‘Jurassic World Rebirth' Fan Premiere Screening Roars To Life With 200-Strong Crowd

Geek Culture2 days ago
Life finds a way, and so too did the Jurassic World franchise, which has grown since its 1993 beginnings to become a household name and icon of the silver screen. After three years in hibernation, the franchise roars to life once more with Jurassic World Rebirth , and Singapore fans were treated to an early encounter with the magnificent prehistoric beasts once more during an early Geek Culture fan premiere on 1 July 2025.
Hosted in partnership with UIP Singapore, the screening was met with a full-house attendance of dino-heads and Jurassic franchise fans alike, all buzzing with excitement on the next nasty monstrosity the film is bound to unleash. Even before the cinema doors opened, anticipation was at an all-time high, with ample opportunities for fans to snag a quick photo op with the venue filled to the brim with movie posters and screens.
Once seated in the hall, cheers of excitement and laughter erupted upon the sight of our host Debbi, who was all decked out in her T. rex onesie, as she took them through the pre-show activities, with a lucky few even walking away with exclusive merchandise, including five sets of Jurassic World Rebirth premiums consisting of a dyed T-shirt, beach towel, ice mold, alongside other goodies like themed tees from Goldwood.sg and 12-inch dinosaur figures from Mattel.
Picking up five years after 2022's Jurassic World Dominion , this latest chapter follows new series protagonists Zora Bennett (Scarlett Johansson, Black Widow ), who teams up with Dr. Henry Loomis (Jonathan Bailey, Wicked ) and ex-military leader Duncan Kincaid (Mahershala Ali, Moonlight ) on a mission to a prohibited island in the Atlantic, the site of its original Jurassic Park , to retrieve DNA samples while stalked by all manner of prehistoric nightmares such as the Distortus rex (nicknamed the D. rex), a six-limbed mutation of the original T. rex.
In series tradition, the film had no shortage of heart-pounding moments, as our heroes are left powerless against the various towering beasts, now mutated in never-before-seen ways (as though coming face to face with a regular dinosaur wasn't already intimidating enough). Its lengthy two-hour and 14-minute runtime gave further opportunities to raise the stakes, allowing for more varied and thrilling encounters no longer confined to a mere park, but an entire island this time around.
It's these new additions that further enhance this latest outing's appeal, as the film packs enough surprising new prehistoric faces to keep even the most die-hard Jurassic fan on their toes, a testament to how far the franchise has come, and the ever-lasting wonder of witnessing dinosaurs coming to life once again. Like its namesake, Jurassic World Rebirth isn't just a revival of the long-running franchise, it's a rekindling of mankind's fascination with what has long been extinct, and as the films have so aptly described in the past, we didn't ask for reality, we asked for more teeth.

New TV Anime 'Junji Ito Crimson' Will Drop On Crunchyroll

Junji Ito's terrifically horrific manga will have its newest TV anime adaptation, titled Junji Ito Crimson , released on Crunchyroll. Announced during Japan Expo 2025, the upcoming anime will also feature Yumi Matsutoya, the renowned Japanese singer-songwriter, performing the opening theme 'Karasuageha'. Other than that, there has not been any further information released to the public. It is currently uncertain what the format of the upcoming anime will be, nor has it been confirmed which staff or production studios will be involved. However, an announcement trailer has been released to give fans a sneak peek of the upcoming project. There have been quite a few anime adaptations of Ito's manga, including Junji Ito Collection (2018), Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre (2023) and Uzumaki (2024). Although Ito's legendary horror manga has broken into pop culture thanks to his unique art style and concepts, unfortunately, his works have not had much luck in anime adaptations. Some adaptations even faced poor reception upon launch for various reasons. Uzumaki (2024) Nevertheless, the work of each preceding adaptation's creative teams has given fans new takes on Ito's works, each worthy of a watch because there are always fresh perspectives to glean from each of these adaptations. With the upcoming Junji Ito Crimson focusing more on Ito's monstrous creations, coupled with the crimson motif, there is no doubt that this will be an exciting prospect for fans and casual viewers alike. The Return Of Superman & John Williams, With New Heroes And DC Trinity In James Gunn's Reboot Kickoff

