After 12 years' hiatus, Super GT racing series returns to Malaysia – its only overseas stop
KUALA LUMPUR, June 18 — After a 12-year hiatus, the Super GT racing series is returning to Malaysia – the only overseas stop in Japan's premier grand touring (GT) championship this year.
Malaysia will host the third round of the 2025 Super GT series, from June 26 to June 28 at the Petronas Sepang International Circuit.
Toyota Gazoo Racing Malaysia is the title sponsor for the Malaysian round.
The other seven races in the 2025 race calendar will take place at premier circuits across Japan.
Malaysia last hosted the Super GT in 2013 which coincided with the 20th anniversary of the racing series.
The Super GT was slated for a comeback in July 2020, as Malaysia was eyeing to host the world's first-ever GT night race. However, the Covid-19 pandemic pulled the brakes on the plan.
Making up for the letdown, the Super GT Malaysia Festival 2025 is revving up the fanfare, promising a treat for both automotive fans and Japanese culture enthusiasts.
As the Super GT is a major event leading up to Visit Malaysia 2026, it has also been endorsed by Tourism Malaysia, Visit Selangor 2025 and the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

So, what's lined up for you?
Two separate races — the GR86 Cup race and TGR Vios race – will be running concurrently with the Super GT during the three-day event.
Special promotions of automotive products from renowned brands such as Toyota, Honda and Nissan also await car enthusiasts at automotive showcases there.
Additionally, more than 50 cars from the Japanese Domestic Market will also be on display.
Super GT official merchandise will also be on sale during the event.
Cars, however, will not be the only ones stealing the spotlight. The Super GT is also hosting a Japanese cultural festival or Nihon Matsuri for fans to experience the time-tested traditions of the Land of the Rising Sun.
The Nihon Matsuri will feature some 40 vendors rolling out an array of traditional Japanese delicacies, games and performances.

The organisers will be scouting for three top cosplayers daily to give away cash prizes worth RM500 each.
Topping it off, the KLP48 international girl group — sister group to the popular Japanese mega girl-group AKB48 — will be performing at the GT Live! Concert on the final night (June 28).
The GT Live! Concert will also feature several household names, including Kaka Azraff, the Garam Madu fame Naykilla and Jemsii, Fareedpf, Sabhi Saddi, Sara Fajira as well as Kaz and Sora.
Prices of the Super GT tickets range from RM100 (K1 Grandstand) to RM15,000 (Dream Package per two passes).
Except for those in the K1 Grandstand category, ticket-holders from all categories can also participate in a lucky draw by purchasing their tickets with a Mastercard.

BACHOK, June 28 — The Public Works Ministry (KKR) has revealed that rainy weather and overloaded heavy vehicles were the two main causes behind damaged roads in the country. Its deputy minister, Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan said RM4 billion was required to repair the damaged roads in the country, but the ministry has only received nearly RM2 billion due to limitations faced by the government. Structural reset needed to end crashes plaguing bus industry, says expert

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Malaysia's bus industry is in urgent need of structural reform to curb the number of fatal crashes plaguing the sector, according to transport consultant Wan Agyl Wan Hassan. Earlier this week, Utusan Malaysia reported that more than 203 bus-related accidents were recorded in the country between January 2023 and May this year, resulting in 39 deaths, 68 serious injuries, and 197 minor injuries. Wan Agyl, founder of transport think tank My Mobility Vision, said those statistics showed the country's road safety record was a 'national failure'. 'It demands more than a short-term fix,' he added. Wan Agyl Wan Hassan. He said the accidents, though varied in their specific causes, were ultimately the result of a transport system under severe stress from cost and manpower pressures, as well as regulatory blind spots. 'On one hand, there's growing demand; more people travelling, more school trips, more factory charters. 'On the other hand, there's a severe shortage of trained and full-time drivers, and margins so thin that operators are forced to take risks just to keep their businesses alive,' he told FMT. Police have attributed the crashes to speeding, poor vehicle maintenance, mechanical failures, and pressure exerted on drivers by bus operators. Yusri said driver error was the main factor behind these accidents, adding that many of them were fatigued from driving for too long without rest, while others had little experience operating buses or were under the influence of alcohol and drugs. Wan Agyl called for a nationwide employment framework for drivers that ensured fair pay, regulated hours and career stability. He said bus drivers are typically hired on 'loose' contracts rather than given permanent employment—unlike countries like Japan where commercial bus drivers are medically screened, trained and employed under a national system. 'In Singapore, the Land Transport Authority contracts bus services based on performance, not just price, ensuring safety standards are part of the business model. 'Even in Dubai, companies like Dubai Taxi Corporation run structured driver employment systems with safety and service built into their operations. Malaysia can do this, but we haven't,' he said. Wan Agyl said a structural reset would involve digitising compliance so that all commercial buses have real-time GPS devices that record speed and distance. To qualify for operating permits, bus companies should also be required to maintain detailed maintenance logs, he added. 'It means auditing and grading bus operators based on safety performance and disqualifying low-grade firms from winning government or tourism contracts. 'And it means finally enacting laws that hold company directors and operators liable — not just the man at the wheel—when systemic negligence leads to harm,' he said. Wan Agyl called for the formation of a national bus safety task force under the transport ministry, with representation from the road transport department, Land Public Transport Agency, Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research, and industry players. 'There is no reason for transport safety to be fragmented when lives are at stake,' he said.

Tay-Liew pair secure victory in WCGC Malaysia second qualifier
KUALA LUMPUR: Tay Cher Haw and Liew Vin Sern delivered a standout performance to clinch the second qualifying round of the World Corporate Golf Challenge (WCGC) Malaysia, held yesterday at Tropicana Golf & Country Club, Petaling Jaya. Representing Seng Haw Timber Sdn Bhd, Cher Haw (handicap 9) and Vin Sern (18) amassed an impressive 49 points in the Two Ball Best Ball Stableford format to outplay 124 participants and secure the title at the Enotech-sponsored event. Their victory also earned them a spot in the WCGC Malaysia National Final, scheduled for 25 September at Kota Permai Golf & Country Club, alongside the top four. Fourth place went to Muhammad Feyyaz (9) and Amirul Adli Senu (5) of Feyyaz Sports Group, also with 45 points on OCB, while Muhammad Firdaus Said (5) and Mohd Azwan (17) of Sinar Jernih Sdn Bhd secured fifth spot under the same condition. In the first qualifier held last month at Seri Selangor Golf Club, five teams had already booked their tickets to the national final.
