanced unit with all the benefits that come with it. 'Again the real reason she is here is safety, she would be attacked on any other unit.' Letby reportedly has shared a cell with a former prison officer who was jailed after having sex with an inmate. I defend baby killers like Lucy Letby – bombshell new theory could FREE her but I know real truth… & it's NOT medical Linda De Sousa Abreu, Letby's cell mate, was fast-tracked to privileged status for her own protection since she is a former guard. Abreu worked at the famous prison HMP Wandsworth in London. Letby has been in police custody since November 2020 and was handed a 'whole life order' in August 2023. The inmate is the fourth woman in British history to be given no hope for parole after committing her string of chilling murders. Letby has been found to have targeted 17 babies whilst at large between June 2015 and June 2016. Her first confirmed victim was a boy born in June 2015, who, despite being born prematurely, was described as being "stable". Letby came on shift at 7.30pm that same day and, by 8.26pm, the boy's condition was "deteriorating rapidly". He died twenty minutes later after air was deliberately injected into his bloodstream. That boy's twin sister became ill just 28 hours later after "purple blotches" broke out across her body - symptoms shared with her brother. Thankfully, that baby survived. 5 Some have cast doubt on Lucy Letby's conviction Credit: Reuters However, another two babies died under the nurse's care that same month - one of which ingested air and the other being killed when air was injected into her bloodstream. More babies - including one in on 4 August and another on October 23 - died from incidents involving air while at Letby's hospital. Finally, Letby was found to have killed two more babies on June 23 and 24 2016. The killer nurse was arrested on July 3, 2018, and faced a three-year court battle before finally being jailed for life. She had been working at the Countess of Chester Hospital while at large. Despite her conviction, Letby insists that she is innocent and several high profile politicians have called for her case to be re-examined. Former health secretary Jeremy Hunt said that, although the victim's family must be at the 'forefront' of politician's minds, there is 'doubt on what actually happened'. He added: 'They are not conspiracy theories dredged up from far-flung reaches of the internet.' The former health secretary and Tory chancellor said that 14 paediatric specialists ruled that the deaths of the babies had been down to natural causes.