This interview has been edited for clarity. After three hit movies writing and directing a story about a human living among and interacting with aliens, doing the same about an alien living on Earth should be a piece of cake, or so one might think. But when that alien also happens to be Superman aka Kal-El aka the Last Son of Krypton and one of the most well-known character who has appeared in comic books, novels, radio, television shows, multiple live-action movies and more, identifying that right tone of voice for a global audience already familiar with the character can be daunting. And it's more so for James Gunn ( The Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy), co-CEO of DC Studios, and writer and director of the upcoming Superman film, starring David Corenswet as the Man of Steel, and Rachel Brosnahan as journalist Lois Lane, and longtime partner and love interest. Speaking with Geek Culture during the Manila stopover of DC Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures' Superman Global Talent Tour, Gunn offered a glimpse into his vision for Superman, revealing the delicate art of reinventing iconic characters while respecting their legacy. 'The biggest challenge was getting Clark's voice right,' he explains, on delivering an updated version of an 87-year-old character that the majority of the world readily recognise. 'He's this gung-ho guy, and I wanted to ensure I was true to who he really is.' Interestingly enough though, writing for Lois Lane came more naturally to Gunn, who found that crafting a voice for a strong journalist rather effortless. But with this also comes the natural conflict – how do you write about an iconic relationship that the world is already intimately familiar with, especially with an expectant fanbase? 'I wrote something I hoped was true to who Superman was. It's not about changing anything fundamental, but adding some depth to certain aspects of their relationship,' he emphasizes. 'We're micro-focusing on one aspect of their relationship, which is the first three months of when they're dating, which is something we don't really see,' Gunn revealed. 'It's when they've gone past the initial sort of attraction, and now they're in, 'Oh boy. Is this really something that I can see work?'' Not so ironically, it's also this bigger tapestry that his Superman film is establishing for a new DC Studios film universe that has fans also asking, sometimes in a not so supportive manner, is this something that can work? With strong level of expectations around what Gunn is trying to create as co-CEO of the new DC Studios, the 58-year-old is doing something that no other director of previous Superman debut films have done – introduce an accompanying cast of live-action superheroes from the DC Comics pantheon to establish a broader, more interconnected DC Universe Hollywood franchise. Beyond Superman, Gunn is orchestrating an ambitious universe with the introduction of Green Lantern Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion, The Suicide Squad ), Hawkgirl aka Kendra Saunders (Isabela Merced, Alien: Romulus ), Metamorpho aka Rex Mason (Anthony Carrigan, Death of a Unicorn ) and Mister Terriffic aka Michael Holt (Edi Gathegi, X-Men: First Class ) in Superman . And beyond that, production has already started for a Supergirl movie, directed by Craig Gillespie ( Cruella ) and starring Milly Alcock ( House of the Dragon ) as the Maid of Might, Clayface directed by James Watkins ( Speak No Evil ) and starring Tom Rhys Harries ( Kandahar ) as the actor turned Batman villain, as well as for the Green Lanterns television series, Lanterns , about intergalactic emerald ring bearers Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler, Godzilla vs. Kong ) and John Stewart (Aaron Pierre, Rebel Ridge ). And in this complex world of superhero storytelling, Gunn can't do it all alone and everything starts with assembling a team of writers who don't just come up with ideas, but also turn in scripts to his satisfaction. 'It always comes back to the scripts,' he candidly shares. 'That's what I care about most.' Gunn's approach isn't just theoretical as he's seen firsthand how a brilliant script can elevate a project. 'When the Lanterns pilot was written, it was amazing,' he recalls of Chris Mundy ( Ozark ), DC Comics writer Tom King, and Damon Lindelof's ( Lost ) effort. Similarly, Ana Nogueira's debut Supergirl script and Mike Flanagan's ( The Haunting of Hill House ) Clayface screenplay were impressive enough to greenlight production. Still, not everything that comes across Gunn's table is suitable, nor does it always meet his high standards. 'Some things that came in weren't so amazing,' Gunn admits and while he didn't name any projects, there have been reports that the long talked about Sgt. Rock film has been put on hold. And when a script falls short, his team doesn't hesitate to pump the brakes. 'We either slow them down or shift our approach,' he explains. 'If you have a good script, you can find great directors.' And while his Superman film is a reboot of previous live-action cinematic efforts, the movie does retain one element from Richard Donner's seminal 1978 classic of the same name, starring Christopher Reeve as Superman – the use of John Williams' iconic theme song. In fact, Gunn and team ran the use of the legendary composer's music in the film with the 93-year-old, to ensure that they receive his stamp of approval. 'John had to watch the way the music was used in the movie, because it's his music. He owns it,' Gunn clarifies. 'We showed him everything so that he could see it and make sure it was okay to use it. He was very gracious about it.' And while Superman is taking flight, questions are also abuzz about the remaining two of DC's Trinity of heroes – Batman and Wonder Woman – and their lack of any visibility at this time. While not revealing more details, Gunn insists that the trio remain central to his DC Universe, though they are also not the only characters he has been tasked to bring to the fore. 'They're incredibly central. When (co-CEO) Peter Saffron and I took over DC Studios, we had our own marching orders, were that we were going to continue to honour the legacy of the big three, what we call diamond properties, and Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman.' He continues, 'And then other characters, like Green Lantern, who's very big but hasn't had as much of a chance, but then also to bring in other characters that were newer characters like Peacemaker, Clayface or Metamorpho, and bring them into the mix and turn them into diamond characters, so that future generations can enjoy all of these characters.' Detective Conan's 28th Anime Film, 'One-Eyed Flashback', To Open In Singapore Sep 2025

