MCD yet to receive Rs 820 crore announced by BJP govt, says Opposition leader Ankush Narang
NEW DELHI: The Leader of Opposition in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, Ankush Narang, on Friday alleged that a fund of Rs 820 crore announced by the government a week ago has not yet reached the civic body, pushing it into a financial crisis.
On June 6, the Delhi government announced it would release Rs 820 crore to the MCD under the Basic Tax Assignment framework. The LoP alleged that within weeks of reclaiming control of the civic agency, the BJP has triggered a fresh wave of salary delays for municipal staff—reviving the very crisis it had presided over during its previous 15-year rule. He claimed that employees across all categories are now receiving their salaries 10 to 20 days late.
He said that under the AAP government, salaries had been regularised and deposited on the first of every month. Alleging mismanagement, Narang said, 'Last week, CM Rekha Gupta claimed Rs 820 crore had been released to the MCD. But till date, not a single rupee has reached the civic body.' He further said that Delhi is now being governed by a'four-engine BJP government'—at the Centre, in the MCD, in the Delhi government, and via the Lieutenant Governor , whom the CM herself refers to as the fourth engine. 'Despite all four engines being powered by the BJP, governance is in shambles,' he said.
'Last week, the BJP announced that the Delhi government would release Rs 3,282 crore to the MCD, of which the first tranche of Rs 820 crore had been cleared. Media reports claimed the amount had been transferred, and CM Rekha Gupta herself asserted that the money had been released. Yet to this day, that Rs 820 crore has not reached the MCD's account,' the AAP leader added.
He also said the BJP had claimed that having the same party at the Centre and in Delhi would ensure better coordination and delivery. 'But even after the DMC Act was amended to give the Centre more powers, both the BJP-led central and state governments have failed. Their words and actions are miles apart,' Narang said.

Silt removal will be completed soon: Narayana
Nellore: Claiming that his government is giving top priority for drinking water, garbage cleaning and silt removal in municipalities, MA&UD Minister Ponguru Narayana has said that pending works of silt removal in irrigation canals and drains will be completed in the next two months across the State, in view of the ensuing rainy season in October and November. The Minister along with Nellore Municipal Commissioner YO Nandan and sanitary department officials, inspected the ongoing silt removal works in Pogathota area of 45th division in Nellore city on Monday. Speaking on the occasion, he said that it was decided to complete the pending silt removal works in a time-bound manner to avoid people from facing inundation problem during rainy season. Alleging that the previous YSRCP government diverted Rs 3,000 crore funds related to municipalities to other purposes, but the TDP-led coalition government is giving top priority for addressing drinking water problem, garbage cleaning, and silt removal in all urban areas in the State. Narayana has disclosed that silt removal works were taken up in 45 canals extended for 6.5 km in Nellore city and works are under progress.

Floodwater Enters Asia's Largest Sugar Mill In Haryana, Causes Rs 50 Crore Loss
New Delhi: Heavy overnight rain in Haryana caused flooding inside the Saraswati sugar mill in Yamunagar - Asia's largest compound, damaging sugar worth Rs 50 to 60 crore. According to officials, the total loss of sugar is believed to be around 40 per cent. The Yamunagar warehouse stored 2,20,000 quintals of sugar, estimated to be around Rs 97 crore. Officials of the warehouse said that rainwater, along with the overflow from a nearby drain, caused the flooding. The general manager of the Saraswati sugar mill, Rajiv Mishra, said the municipal corporation drain passes from right behind the warehouse. However, the drain was blocked due to an encroachment, causing the floodwater to enter the sugar mill. "It rained extremely heavy last night. Our security staff alerted us around midnight about water entering the premises. Due to the encroachment, the drain's level rose. Sugar, being highly hygroscopic in nature, was highly affected. We have lost around Rs 50 to 60 crore worth of sugar. But we can estimate the exact loss once we scan the entire warehouse," Mr Mishra said. According to Mr Mishra, this is the first time ever that the mill was flooded. "We have never dealt with something like this before," he said. Officials are now engaged in clearing the water at the mill using a crane. While the Saraswati sugar mill has been hit with a huge financial loss, it may not affect the local markets at large, Mr Mishra said. Experts, on the other hand, believe that if such kind of negligence by top officials continues, then it can become a big challenge not only financially but also at the level of food scarcity.