Following a successful box office showing in Japan, Detective Conan: One-Eyed Flashback ( Metitantei Conan: Sekigan no Flashback ) has been set for a Singapore release. The 28th anime film in the series opens in local theatres this September, with local distributor Odex apologising for the delay in a Facebook announcement post, promising that 'it'll be worth the wait'. That's the picture painted by its opening numbers, at least. The feature clinched the top spot after debuting on 18 April in its home country, earning 3,438,626,700 yen (US$24.15 million / S$30.4 million) in its first three days. It also sold 2,314,690 tickets within the same period, setting a new opening-weekend record for the franchise. Katsuya Shigehara (unit director of 2023's Detective Conan: Black Iron Submarine ) directed a script written by Takeharu Sakurai (various Detective Conan movies), while King Gun performed the theme song, 'Twilight!!!'. Taking place in the snowy mountains of Nagano, the latest entry brings back several familiar faces from the previous films, including Kogoro, whose last major role was in 2005's Strategy Above the Depths . The translated synopsis of Detective Conan: One-Eyed Flashback reads (per its official website): 'Mt. Miho in the Yatsugatake mountain range, Nagano Prefecture. While pursuing a 'certain man' in the snowy mountains, Kansuke Yamato, a Nagano Prefectural Police officer, unexpectedly saw a shadow of someone in his field of vision. When he was caught off guard, a rifle bullet fired by 'a man' grazed his left eye, causing an avalanche with a loud earth tremor. The avalanche swallowed him up… Ten months later. After receiving a report that a researcher at the Nobeyama observatory of the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan had been attacked by an unknown assailant, Kansuke, who miraculously survived the avalanche, and Yui Uehara rushed to the scene. During the interview, the giant parabolic antenna of the observatory is set in motion, and suddenly the left eye of the injured and one-eyed Kansuke begins to tingle violently… That night, the Mori Detective Agency received a call from a detective called 'Wani,' a close colleague of Kogoro's from his days at the Metropolitan Police Department. He said that he was investigating an avalanche that Kansuke was involved in, and that he found Kogoro's name in the case file. Kogoro promised to meet Wani at a later date, and Conan followed him, but as they were on their way to the meeting place, a gunshot suddenly rang out. ' The sleuthing action will take to the big screen in Singapore come September. Si Jia is a casual geek at heart – or as casual as someone with Sephiroth's theme on her Spotify playlist can get.
